Book From Education to Working Life

Download or read book From Education to Working Life written by European Union. European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While considerable empirical evidence exists concerning the effectiveness of education in general, there has been less emphasis on understanding, from a comparative European perspective, the effect of the type of education on labour market outcomes for young people. Using data from the EU labour force survey 2009 ad hoc module, this report focuses on the labour market outcomes of VET. Comparing levels and orientations of education, it considers employment, occupation or sector differences, the education-to-work transition process, job quality and the effect on wages. The report underlines that initially VET results in positive labour market outcomes, which should be placed in a longer-term context, given the effect that structural changes in European Union labour markets will have on the demand for occupations in different sectors -- EU Bookshop.

However, there is much debate about the consequences of this phenomena and the short and long term effects for both the overeducated worker and the economy as a whole. Book Labour Market Outcomes of Vocational Education in Europe

Download or read book Labour Market Outcomes of Vocational Education in Europe written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focuses on the outcomes of vocational education and, in particular, on the transition from education to work in the current employment situation for young adults in the European Union. Using anonymised microdata from the EU labour force survey 2009 ad hoc module, this is one of the first studies to undertake a large crosscountry comparison of the labour market outcomes of different education orientations and levels. The report underlines that vocational education graduates experience initially positive labourmarket outcomes relative to graduates of medium-level general education. Vocational graduates enjoy a faster transition to work, are more likely to have a permanent first job, and are less likely to find a first job with a qualification mismatch. Additional country level analysis is complemented by an investigation of national institutional features as a possible explanation for cross-country differences in VET labour market outcomes.

Book Full Employment in Europe

Download or read book Full Employment in Europe written by Günther Schmid and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is without doubt a must-read reflection on the notion of full employment and a source of inspiration for the establishing of the knowledge-based economy that is such an aspiration for Europeans. Thomas Bauwens, Agence Europe Every book by Günther Schmid is an event. This one illuminates the current European policy debate on flexicurity . It gives fresh analyses of the comparative employment performances of the EU and the USA, and proposes a path-breaking framework for understanding and improving them. Pragmatic and provocative, Schmid s contribution should be a must for researchers, but also for HR managers, social partners representatives and policymakers interested in the present and future of work and employment. Bernard Gazier, University Paris 1 and a Member of the Institut Universitaire de France Transitional Labour Markets (TLM) defined as legitimate, negotiated and politically supported sets of various employment options in critical events over the life course are an essential ingredient of modern full employment strategies. After assessing the European Employment Strategy, this book offers a detailed comparative analysis of employment performance for selected European member states and the United States. It suggests that successful employment systems arise from a new paradigm of flexibility and security ( flexicurity ) the balance of which varies according to countries institutional paths. Whilst there is no best practice , TLM theory does provide normative and analytical principles that can be generalised for various institutional settings. The book also provides good practice examples for managing critical transitions over the life course from education to employment, from one job to another, from unemployment to employment, from private activities to gainful work and from employment to retirement and develops the contours for extending unemployment insurance to work life insurance. With a fresh and new approach to the question of full employment in modern society, this book will appeal to academic scholars interested in labour market and employment policies, and policy decision makers at local, regional, national and European levels.

Book Making the Transition

Download or read book Making the Transition written by Irena Kogan and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-11 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the breakdown of socialism in Central and Eastern Europe, the role of education systems in preparing students for the "real world" changed. Though young people were freed from coercive state institutions, the shift to capitalism made the transition from school to work much more precarious and increased inequality in early career outcomes. This volume provides the first large-scale analysis of the impact social transformation has had on young people in their transition from school to work in Central and Eastern European countries. Written by local experts, the book examines the process for those entering the workforce under socialism, during the turbulent transformation years, in the early 2000s, and today. It considers both the risks and opportunities that have emerged, and reveals how they are distributed across social groups. Only by studying these changes can we better understand the long-term impact of socialism and post-socialist transformation on the problems young people in this part of the world are facing today.

Finally, evidence is given on the impact of education on individual earnings prospects.

Book European Youth Labour Markets

Download or read book European Youth Labour Markets written by Miguel Ángel Malo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely analysis examines the complex state of youth unemployment across Europe and offers cogent policy suggestions for addressing this longstanding societal problem. The findings reveal numerous national and regional factors affecting youth joblessness—not only market and economic challenges, but also deep sociocultural and political dynamics underlying the situations. Coverage details how the standard transition from school to work is disrupted in an already depressed adult job market, and compares a wide range of responses in terms of both young people’s educational decision-making and national youth policy. In particular, contributors assess whether the current crop of Youth Guarantee programs can/should be a model for employment policy across the continent. Among the topics covered: Youth labour market prospects and recent policy developments. Youth labour market in Central and Eastern Europe. Early school dropout in Spain: evolution during the Great Recession. Overeducation among European university graduates: a constraint or a choice? Promoting youth employment in Europe: evidence-based policy lessons. The evaluation of a Finnish youth guarantee: lessons for Europe? European Youth Labour Markets is of interest to an international audience of economists, sociologists, and leaders in governmental, non-profit, and corporate sectors through its broad and comparative macroeconomic focus and implications for policymaking, research, resource allocation, and policy evaluation.
