Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world’s collective archaeological heritage is threatened by war, development, poverty, climate change, and ignorance. To protect our collective past, archaeologists must involve the general public through interpersonal experiences that develop an interest in the field at a young age and foster that interest throughout a person’s life. Contributors to this volume share effective approaches for engaging and educating learners of all ages about archaeology and how one can encourage them to become stewards of the past. They offer applied examples that are not bound to specific geographies or cultures, but rather, are approaches that can be implemented almost anywhere.

Book 21st Century Stewardship

Download or read book 21st Century Stewardship written by Marissa Page and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In light of the increasingly devastating consequences of climate change and the generational inequity involved, there is an urgent need to educate our youth on environmental issues and empower them with opportunities to effect positive change. This research focuses on the problem of inconsistent sustainability programs on school campuses, investigates causal factors and identifies areas for transformation. While many prior studies address the significance of sustainability and the key components of successful school waste reduction, energy conservation and environmental education, this study builds on prior research by considering school sustainability programs through a lens of equity and organizational systems. This research utilizes a mixed methods approach, including open-ended interviews and non-experimental survey data, to provide a multi-dimensional view of the state of sustainability programs from a site, district and county systems level. The results of this study reveal how a trajectory of local political decisions and processes contributed to an inequitable structure of school sustainability programs across one county. Within this structure, schools in the same region have substantially different access to resources, support and practice opportunities related to sustainability. Despite the inequity inherent in the structure, individual schools have made significant progress to effect change. Individual and collaborative agency at one school in particular demonstrates how factors such as buy-in, communication, coordination and priorities can contribute to a comprehensive sustainability program. Information gained in this study will benefit school leaders, science teachers and policy makers alike in providing students with equitable opportunities to both learn about environmental responsibility and engage in stewardship for a more sustainable future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An epic bicycle journey across the American hinterland that explores the challenges of climate change alongside a diverse array of American voices. After a distinguished career in climate science as the Director of the UN Global Climate Observing System in Geneva, David Goodrich returned home to the United States to find a nation and a people in denial. Concerned that the American people are willfully deluded by the misinformation about climate that dominates media and politics, David thought a little straight talk could set things right. As they say in Animal House, he decided that "this calls for a stupid and futile gesture on someone's part, and I'm just the guy to do it." Starting on the beach in Delaware, David rode his bike 4,200 miles to Oregon, talking with the people he met on the ultimate road trip. Along the way he learned a great deal about why climate is a complicated issue for many Americans and even more about the country we all share. Climate change is the central environmental issue of our time. But A Hole in the Wind is also about the people Dave met and the experiences he had along the way, like the toddler's beauty pageant in Delaware, the tornado in Missouri, rust-belt towns and their relationship with fracking, and the mined-out uranium ghost town in Wyoming. As he rides, David will discuss the climate with audiences varying from laboratories to diners to elementary schools. Beautifully simple, direct, and honest, A Hole in the Wind is a fresh, refreshing ride through a difficult and controversial topic, and a rich read that makes you glad to be alive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical, bipartisan call to action from the world’s leading thinkers on the environment and sustainability Sustainability has emerged as a global priority over the past several years. The 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change and the adoption of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals through the United Nations have highlighted the need to address critical challenges such as the buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, water shortages, and air pollution. But in the United States, partisan divides, regional disputes, and deep disagreements over core principles have made it nearly impossible to chart a course toward a sustainable future. This timely new book, edited by celebrated scholar Daniel C. Esty, offers fresh thinking and forward-looking solutions from environmental thought leaders across the political spectrum. The book’s forty essays cover such subjects as ecology, environmental justice, Big Data, public health, and climate change, all with an emphasis on sustainability. The book focuses on moving toward sustainability through actionable, bipartisan approaches based on rigorous analytical research.

Book Collections Care and Stewardship

Download or read book Collections Care and Stewardship written by Juilee Decker and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collections Care and Stewardship: Innovative Approaches for Museums considers best practices and innovations related to documenting collections with regard to movement and safe handling of items for transport, display, photography, and treatment; collections storage; and information-sharing within and beyond the museum. The case studies in this volume examine best practices and innovations related to collections with regard to display, interpretation, engagement, storage, conservation treatment, and preservation. Several chapters address undergraduate and graduate coursework and internship experiences in a variety of contexts to offer best practices as well as evaluation of such training opportunities. All of these case studies ask us to think about the responsibilities that we have, as museum professionals, to be stewards—a challenge for all of us in terms of the obligations and responsibilities therein, but also in terms of the challenge to frame our collections as having the capacity to reflect as well as inspire. The Innovative Approaches for Museums series offers case studies, written by scholars and practitioners from museums, galleries, and other institutions, that showcase the original, transformative, and sometimes wholly re-invented methods, techniques, systems, theories, and actions that demonstrate innovative work being done in the museum and cultural sector throughout the world. The authors come from a variety of institutions—in size, type, budget, audience, mission, and collection scope. Each volume offers ideas and support to those working in museums while serving as a resource and primer, as much as inspiration, for students and the museum staff and faculty training future professionals who will further develop future innovative approaches. Book A Journey Toward Environmental Stewardship

