Book excerpt: The Under-Representation of Black and Minority Ethnic Educators in Education evidences that discrimination at an individual, institutional and structural level is still experienced in the leadership of children's learning. The analysis evaluates the extent to which under-representation is a result of chance, coincidence or design. Based on original research using a mixed-methods approach, and drawing on Critical Race Theory this book examines the under-representation of Black and minority ethnic (BAME) educators in education. It identifies over 40 separate codes emerging from interviews with BAME leaders in children's learning. These codes include surveillance, isolation, awareness of their position, the need to be better, professional development, the complexity of racism and the difficulties of talking about racism. The book contributes to educational leadership in questioning the extent to which equitable outcomes can be delivered when the education service is itself a site and source of inequality and discrimination. We are using the word 'minority' to refer not to relative numbers but to 'the condition of being inferior or subordinate'. This could be taken to include students with a variety of handicaps - physical, intellectual, socioeconomic, cultural; pupils with low literacy or language problems; and victims of race or sex discrimination. However, this book concentrates on the problems of students who are disadvantaged by differences of culture and language, especially ethnic minorities who do not possess the background, attributes and skills of the dominant group and are thus distanced from the sources of power and status in the country they inhabit.

Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this book gives an inventory of factors contributing to ethnic prejudice in seven countries and the role of formal education among them on the basis of national surveys. It appears that education is crucial in all the countries surveyed and contributes to more tolerant views of ethnic and national minorities in Western European countries, Poland and the United States. The positive effects of education, however, do not always counter the negative effects of personality characteristics and conservative values on ethnic prejudice. Moreover, the negative effects of less formal education may be reinforced by perceived economical competition of ethnic minorities and thereby further bolster prejudiced views of the less educated. This indicates that formal education alone is not sufficient to change prejudiced views. Other forms of socialization transmitting values leading to open-mindedness and the ability to secure one's economic position have to support the positive effects of formal education as well.
