Book No Undocumented Child Left Behind

Download or read book No Undocumented Child Left Behind written by Michael A. Olivas and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1982 U. S. Supreme Court case of Plyler v. Doe, which made it possible for undocumented children to enroll in Texas public schools, was a watershed moment for immigrant rights in the United States. The Court struck down both a state statute denying funding for education to undocumented children and a municipal school district's attempt to charge an annual $1,000 tuition fee for each undocumented student to compensate for the lost state funding. Yet while this case has not returned to the Supreme Court, it is frequently contested at the state and local level. In No Undocumented Child Left Behind, Michael A. Olivas tells a fascinating history of the landmark case, examining how, 30 years later, Plyler v. Doe continues to suffer from implementation issues and requires additional litigation and vigilance to enforce the ruling. He takes a comprehensive look at the legal regime it established regarding the education of undocumented school children, moves up through its implementation, including direct and indirect attacks on it, and closes with the ongoing, highly charged debates over the Development, Relief, and Education for Minors (DREAM) Act, which aims to give conditional citizenship to undocumented college students who graduated from US high schools and have been in the country for at least five years. Listen to Michael Olivas on WYPF 88.1 FM, as he takes a look back 30 years to the Supreme Court case that made it possible for undocumented children to enroll in public schools and the highly-charged political and legal battles that have ensued.

Book The Children of Undocumented Immigrants

Download or read book The Children of Undocumented Immigrants written by David M. Haugen and published by Greenhaven Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2013-08-08 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Migration Policy Institute released a fact sheet in 2016, stating that children born in the U.S. of a parent or parents who are undocumented immigrants, are placed at a severe disadvantage in life. This data was collected from 5.1 million children who are living with an unauthorized immigrant parent. Researchers found that these children are likely not to be enrolled in preschool, are likely to be held in a socioeconomic level that keeps them from developing and gaining access to resources, and are likely to fail in English proficiency that is necessary to move ahead in life. Place on top of that, the stress that their parent might be deported at any minute. These children are at risk, without a doubt. While U.S. policies on immigration and border control are hotly debated, this volume makes sure that we don't forget what's really at stake, the future of our young. Your readers are given the full breadth of perspectives on this topic, through eyewitness accounts, governmental views, scientific analysis, and newspaper accounts. Important details are pulled out from the text and presented in italicized font so that readers can track the facts, and refer to them for research and report writing. Most important of all, by reading balanced and well-researched entries, students will be able to form intelligent opinions on this pressing issue.

Book excerpt: From the author of the award-winning The Youngest Marcher comes a picture book about the true story of Alfredo Lopez, an undocumented boy involved in a landmark Supreme Court case that still ensures children’s right to education today. Alfredo Lopez has so many questions before starting second grade! Will his friends be in his class? Will his teacher speak Spanish? But then his parents tell him that he has to stay home, and Alfredo’s questions change. Why can’t he go to school with the other kids? And why is his family going to the courthouse? In 1977, the school district of Tyler, Texas, informed parents that, unless they could provide proof of citizenship, they would have to pay for their children to attend public school. Four undocumented families fought back in a legal battle that went all the way to the Supreme Court. Alfredo was one of the students involved in Plyler v. Doe, which made a difference for children all over the country for years to come.
