Book Education Through the Agency of Religious Organizations Classic Reprint

Download or read book Education Through the Agency of Religious Organizations Classic Reprint written by William H. Larrabee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education Through the Agency of Religious Organizations The Protestant Episcopal church in the United States was organized in 1785 as a logical result Of the separation of the colonies from the mother country. Avowing its indebtedness to the Church Of England, it embodied a formal declaration in the preface to its Prayer Book Of an intention not to depart from the faith of that church in any essential point Of discipline or worship, or further than local circumstances required. The first Protestant Episcopal theological seminary was Opened in 1820, after the subject had been discussed for six years, and was constituted in 1821 the General Theological seminary of the church, to be under its control, with the distinct understanding that the action was to be no hin drance to any state or diocese establishing a seminary Of its own. The privilege has been freely exercised by the dioceses, and there are now sixteen theological seminaries in different parts of the church. Twelve collegiate and 1 16 academical institutions, under diocesan or local control, were reported to the general convention in 1901. The report Of the United States commissioner Of education for 1900 - 01 gives the Episcopalians 664 teachers and students in 88 secondary Schools. Among the earlier colleges established after the forma tion Of the general convention were Trinity college, Hart ford, Conn. Hobart college, Geneva, N. Y. And Kenyon college, Gambier, Ohio The last, and the theological seminary at the Same place, were pioneer institutions in the extension of the church westward. The University of the South at Sewanee, Tenn., is the fruit of a plan that was formed by Bishop Otey, the first bishop Of Tennessee, to establish a large institution under the control of the Episcopal church, in which religion should go hand in hand with every lesson of a secular character, and young men be prepared for the ministry. The scheme was revived by Bishop Polk in 1856, and the co-operation of the bishops of nine southern dioceses was secured to carry it out. The institution was broken up almost at its beginningby the Civil war; but its operations were renewed in 1868. It includes eleven departments or schools. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relations of Christian Denominations to Colleges: An Address Before the Conference on Education of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, at Atlanta, Ga;, May 20, 1908 In beginning a paper which concerns the relations of religious organizations to institutions of higher learning, I may perhaps be allowed a word in regard to the work and sco-pe of the Came gie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. This new institution, but recently endowed by Mr. Andrew Carnegie with fifteen millions of dollars, is not a charitable institution, but an educational agency. It deals with colleges, universities, and technical schools in the United States, Canada, and Newfound land, and is the only institution at the present moment which is directly concerned with the educational interests of the whole of English-speaking North America. The purpose of the Foundation is the service of higher educa tion by strengthening and dignifying the calling of the teacher. It does this, directly, by the establishment of a retiring allowance system in such colleges and universities as may become eligible to its benefits. The professor in such an institution receives his re tired pay through his college just as he receives his salary, in accordance with definite rules, as a right, not as a favor. In case of his death, his widow receives as a pension the half of the retiring salary to which her husband was entitled. Book Reformatory Education

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reformatory Education: Papers on Preventive, Correctional and Reformatory Institutions and Agencies in Different Countries God, the legislator of the Jews, incorporated into the politico-religious code which was the corpus juris of their theocracy, injunctions of charity as extensive as their moral and intellectual development would endure, yet operative exclusively amongst their own nation, and as compared with the corresponding Christian idea, very narrow and low. The half century jubilee remitted all debts, and gave each family its old inherit ance anew. The septennial or Sabbatical year gave to all alike the spontaneous fruit of the earth. The Sabbath was a rest for all, men and animals. Wheat and grapes were to be left for the poor gleaners. No interest was to be taken from a Jew; and no pledge retained after sun down. The poor were always to be remembered and helped. A trien nial tithe was exacted, for strangers, widows, and orphans. The first fruits were to be bestowed in charity. Except this compulsory practice, scarcely a trace of even the form of charity is visible amongst the ante-christian nations. Much more ex pressive of the general heathen hard-heartedness, is the prevalence of legalized child-murder or exposure, slaughter of the old to be rid of them, and such other institutional abominations. The distribution of food or money, by the great rich men of Rome to clients, or on public occasions, to the citizens generally, were to buy votes or influence, or to maintain a pompous retinue. As for the long established custom of daily largesses of food or money to the common people of Rome, established to gain their votes or support, it was continued simply from pure necessity, because these turbulent and powerful beneficiaries, (said to haver numbered not lem than two million sf) would have ended the authority and life together. Book By Products of the Rural Sunday School Classic Reprint

