Book Train the Brain for Peace Or War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Train the Brain for Peace Or War Classic Reprint written by University of Oregon and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Train the Brain for Peace or War No young man ever faced a more uncertain or puzzling future than the young man of today. The old ways of life have been abandoned forever. The great war is changing everything. Governments have fallen and more are tottering, millions of men have died and hundreds of millions have been shaken from their accustomed grooves. Whole classes of society have been fired with new ideas and have been accustomed to new needs. War debts have been laid upon the peoples so heavy that to pay them off will change the whole character of industry. Among all the uncertainties that puzzle the young man who is trying to decide what to do in this most uncertain time, one thing is sure: changes are coming - changes that will affect every man, woman and child in the world. Manufacturing is already undergoing a new birth; even now nothing is as it was even a few months ago. Commerce has thrown the old plans to the winds and is working out new ways of accomplishing new ends. War has thrown whole systems of transportation into the melting pot, and it remains to be seen what will come out. What shall a young man or woman do in a topsy-turvy world? How can he prepare himself for the future at a time when the wisest man cannot tell him what the future will be like? The answer is: A broad education has one sovereign value besides its many other values: it prepares a man to meet the unexpected. War times and the strenuous days that are coming after the war are sure to demand the Trained Man. The day of the untrained man ended when the great war began. Nor is there one chance in a hundred that his day - even such a day as he once had - will ever come back. War had no use for him except as a private soldier. But the trained man - the day has passed when he can be wasted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Teaching Peace in the Schools Through Instruction in American History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Teaching Peace in the Schools Through Instruction in American History Classic Reprint written by Wilbur Fisk Gordy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-11 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching Peace in the Schools Through Instruction in American History To the observer of important world movements to-day, two antagonistic groups of phenomena present themselves. One has to do with the interests of international peace and good will; the other with the stupendous preparations for war. Such highly civilized countries as England and Germany for example, are imposing overwhelming financial burdens upon themselves in order to build up their armies and navies. To such an extent have jealousy, fear, and suspicion seized them that in wild panic they rush to build Dreadnoughts and other wise increase their fighting strength. The claim is that great armaments are absolutely necessary for the preservation of peace, although it is plain that such preparation invites national bankruptcy. On the other hand, such organizations as the inter-parliamentary Union, The Hague Conferences, and the five hundred peace societies of the world are moulding public opinion in favor of a new international spirit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teachers College and Post-War Reconstruction In time Of war it is wise to prepare for the peace that is to follow. Educational institutions should play an important part in the social, political, economic, and educational readjustments that will inevitably follow the global conflict now in progress. Many domestic issues affecting vitally every citizen Of this coun try demand attention. The manner of their settlement will affect our lives, our welfare, our standards Of living for many years to come. The state teachers college is a leader of thought in the broad field Of general public education. It probably comes in as intimate touch with the intelligent and aggressively thinking people of this country as any other institution. It teaches, leads, develops the ideas Of prospective teachers who go out among the people and have a large part in shaping the ideals and the habits of our people. A few particular fields of instruction in the teachers college are in a favorable position, because of the stress of war activities, to point out at this particular time ways in which our thinking, our habits, and our economy are likely to be readjusted if we are to secure the maximum benefits from our war experience and from the peace after the war is over. Book The War and Education Addresses Classic Reprint

Download or read book The War and Education Addresses Classic Reprint written by F. West and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War and Education Addresses These addresses are collected in the hope they may help to keep the educational lessons of the war in vivid remembrance. It seems incredible that men should ever forget them. Yet many will do so as soon as the storm drifts away. Our American schooling has been weaker on the side of memory than in some other directions, so that it has become only too easy to forget. If through failure to perceive and remember, we fail to embody the teaching of the war in our education, the loss to our nation will be enormous, because we shall lose the one new impulse which can both save and strengthen our entire schooling from beginning to end. That new impulse is the pow erful revival of the belief in discipline and duty, as opposed to all sordid or sentimental theories. If it is forgotten or ignored, our schools and col leges will sink lower. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Patriotism and Peace

Download or read book Patriotism and Peace written by Lucia Ames Mead and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patriotism and Peace: How to Teach Them in Schools This education is new and practical; it aims at nothing Utopian. It supplies knowledge of new methods of preventing latent evil from finding out let. Just as the latent hoodlumism in the child ofthe gutter is prevented from. Coming to the surface if wholesome activities in a good playground are provided, just as passion which once found vent in duelling is largely side-tracked when courts are well established, so latent antagonisms between communities may be prevented from ending in stupid waste of property and life by the use of methods made practicable only since democracy and rapid communication have brought about new world-conditions. If our country is to fulfil its destiny, the future voter must learn these methods and believe in them; they are, in my opinion, of incalculably more consequence to the republic than his knowl edge of square root, or participial adjectives, or the list of planets, or the number of men who fell at Antietam. The new School Peace League, which aims to give the teacher the power to give the child the new tools which this practical age of international ism demands, is probably the most important single agency for this end in American schools to-day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The month of November 1916 in Russia was outwardly unmarked by seismic events, but beneath the surface, society seethed fiercely. In Petrograd, luxury-store windows are still brightly lit; the Duma debates the monarchy, the course of war, and clashing paths to reform; the workers in the miserable munitions factories veer increasingly toward sedition. At the front all is stalemate except for sudden death's capricious visits, while in the countryside sullen anxiety among hard-pressed farmers is rapidly replacing patriotism. In Zurich, Lenin, with the smallest of all revolutionary groups, plots his sinister logistical miracle. With masterly and moving empathy, through the eyes of both historical and fictional protagonists, Solzhenitsyn unforgettably transports us to that time and place--the last of pre-Soviet Russia. Translated by H.T. Willetts. November 1916 is the second volume in Solzhenitsyn's multi-part work, the Red Wheel, following August 1914. The final volumes will deal with March and April of 1917. Each volume concentrates on a historical turning point, or "knot," as the wheel rolls on inexorably toward revolution.

Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education by Violence: Essays on the War and the Future IN the fat, green days before 1914, a book was made in a manner that had become almost con ventional. You lived, you studied, you thought, and then retired, like an expectant mother, to some mental solitude, where the travail in due and decor ous order was ended, and the book came forth complete. But in this book, conceived in war time and finished in the early days of peace, I have been subject to a different ordering. Life burned intensely in 1918. The battle-front, the tumult uous humanity behind the lines, Great Britain and France at war, where I was a humble observer, flung imperious summons. Ideas, hopefully in terpretative of the surging forces loose everywhere, shot into the mind, sometimes in a trench, some times in a munitions factory, on a steamer deck, or at midnight in Piccadilly, and would wait only for the quiet of an Oxford garden, or the peace of a room high hung in Kensington above a park cheery with thrushes, to be worked out as far as the uncertaintie's of the time would permit.
