Book Revitalising Nigeria Economy Through Science and Technology Education in the 21st Century

Download or read book Revitalising Nigeria Economy Through Science and Technology Education in the 21st Century written by Emmanuel Edoja Achor and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nobody is in doubt as to whether there is need to make the current quality of education being offered at secondary and tertiary levels in science and technology education in Nigeria more relevant, more entrepreneurial in nature and therefore more self sustaining. Desiring to achieve this in the near future, this paper examines how to possibly revitalize Nigeria economy through science and technology education in the 21st century with particular emphasis on the implications it holds for skills acquisition. Possibilities/opportunities of making the science and technology education subjects entrepreneurial in nature were examined and it was concluded that with renewed emphasis on skills acquisition there is hope of revitalizing Nigeria economy through science and technology education. With adequate weighting given to practical and workshop/studio practices, more time allotted to practical/workshop practices, those who offer science subjects allowed to go on Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) and promotion of science and technology education teachers tied to progress of learners in external examination in practical/workshop practices, the nation's economy could be revitalized as individual economy is being revitalized also. The paper however cautions that unless something drastic happens concerning poor knowledge of the subject matter and examination malpractice, every efforts made in this regard may be fruitless.

Book Hot Issues in Contemporary Nigerian Science and Technology Policy

Download or read book Hot Issues in Contemporary Nigerian Science and Technology Policy written by Alexander O. E. Animalu and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a public lecture to commemorate the 16th Anniversary of the "Scientific Revival Day for Africa", organized by the African Technology Policy Studies (ATPS) Network. A recapitulation of the evolution of Nigeria's Science and Technology (S & T) Policy is presented, in order to highlight certain hot issues arising from where we are coming, where we are, and where we should be going. These hot issues are linked with the priorities arising from the August/September 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) at Johannesburg, South Africa vis-à-vis Nigeria's expected leadership role in the implementation of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD). Beyond precepts, a specific example is given of a strategic partnership initiative whose time has come, namely, a new (submerged arc) technology (for sewage recycling) and an eliminator technology (for conversion of the sewage waste into a novel non-polluting fuel called Santilli magnegas) which could make considerable impact on a myriad of African problems in the areas of ecology, environment, health, portable [i.e. potable] water and energy."--Page v.

Book Educational Research and Innovation Educating 21st Century Children Emotional Well Being in the Digital Age

Download or read book Educational Research and Innovation Educating 21st Century Children Emotional Well Being in the Digital Age written by Oecd and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-22 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the nature of childhood today? On a number of measures, modern children's lives have clearly improved thanks to better public safety and support for their physical and mental health. New technologies help children to learn, socialise and unwind, and older, better-educated parents are increasingly playing an active role in their children's education. At the same time, we are more connected than ever before, and many children have access to tablets and smartphones before they learn to walk and talk. Twenty-first century children are more likely to be only children, increasingly pushed to do more by "helicopter parents" who hover over their children to protect them from potential harm. In addition to limitless online opportunities, the omnipresent nature of the digital world brings new risks, like cyber-bullying, that follow children from the schoolyard into their homes. This report examines modern childhood, looking specifically at the intersection between emotional well-being and new technologies. It explores how parenting and friendships have changed in the digital age. It examines children as digital citizens, and how best to take advantage of online opportunities while minimising the risks. The volume ends with a look at how to foster digital literacy and resilience, highlighting the role of partnerships, policy and protection.

Book Science and Mathematics Education for 21st Century Citizens

Download or read book Science and Mathematics Education for 21st Century Citizens written by Laurinda Leite and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2020 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book addresses the challenges that face science and mathematics education if it is to be relevant to 21st century citizens, as well as the ways that outstanding specialists from several countries around the world think it should deal with those challenges. Starting with the issue of science and mathematics teacher education in a changing world, it moves on to deal with innovative approaches to teaching science and mathematics. It then discusses contemporary issues related to the role played by technology in science and mathematics education, the challenges of the STEM agenda, and ways of making science and mathematics education more inclusive. Finally, it focuses on assessment issues, as the success of science and mathematics education depends at least in part on the purposes for which, and ways in which, students' learning is assessed. There is a worldwide trend towards providing meaningful science and mathematics education to all children for the sake of literacy and numeracy development and a need to produce enough science and technology specialists. This trend and need, coupled with the concern raised by students' disengagement in these two knowledge areas and the role that technology may play in countering it, put increasingly high demands on teachers. As shown in this book, science and mathematics education may offer a unique contribution in developing responsible citizens by fostering skills required in order to assume wider responsibilities and roles, focusing on personal, social and environmental dimensions. For instance, it offers unique insights into how teachers can build on students' complicated and interconnected real-worlds to help them learn authentic and relevant science and mathematics. Additionally, the book highlights potential positive relationships between science and mathematics, which are often envisaged as having a conflicting relationship in school curricula. By uncovering the similarities between them, and by providing evidence that both areas deal with issues that are relevant for citizens' daily lives, the book explores ways of linking and giving coherence to science and mathematics knowledge as components of everyday life settings. It also provides directions for future research on the educational potential of interconnecting science and mathematics at the different educational levels. Therefore, this is a worthwhile book for researchers, teacher educators and schoolteachers. It covers theoretical perspectives, research-based approaches and practical applications that may make a difference in education that is relevant and inclusive for citizens in the 21st century"--