Download or read book By Products of the Rural Sunday School Classic Reprint written by J. M. Somerndike and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from By-Products of the Rural Sunday School Increasing attention is being given to the Sunday school. This is due to the recognition that it has become the most important agency in the religious instruction of our youth. We do not refer to the Sunday school apart from the Church, but to the Church working through the Sunday school. We are beginning to realize that In America both the Church and the nation must depend largely upon the Sunday school for the Christian instruction of our boys and girls, as well as for the Bible study of our adults. Earnest efforts are being made to render our Sunday schools more efficient, so that better and more abundant results may be obtained from the work done in them. Consideration, however, has thus far been given for the most part to the larger schools in our towns and cities. It is well for us, therefore, to have our attention directed to the smaller rural schools. The majority of our Sunday schools are of this character. In many cases these schools are taking the place of churches in scattered communities. A church could not be supported, but a Sunday school can be carried on by the people themselves, and may become the center of the religious life of the neighborhood. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Week Day Church School: A Historical Sketch, Brief Analysis, and Attempted Evaluation of the Organized Efforts to Furnish Week Day Religious Instruction to Pupils of Elementary and High School Age in the United States This book is prepared in the hope that it may help to meet the rapidly growing demand for information concerning week-day religious instruction. It was im possible to' give adequate information in the author's pam phlet on the Gary Church School Plan. Even the enlarged second edition Of that leaflet, because of the limitations as to space, had to leave some important matters untouched. A fuller treatment of these subjects has been possible in the present volume. More' than thirty different communities have under taken the organization of classes for week-day religious instruction during the past five months. A still larger number Of communities are planning to begin this type of work before the end of the present school year. If the movement continues to grow in the geometrical ratio which has characterized its growth for the past two or three years, it will soon assume proportions overshadowing every other educational agency of the Church. Book Colleges Religious Institutions

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colleges Religious Institutions: A Discourse Delivered in the Park Presbyterian Church, Newark, Oct, 29, 1851 Before the Society for the Promotion of Collegiate and Theological Education at the West We deceive ourselves then, when we imagine the first of a series of events, all tending to a com mon result, to be greater and better than all the rest, simply because it is the first. There is, in fact, a common honor due to agencies that cooperate for the same end. That is the greatest, whether it be the first or the last, which is the most efficacious; and the end is greater than all. The first may be the least of all the events in the series. SO our Sa viour represents the beginning of true piety in the soul of man, when he says, The kingdom of God is like a grain of mustard-seed, which when it is sown in the earth, is less than all seeds that be in the earth but it becometh greater than all herbs. Other influences are added, a thousand-fold greater than the first, and that which was begun in weak ness and Obscurity, terminates in power and glory. Book An Outline of a Bible School Curriculum Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Outline of a Bible School Curriculum Classic Reprint written by George William Pease and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of a Bible-School Curriculum That the Bible school has been an important factor in the moral and religious training of our children and young people is a fact freely admitted by the more discerning students of our national life. In spite of its neglect by professional educators, a neglect which is not easily accounted for, and the peculiarly difficult conditions under which it has had to do its work, much has been done for the formation of Christian character in the thousands who have come under its influence. That the work of the Bible school, judged from a teaching standpoint, has not been of a high character must be admitted even by its most ardent supporters; but that it has been one of the great moral influences in our land all must concede. Within the last few years there has been a deepening interest in the Bible school, and in other institutions and agencies for moral and religious training, which has finally resulted in the formation of the Religious Education Association, whose object is "to promote religious and moral education." From this association much is hoped for, and the time seems not far distant when the problems connected with moral and religious education shall be clearly defined, and many of them satisfactorily solved.
