Book Education of Military Dependent Students

Download or read book Education of Military Dependent Students written by George A. Scott and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1990s, Congress has supplemented the Department of Education's (Education) Impact Aid program by providing funds for the Department of Defense's (DOD) Impact Aid program to compensate school districts with a high number of military dependent students. The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010 required GAO to review the use of these funds. GAO reviewed (1) what is known about the utilization and effectiveness of DOD Impact Aid funds, (2) the challenges faced by school districts in serving military dependent students, and (3) how DOD and Education have collaborated on their assistance. To address these issues, GAO conducted a Web-based survey of all 154 school districts that received DOD Impact Aid in any year from 2001 to 2009, with a response rate of 77 percent. GAO also interviewed officials from DOD and Education and seven school districts in five states, ranging in school district size, location, and percentage of military dependent students. The findings from these visits cannot be projected nationwide, but illustrate valuable perspectives. GAO recommends that the Secretary of Education determine whether to require school districts to report data on the academic outcomes of military dependent students, and if so, to determine the need for any additional legislative authority. Education agreed with GAO's recommendation, and DOD provided oral concurrence. Appended are: (1) Objectives, Scope, and Methodology; (2) Information on Additional Mandate Provisions; (3) The 13 Objectives from Education and DOD's MOU; (4) Comments from the Department of Education; and (5) GAO Contact and Staff Acknowledgments. (Contains 2 tables, 7 figures, and 42 footnotes.).

Book Education of Military Dependent Students

Download or read book Education of Military Dependent Students written by Hernick A. Demello and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family concerns about education affect readiness and retention of military personnel, according to the Department of Defense (DOD). The majority of children of military families in the United States attend public schools. A 2008 DOD study recommended offering military families a public charter school option in areas with poorly-performing local schools. This book examines the guidance needed for military base schools on start-up and operational issues; a review of charter schools on military installations; and a study recommending better oversight to improve services for military dependent students with special needs.

Book A Value added Study of a Federal Grant Program in Mathematics for Military Dependent Students

Download or read book A Value added Study of a Federal Grant Program in Mathematics for Military Dependent Students written by Jay C. Marquand and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Closing the achievement gap in public education means all students are expected to be learning at grade level. In response to federal mandates requiring schools to attain specific student achievement benchmarks, many schools are placing greater resources into support programs designed to increase student achievement. Military dependent students experience unique challenges including, ongoing parent absences, extended parental deployments, and frequent moving and relocation. In California Unified School District (CUSD) where 37% of the student population is military connected, these challenges can place military dependent students at risk of failing socially, emotionally and academically. As a result, CUSD implemented an individualized, computer-assisted instructional model to support military dependent students performing below grade level. The purpose of this study was to provide additional, value-added information, to the findings of the district's annual assessment report of a three-year federally funded grant designed to close the mathematics achievement gap for military dependent students performing below grade level at a California middle school. This study focused on the value-added support program titled, Students Achieving Through Technology (SATT-21) a three year, 1.4 million dollar federally funded grant designated to CUSD in order to address the achievement gap of military dependent students performing below grade level in mathematics. The researcher used a qualitative approach (survey and interviews) to gain insights into the perceptions, concerns, and suggestions of the participants involved in the SATT-21 program at the district's middle school to address the research questions posed for the study. After a careful analysis of the district's annual assessment report, in combination with the responses from the participant's experiences in the program, findings revealed three major focus areas associated with the grant: (1) communication, (2) curriculum, and (3) professional development. Numerous themes emerged within each of the focus areas which supported suggestions and recommendations for the SATT-21 program. The results of this study provide value-added information for the district and stakeholders investing resources into school support programs designed to increase student achievement, particularly for military dependent students performing below grade level in mathematics.

Book Children of War Preparing Military Dependents for Higher Education by Providing Comprehensive Focused Support to Improve Education Outcomes

Download or read book Children of War Preparing Military Dependents for Higher Education by Providing Comprehensive Focused Support to Improve Education Outcomes written by Deborah E Lucas and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 2001, over two million children have experienced having one or both of their parents deployed (Tunac de Pedro et al., 2018). There is significant research that shows that "military children experience tremendous psychological strain as a result of stressful military related life events" (Tunac de Pedro et al., 2011, p. 567). The research that currently exists focuses on childhood experience and intervention at the K-12 level. The research on best practices for supporting military children presented herein could form the foundation of how colleges and universities can provide similar support to military dependents in higher education. This study focused on supporting the children of military service members in higher education by developing students' self-advocacy and providing academic support and mentoring for these students while they were concurrently enrolled in high school and college. The intent of the interventions discussed in this study was to provide those students with the tools they need to successfully navigate veteran-focused resources on college campuses and to self-advocate for the resources they need to be successful. The findings presented in this study provide the foundation for recommendations for further research and intervention. The analysis and conclusions are limited due to the framework of the intervention which was exacerbated by COVID-19. While this study may not have been conducted across a broad institutional manner, the findings demonstrate that implementing a course curriculum and providing focused interventions show that student success is related to focused intervention and a student's feelings of validation. This study further shows that students who are military dependents have a clear sense of that identity and what it means to themselves and to their community. I have argued throughout this study that there needs to be focused attention on military dependents in higher education. Even with the end of America's longest war, there is still a generation of young people whose lives are marked by their parent's sacrifice and service. The very least that we can do is to make every effort to validate these student's experiences and to support them as they pursue their academic goals