Download or read book A Journey Toward Environmental Stewardship written by Michael D. Zagata and published by . This book was released on 2017-06-21 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Journey Toward Environmental Stewardship, Mike Zagata recounts his varied career working as an environmentalist for nearly fifty years. He held an Assistant Professorship at the University of Maine-Orono's School of Forest Resources; was Field Director for The Wildlife Society; Audubon's Director of Federal Relations; Program Development Officer for the National Research Council (National Academy of Sciences), where he formed a committee to address renewable natural resources issues; and tenure with Tenneco, Inc., a Fortune 50 Company. While there he graduated from the University of Virginia's Darden Business School's "The Executive Program." Mike was promoted to Director of Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) for Tenneco Oil E&P. From there he became VP of EH&S forTransco Energy Co. Under his leadership, the companies received the National Wildlife Federation's "Conservation Achievement Award," Ducks Unlimited's "Silver Teal Award," and The Conservation Fund's "Calder Award." He then served in Gov. Pataki's cabinet as Commissioner (CEO) of New York's Dept. of Environmental Conservation. After leaving the DEC he helped found and served as president of the Conservation Alliance of New York, and recently retired as President and CEO of the Ruffed Grouse Society--an international wildlife conservation organization promoting sound forest management for the benefit of both hunted and non-hunted wildlife. His awards/recognition include a letter from President Carter thanking him for his help in passing the Fish & Wildlife Conservation Act of 1980 (later known as CARA), and induction into the "Hall of Fame" by the offshore energy industry for his work at Tenneco on wetlands mitigation banking and "Rigs to Reefs" (converting retired offshore energy production platforms into functioning artificial reefs), and into the New York State Outdoorsman's Hall of Fame.

Book JOURNEY TOWARD ENVIRONMENTAL S

Download or read book JOURNEY TOWARD ENVIRONMENTAL S written by Michael D. Zagata Phd and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2016-09-28 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A healthy environment and a healthy economy are not mutually exclusive. Instead, they are inextricably intertwined. Companies that manage environmental compliance as a profit opportunity gain a competitive advantage. Environmental advocacy groups that push for emotional, as opposed to science-based, solutions are unlikely to achieve success in improving environmental quality. As a result scarce capital is wasted and those asked to fund such programs are more likely to engage in pushback. Review: "Journey...." Is a must read for the lay person and professional alike. Zagata has done it all: Professor and ecological researcher; officer for national wildlife and conservation organizations; Director and VP of environmental health and safety for major energy companies; Commissioner of New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. So he has labored and led both as a policy creator and enforcer. He certainly knows as well that tricky interface between political world and the best aims of a life-long fisherman, hunter and conservationist. In sum, he is a wise and balanced teacher of the principles of environmental stewardship. -Alan B. Donovan, Ph.D. - SUNY-Oneonta President Emeritus. Review: You need only read through the first three paragraphs of the author's opening section to realize that Mike Zagata has a unique perspective on the environmental movement over the past 40+ years. "A Journey to Environmental Stewardship" chronicles a remarkable career in conservation that included roles as teacher, environmental policy lobbyist, corporate environmental leader, chief environmental regulator, and CEO of a national conservation group. Having worked with Mike, my respect for him is best expressed by someone who also reported to him: "Mike espoused a higher standard. He did not accept that it was enough to merely operate in compliance with the law. He understood that sometimes the right thing to do is not just the minimum that one can get away with,

Book Stewardship Collections and Historic Preservation

Download or read book Stewardship Collections and Historic Preservation written by Cinnamon Catlin-Legutko and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2011-11-16 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proper collections care, planning, and conservation is an essential responsibility for a museum of any size, but funding for these obligations often falls to the bottom of funding priorities because its constituencies are the quietest. Small museums need affordable ways to provide basic care for their collections and the tools to lobby for additional funds for the long-term health of collections. Small museums often do not have staff expertise on the maintenance and preservation of these large and expensive pieces of history. This book offers practical tips for collections care, including preservation strategies for historic properties and a primer on managing potential harms to your artifacts.
