Book excerpt: This book provides a careful historical analysis of the co-evolution of educational attainment and the wage structure in the United States through the twentieth century. The authors propose that the twentieth century was not only the American Century but also the Human Capital Century. That is, the American educational system is what made America the richest nation in the world. Its educational system had always been less elite than that of most European nations. By 1900 the U.S. had begun to educate its masses at the secondary level, not just in the primary schools that had remarkable success in the nineteenth century. The book argues that technological change, education, and inequality have been involved in a kind of race. During the first eight decades of the twentieth century, the increase of educated workers was higher than the demand for them. This had the effect of boosting income for most people and lowering inequality. However, the reverse has been true since about 1980. This educational slowdown was accompanied by rising inequality. The authors discuss the complex reasons for this, and what might be done to ameliorate it.

Young adults are key contributors to the nation's workforce and military services and, since many are parents, to the healthy development of the next generation. Although 'millennials' have received attention in the popular media in recent years, young adults are too rarely treated as a distinct population in policy, programs, and research. Instead, they are often grouped with adolescents or, more often, with all adults. Currently, the nation is experiencing economic restructuring, widening inequality, a rapidly rising ratio of older adults, and an increasingly diverse population. The possible transformative effects of these features make focus on young adults especially important. A systematic approach to understanding and responding to the unique circumstances and needs of today's young adults can help to pave the way to a more productive and equitable tomorrow for young adults in particular and our society at large. Investing in The Health and Well-Being of Young Adults describes what is meant by the term young adulthood, who young adults are, what they are doing, and what they need. This study recommends actions that nonprofit programs and federal, state, and local agencies can take to help young adults make a successful transition from adolescence to adulthood. According to this report, young adults should be considered as a separate group from adolescents and older adults. Investing in The Health and Well-Being of Young Adults makes the case that increased efforts to improve high school and college graduate rates and education and workforce development systems that are more closely tied to high-demand economic sectors will help this age group achieve greater opportunity and success. The report also discusses the health status of young adults and makes recommendations to develop evidence-based practices for young adults for medical and behavioral health, including preventions. What happens during the young adult years has profound implications for the rest of the life course, and the stability and progress of society at large depends on how any cohort of young adults fares as a whole. Investing in The Health and Well-Being of Young Adults will provide a roadmap to improving outcomes for this age group as they transition from adolescence to adulthood.

This book consists of studies capturing the life-course from the cradle to the grave. The research questions include long-term consequences of childhood conditions; family formation and school-careers; work and parental leave; gender discrimination in job promotion; divorce and occupational career; persistence in poverty; and the intriguing question of why the highly educated tend to survive everyone else. The studies shed light on the relation between family and work, on gender inequality, social class differences, welfare state redistribution, and labour market processes. They do this in a particular context, namely Sweden in the post-war period that is, during the decades that formed one of the most advanced welfare states in modern history. One chapter provides a descriptive account of institutional and life-course change in Sweden during that period. Most authors use the Swedish level-of-living surveys, a unique data set providing ample opportunity to study social processes in a longitudinal perspective. Book excerpt: A study investigated the contribution of adult education in complementing and mediating the effects of early formal schooling on life chances, job satisfaction, and general well-being. Data collected for the cohort of Swedish men followed up in the Malmo study from 1938 to 1988 were examined. The study used measures of home background, disposition to learn in the classroom, cognitive ability assessed in childhood and early adulthood, youth educational attainment, and indicators of occupational status, earned income, job satisfaction, and well-being measured during the early, middle, and late stages of life career. Measures of participation in adult education were available from 30 to 56 years of age. Path models were investigated using linear structural relations analysis. The findings indicate that: (1) youth education influences participation in adult education at all ages; (2) early participation in adult education also influences adult participation during subsequent periods; (3) relative to the diminishing effects of youth education on occupational status after 30 years of age, the effects of adult education on occupational status increase with increasing age; and (4) the direct effects of youth education on earnings increase sharply from 25 to 40 years of age and diminish gradually thereafter. The study concludes that research that has used short-term indicators of the effects of adult education has underestimated the contribution of adult education because participants have not been followed up for a sufficient length of time. In general, participants in adult education regard their lives as more worthwhile, full, rich, and interesting than those who do not take part. Book excerpt: Since 1986, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) has collected information from 11th-grade students about their employment activities. Out of the 29,000 students asked about work in the 1986 assessment, 54% reported working some amount of time each week, and over 28% reported working more than 15 hours per week. Thus, of 2.9 million 11th graders questioned in 1986, an estimated 1.6 million were employed and attending school. Data in this report cover the general characteristics and academic achievement of working students included in the NAEP as well as ancillary information from other studies. Student characteristics analyzed include gender, race/ethnicity, parents' education, high school program type, mathematics and science courses taken, postsecondary expectations, absenteeism, homework time, and television viewing time. Results indicate that: (1) employment has various effects on student achievement; (2) schools vary in the amount of time and effort they demand from their students, but it appears that some teachers lower their expectations regarding working students; (3) students' jobs should be examined in terms of content compatible with youth development and achievement; and (4) where work assignments are connected to schooling objectives, work can complement, rather than compete with, schooling objectives.