Book excerpt: As part of its transformation to prepare the armed forces to meet current and future challenges, the Department of Defense (DOD) is expanding its use of advanced distributed learning (ADL) techniques in senior- and intermediate-level officer professional military education (PME).To determine whether DOD uses a systematic process for evaluating the results of ADL application, this study examined DOD?s metrics for assessing program effectiveness, compared DOD?s criteria for converting courses to ADL with those of private sector institutions, and identified challenges to ADL implementation. Researchers reviewed and assessed policies and guidance of several DOD offices responsible for overseeing PME activities, studied experience in the private education sector and other parts of the government in measuring the effectiveness of education programs, and surveyed 437 current students and graduates of senior- and intermediate-level PME programs regarding their PME experience. Overall, DOD does not have specific performance goals and metrics with which to assess ADL effectiveness in PME. Although there are established frameworks for assessing program effectiveness by focusing on metrics for learning outcomes, DOD?s oversight focuses on educational inputs such as facilities, student to faculty ratios, and student body composition. Criteria for converting PME courses and curricula to ADL vary by school and military service, are based on subjective choices as to which content is suited for online delivery, and are focused solely on nonresident programs. DOD?s implementation of ADL programs for PME compares favorably with private-sector institutions. Cultural, technological, and resource challenges affect ADL implementation. Five appendixes present study scope and methodology; methodology for the survey of nonresident PME students and graduates; survey responses; ADL applications and additional features of nonresident programs; and comments from DOD. Contains five appenhree tables.

Book Global Perspectives on Education Research

Download or read book Global Perspectives on Education Research written by Lori Diane Hill and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Perspectives on Education Research echoes the breadth and scope of education research worldwide. It features the work of established and emerging scholars from a range of universities and research institutions in Africa, Europe, and North America. The book’s ten chapters are organized around four themes: Education Policy, Teaching and Learning, School Context and Student Outcomes, and Assessment and Measurement. Each chapter offers cross-cultural, transnational, or comparative insights on some of the most pressing challenges and promising opportunities for improving education around the world. Across thematic areas, these perspectives shape new ways of understanding context as an influence on, and a framework for, conceptual insights into education policy and practice at the international, national, and local levels. With chapters on topics including the cultural complexities of literacy, the effect of socioeconomic inequality on student learning, and the tension between education for global competitiveness and education for global citizenship as national policy strategies, Global Perspectives on Education Research addresses issues and questions that will interest education researchers, educators, policy makers, and societal leaders worldwide. This volume is a publication of the World Education Research Association (WERA). WERA is an association of major national, regional, and international specialty research associations dedicated to advancing education research as a scientific and scholarly field. WERA undertakes initiatives that are global in nature and thus transcend what any one association can accomplish in its own country, region, or area of specialization.

Book excerpt: The relationship among the federal government, the states, and parents with regard to education is increasingly dysfunctional. Parental control over their children's education has gained impressive momentum in recent years at the state level. Meanwhile, states have been increasingly willing to relinquish sovereignty over education in exchange for more federal dollars. Failure would help bring clarity to these issues by examining whether students and the country better off after 30 years with the Department of Education and suggesting alternatives to an ever-expanding federal education bureaucracy. Part I would begin by examining the development of the current Department of Education, including the legislation that gave rise to it, and the pressure groups that have shaped it. Additional chapters would examine related issues including the arguments for and against the creation of a national education department, its origin, current structure, spending, and growth over time. Part II would examine the results to date against the education department's own standards. These include overall student achievement nationally before and after the advent of the Department of Education as well as international comparisons of U.S. student achievement. Outcomes of some of the largest Department of Education programs would also be considered in this section, along with some of the lesser-known department programs and initiatives. Part III would examine truly federal alternatives to the current tug-of-war between the national and state governments in light of the growing parental-choice movement. Included in this section would be chapters examining a strict-constitutionalist model, which denies any federal authority in education. Another alternative model examined would be the National Bureau of Education model, inspired by the original 1867 precursor to the current Department of Education, whose primary mission was to serve as a repository of information so schools nationwide could emulate best practices. In addition, this section would seek to include cross-country comparisons of education systems of top-performing Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries.
