Book Redesigning Continuing Education in the Health Professions

Download or read book Redesigning Continuing Education in the Health Professions written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-03-12 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today in the United States, the professional health workforce is not consistently prepared to provide high quality health care and assure patient safety, even as the nation spends more per capita on health care than any other country. The absence of a comprehensive and well-integrated system of continuing education (CE) in the health professions is an important contributing factor to knowledge and performance deficiencies at the individual and system levels. To be most effective, health professionals at every stage of their careers must continue learning about advances in research and treatment in their fields (and related fields) in order to obtain and maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills in caring for their patients. Many health professionals regularly undertake a variety of efforts to stay up to date, but on a larger scale, the nation's approach to CE for health professionals fails to support the professions in their efforts to achieve and maintain proficiency. Redesigning Continuing Education in the Health Professions illustrates a vision for a better system through a comprehensive approach of continuing professional development, and posits a framework upon which to develop a new, more effective system. The book also offers principles to guide the creation of a national continuing education institute.

Book Conflict of Interest in Medical Research Education and Practice

Download or read book Conflict of Interest in Medical Research Education and Practice written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-09-16 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collaborations of physicians and researchers with industry can provide valuable benefits to society, particularly in the translation of basic scientific discoveries to new therapies and products. Recent reports and news stories have, however, documented disturbing examples of relationships and practices that put at risk the integrity of medical research, the objectivity of professional education, the quality of patient care, the soundness of clinical practice guidelines, and the public's trust in medicine. Conflict of Interest in Medical Research, Education, and Practice provides a comprehensive look at conflict of interest in medicine. It offers principles to inform the design of policies to identify, limit, and manage conflicts of interest without damaging constructive collaboration with industry. It calls for both short-term actions and long-term commitments by institutions and individuals, including leaders of academic medical centers, professional societies, patient advocacy groups, government agencies, and drug, device, and pharmaceutical companies. Failure of the medical community to take convincing action on conflicts of interest invites additional legislative or regulatory measures that may be overly broad or unduly burdensome. Conflict of Interest in Medical Research, Education, and Practice makes several recommendations for strengthening conflict of interest policies and curbing relationships that create risks with little benefit. The book will serve as an invaluable resource for individuals and organizations committed to high ethical standards in all realms of medicine.

Book The Lifelong Learning Journey of Health Professionals Continuing Education and Professional Development

Download or read book The Lifelong Learning Journey of Health Professionals Continuing Education and Professional Development written by Filipe, Helena Prior and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2024-03-06 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health professionals grapple with a critical challenge: the traditional Continuous Medical Education (CME) model falls short of fostering the unique skills and self-directed learning required for a dynamic career. As medical practitioners navigate a world of new epidemiological models, technologies, and strategies, the need for a transformative solution becomes evident. The Lifelong Learning Journey of Health Professionals: Continuing Education and Professional Development is a book that not only identifies the limitations of existing education models but also provides a comprehensive solution for ushering in a new era of lifelong learning. This compelling book advocates for a paradigm shift towards Continuous Professional Development (CPD), a contemporary concept that embraces non-traditional learning formats. It dismantles the inadequacies of credit-based training by emphasizing the importance of self-direction and self-assessment for adult learners. From core principles for designing a robust CPD system to exploring successful models, alternative credentials, and the role of learning communities, the book offers a holistic approach to reshaping medical education.

Book Evaluation of Continuing Education in the Health Professions

Download or read book Evaluation of Continuing Education in the Health Professions written by Stephen Abrahamson and published by Springer. This book was released on 1985 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phil R. Manning "Can you prove that continuing education really makes any difference?" Over the years, educators concerned with continuing education (CE) for health professionals have either heard or voiced that question in one form or another more than once. But because of the difficulty in measuring the specific effects of a given course, program, or conference, the question has not been answered satisfactorily. Since CE is costly, since CE is now mandated in some states for re-registration, and since its worth has not been proven in for mal evaluation research, the pressure to evaluate remains strong. The question can be partially answered by a more careful definition of continuing education, particularly the goals to be achieved by CEo Another part of the answer depends on the development of a stronger commitment to evaluation of CE by its providers. But a significant part of the answer might be provided through the improvement of methods used in evaluation of continuing education for health professionals. To address this last concern, the Development and Demonstration Center in Continuing Education for the Health Professions of the Univer sity of Southern California organized and conducted a meeting of academi cians and practitioners in evaluation of continuing education. During a three-day period, participants heard formal presentations by five invited speakers and then discussed the application of the state of the art of educa tional evaluation to problems of evaluation of continuing education for health professionals.

Book Continuing Medical Education

Download or read book Continuing Medical Education written by Adrienne B. Rosof and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1992-01-27 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book was intended to be a standard guide--a reference manual--that would be useful not only in the mechanics of producing a single program but also in organizing and operating a continuing medical education (CME) department on an ongoing basis. All over North America this primer has become a valuable aid to CME workers in the many locations--medical schools, professional associations, hospitals, specialty societies, industry--where the daily activities of CME are carried out. Outstanding features. It successfully combines clear explanations of some difficult concepts and theory in language that everyone will understand, practical examples, suggestions that come only from long years of experience, and brevity. Anyone interested in CME will want to own it. JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) The first edition of this book was written with the aim of helping workers in the continuing medical education (CME) arena fulfill their responsibility to provide needed information to practicing physicians. Its purpose was to supply fundamental tools for CME providers to use in planning and carrying out their daily work. It was intended to be a standard guide--a reference manual--that would be useful not only in the mechanics of producing a single program but also in organizing and operating a CME department on an ongoing basis. There is anecdotal evidence from all over North America that this primer has become a valuable aid to CME workers in the many locations--medical schools, professional associations, hospitals, specialty societies, industry--where the daily activities of CME are carried out. This second edition is divided into six parts. The first introduces the subject, looking at it in terms of its history, its current condition, and the major role played in its conduct by the voluntary accreditation system. The second discusses, with suitable theoretical underpinnings, the principles of adult education and how they apply practically to CME. The third and fourth parts turn to the operational aspects of CME, first in how to establish and manage a CME office in various locations, and then relating to such general subjects as marketing, planning meetings, using the medical library, using the general resources available, and the special relationship between CME and industry. The fifth section focuses on the individual learner, including the role of peer review in identifying learning needs, both for the average physician learner and the special physician learner whose competence is under question. The final part offers a glimpse down the road both in terms of CME (its ethical aspects) and the science of CME (the use of informatics technology), as well as its general prognosis.
