Book History of Education in Nigeria

Download or read book History of Education in Nigeria written by A. Babs Fafunwa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1974, a comprehensive history of Nigerian Education, from early times right through to the time of publication, had long been needed by all concerned with Education in Nigeria, students, teachers and educational administrators. No one was better qualified than Professor Fafunwa to provide such a book, and in doing so he gave due emphasis to the beginnings of Education in its three main stages of indigenous, Muslim and Christian Education. Nigerian Education had been considered all too often as a comparatively recent phenomenon, but this book points out from the start that ‘Education is as old as Man himself in Africa’ and that both Islam and Christianity were comparative newcomers in the field. A historical treatment of these three strands which have combined to make up the modern Educational system was vital to a clear understanding of what was needed for the future, and most of the first half of the book is concerned with these Educational beginnings. The imposing of a foreign colonial system on this framework did not always lead to a happy fusion of the systems, and the successes and the failures are examined in detail. There was no shortage of documentary evidence in the form of reports and statistics during the decades prior to publication, but this evidence was frequently scattered and inaccessible to the student, so that the author’s careful selection of key evidence and reports, often drawn from his own personal experience, will be invaluable for those wishing to trace the development of Education in Nigeria up to the early 1970s. A knowledge of the history and development of the Nigerian Education system, of the numerous and intensely varied personalities and beliefs which have combined and often conflicted to shape it, is indispensable to all students in colleges and universities studying to become teachers. It is this knowledge that Professor Fafunwa set out to provide, drawing on his wide experience as teacher writer and educationalist.

Book excerpt: This book is an educational piece and a thoroughly researched contribution in the 21st century Nigeria. I recommend it to all lovers of education. The Education Ministers, Boards and other relevant bodies have to read this. University Dons would find Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Alphonsus Ezeokes book exceptionally useful. It is a handbook for todays students. -Very Rev. Msgr. Prof. J.P.C. Nzomiwu (Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria) Straddling two cultures, Fr. Ezeoke not only exposes the urgent need for educational reform in Nigeria, but he also advances the strategies that are needed to reach under the current system and lift it up. Knowing the historicity, Fr. Ezeokes careful assessment calls for action and boldly determines that such an undertaking is key to Nigerian growth, unity and global interaction. -Cathy B. Grandjean, MA BCC (Fmr) Director of Chaplaincy, Catholic Health Services of Long Island I write to congratulate Rev. Dr. Alphonsus Ezeoke for this unique 21st Century contribution to the field of education. While he promoted positive and optimistic concern to educational growth in general, he equally got to the root of the dilemma, illusions, presumptions, ideologies and projections that impact negatively on its attainment. I highly recommend this masterpiece to the educational system in Nigeria, especially to everyone who is conscious to make his/her educational journey a success story. -Anthony O. Nwachukwu, PhD, Psy.D (Prof. of Counseling Psychology and West African Studies) Chair, PhD Defense Panel, NY

Book Reimagining Nigeria s Educational System

Download or read book Reimagining Nigeria s Educational System written by Joseph A. Balogun and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-20 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the challenges within the Nigerian educational system and provides a concrete plan to revitalize the low-performing system by strengthening high-stakes testing at all levels. In Nigeria, many citizens believe that the solution to the country’s low performance in education is to eliminate high-stakes standardized testing. High-stakes testing refers to applying standardized student achievement tests as a primary mechanism to evaluate students, teachers, and their school’s performance. This book argues that the poor quality of education and low ranking of Nigeria’s educational system is not related to the negative consequences of high-stakes testing, but rather is due to many intrinsic factors. By conducting a comparative analysis of six high-performing education systems worldwide, the book offers a comparative summative evaluation of the educational system and offers recommendations. This book will be of interest to policymakers and scholars in the fields of African education, higher education, quality and global studies, African studies, management and administration, leadership, and professional development studies. Joseph Abiodun Balogun is former Dean and retired Distinguished University Professor at the College of Health Sciences, Chicago State University, USA, Visiting Professor/Program Consultant at the Centre of Excellence in Reproductive Health Innovation, University of Benin, Nigeria, and President/ CEO, Joseph Rehabilitation Center, Tinley Park, Illinois, USA.

Book Repositioning Higher Education in Nigeria

Download or read book Repositioning Higher Education in Nigeria written by Babalola Borishade and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published for the National Universities Commission in Nigeria, this book is the outcome of a National Summit on Higher Education, which took place in Nigeria in 2002. The summit was convened by the Ministry of Education with the support of Unesco. Its purpose was to thrash out the issues pertaining to the improvement and repositioning of the higher education system in Nigeria, so that is may better respond to the country?s needs. The resultant work is a multi-contributory publication covering the breadth and depth of the problems implicated in the higher education system. The papers address for example: the purpose of higher education in a developing country context; the state of universities in Nigeria; management and funding of higher education; the relevance and delivery of curricula; disciplinary, social and religious concerns; and the role of ICTs and new initiatives such as distance learning and virtual library projects. The contributors propose recommendations for improvement, including: the necessity of high- level government interest in education reforms; the importance of university autonomy and academic freedom; the need for both the public and private sectors to support higher education; the need for substantial hikes in government funding for higher education; the participation of stakeholders in policymaking for higher education; and the precondition of good government and democracy for the success of the sector.
