Book excerpt: Ecological and environmental education in schools and institutes of further and higher education has gained increasing importance in recent years, both as an area of study in its own right, and as a component of other disciplines. There is now a requirement in many countries to include the environment in both formal and informal curricula. This volume presents a long overdue account of the status, progress and underlying concepts of ecological education. It explores areas of recent development and debate in ecological and environmental education, describes the evolution and development of environmental education in different countries and examines the importance and provision for fieldwork. Case studies illustrate how ecological studies are undertaken in several culturally different settings. This book will interest teachers and research workers in ecology, environmental science and education.

This book was released on 2011-12-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A workshop was held in June 1994 at the University of Western Ontario, London, concerned with education and training in global environmental change science. It was principally devoted to post-school education from first year university to postgraduate levels. I have arranged the papers and the results of discussions in the following order: Section 1: Introduction These papers set the scene. It begins with one by Beran whose original idea the workshop was. Schneider outlines various ways in which interdisciplinary courses in general and global change science in particular can be set up. Fyfe looks at the wider issues of global change that affect us all. There are then papers which examine major problems (Leal Filho; and Troost) and programmes to meet them (Carter; Fisher). Harger Section 2: Global Change Science Courses These papers are concerned with courses concerned with various aspects of global change courses. They include contributions from nine countries at different levels of secondary and university education. Section 3: Resources for teaching Global Change Science New resources are needed for effective courses, particularly those in which students can participate actively. There are wide selections both in terms of topics and teaching strategies, most of which are interactive. Section 4: Workshop discussions The workshop participants split themselves amongst three groups, one to discuss early undergraduate courses, another with senior undergraduate courses and the third with postgraduate courses. Their discussions are brought together in this section and common themes are identified.

Book Natural Resources Sustainability and Humanity

Download or read book Natural Resources Sustainability and Humanity written by Angela Mendonca and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-04-17 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly, this book is the written up-graded version of the topics discussed during the Small Meeting of the 2nd International School Congress: Natural Resources, Sustainability and Humanity, held in Braga, Portugal, 5-8 May 2010 with the diverse participation of scientists, educators and governmental representatives. The Earth hosts an immense ecosystem, colonized by millions of species for billions of years but only for a few tens of thousands of years by humans. Environmental history tells though that it was humankind that shaped the environment as no other species. History, geography, religion and politics among other reasons have differentiated populations with respect to access to safe food and water, education, health, and to space and natural resource utilization. The globalization era of trade, information and communication is shortening distances and increasing overall wealth, but, as is pointed out in this book, it is also contributing to the propagation of diseases, and to the modification or even destruction of native ecosystems by exotic invasive species. Man is the only species that has the perception of its history, evolution, of the consequences of its decisions, and that there is a future ahead. It is also the only species that has the potential to change it. This awareness can be a source of anxiety and contradictory behaviours, but it is also the key to changing attitudes towards the construction of a common sustainable home, by committed education, interdisciplinary approaches, mobilization and empowerment of people and political consonant actions.

Book Environmental Education and Advocacy

Download or read book Environmental Education and Advocacy written by Edward A. Johnson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-03-03 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental education has often blurred the distinction between ecological science and environmental advocacy. Growing public awareness of environmental problems and desire for action may be contributing to this blurring. There is a need to clarify the distinction between the role of ecological science and the role of social and political values for the environment within environmental education. This book addresses this need by examining the changing perspectives of ecology in education and the changing perspectives of education in environmental education. Guidelines are provided for assessing the science and education perspectives within environmental education, along with suggested frameworks for development of programs and resources that integrate current science, education and action. This book will be of interest to environmental educators, ecologists interested in environmental education, and curriculum and resource developers.
