Darker because the condition of the world will have grown so much worse that the recurrence Of like calamities will have been recognized as a thing to be expected and the causes of those calamities as beyond all human cure. Rather let us strive that all the suffering this war has brought, and all the sacrifices of heroic lives it has witnessed, shall not have been in vain. James bryce, Essays and Addresses in Wartime, chap. V, p. 183 Why then should a State shrink, in the name Of honor, from giving guarantees for its rectitude of conduct? Why should it not be willing to submit the question of what is honorable, in given circumstances, to those who can fairly measure its aims and motives, and await a verdict? Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book Religious Education and Democracy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Religious Education and Democracy Classic Reprint written by Benjamin Severance Winchester and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education and Democracy The present world situation compels a serious reexamination of the foundations of democracy. Especially does it necessitate a consideration of educational processes and materials. In the haste to achieve efficiency may it not be that some indispensable values have been sacrificed? The words of Jesus sound again with a new emphasis: "What shall it profit a man. if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" The same applies to a nation as well as to the individual. "Has democracy failed?" men are asking to-day. Has Christianity failed? These have not failed, but, as one recent writer has said, they have been found difficult and have not yet been fairly tried. Under the conviction that a fresh study of the relation of religious education to democracy would just now be especially timely, the present writer prepared for the Commission on Christian Education of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America a Survey of Week-day Religious Instruction. In this task many valuable suggestions and criticisms were made by the members of the Commission. The writer would express his peculiar obligation to the chairman, Dean W. F. Tillett, D.D.; the secretary, the Rev. H. H. Meyer, D.D.; and to the chairman of the special subcommittee appointed for this purpose, Professor W. J. Thompson, D.D. This Survey, which appeared as a part of the Quadrennial Report of the Commission, has been carefully revised and is now contained in Part I of the present volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of to-Morrow: The Adaptation of School Curricula to Economic Democracy One in touch with educational thought to-day in any progressive country realises that there is great diversity of opinion regarding the value of the work now being done in the schools. During the past ten years the present writer, in the discharge of certain special duties, has found it necessary to read many hundreds of editorials in the leading newspapers at home and abroad regarding contemporary educational practices. While in many cases there has been hearty praise of both the curriculum and the methods in the schools of to-day, yet the deepest impression made by the reading of these editorials has been that there is widespread popular discontent with educational institutions as they are now conducted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education for the Twentieth Century The growth of democracy, bene ficial though it has been. Has doubt less had its effect. Every one is anxious to get on in the world, and recognizes that knowledge is power. The modern system of written examinations tends to a wrong idea of education. Unfor tunately character has no value in deciding whether or not a candi date is to pass an examination. The boy who fails in algebra may be debarred from matriculation, even though his principles are good. On the other hand, 'one who has not sufficient will power to abstain from the use of cigars may be admitted to the university by barely making one-third of the marks in each subject. Progress in character does not receive due recognition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Changing Order: A Study of Democracy Of popular control was, however, acknowledged and in Lincoln, the peasant president, the man of common fibre, unlettered in the European sense of culture, yet the ac credited prophet of the new social order, truly called by Lowell the First American, the advent of the people was fully justified. But to describe democratic polity in the sphere of government is no part of my motive. I have in mind the more subtle effects of democracy, its radiation in art, industry, education, and religion. Now one of the new ideas is the doctrine of labor as distinguished from the aristocratic doctrine of leisure. Blessed is he who has found his work spoke out Carlyle. But what is the nature of that work from which the ancient curse has been removed - work which is a tangible blessing in itself, a pleasure even as sleep and food? In truth a new industrialism is forming. Moreover a new sense of life itself is shaping among those whose perceptions are not obscured by power and luxury and a Maeterlinck is born to become the prophet of the humble There are about us, says Maeterlinck, in one of his recent essays, thous ands of poor creatures who have nothing of beauty in their lives; they come and go in obscurity, and we believe all is dead within them; and no one pays any heed. And then one day a simple word, an unexpected silence, a little tear that springs from the source of beauty itself, tells us they have found the means of raising aloft, in the shadow of their soul, an ideal a thousand times more beautiful than the most beautiful things their ears have ever heard or their eyes ever seen. 0, noble and pallid ideals of silence and shadow! It is you, above all, who soar direct to God! Where this thing is true, where the speech inclines to silence, where life is esoteric, of. Book Oration Democracy and Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book Oration Democracy and Education Classic Reprint written by Dr. Jeremiah E. Burke and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oration Democracy and Education Your Honor and Fellow Citizens: The Irish people among many beautiful legends have this: That the great O'Donoghue, though he died and was buried far from his native land, was brought back by angels to home and fatherland, there to rest in an unfrequented glen nearby his dear Killarney awaiting the time when, his country demanding his splendid services, he shall arise from the grave and lead his embattled hosts once more to victory. Strange and fantastic though this legend appears, it is nevertheless true. Our great ones lead us from the grave. The spirit of the past abides with the present and controls the destinies of the future. And in these stirring post-bellum days of restoration and readjustment, the American people must not confound reconstruction with revolution. We must be loyal to the traditions of the past. People have studied the outside of the body of democracy; they have hardly begun to know what makes its life, or upon what its good health depends. Democracy is on trial in the world, on a more colossal scale than ever before. Its friends per haps never faced more difficult problems. Neither have they ever had so much reason to hope for success. Book Culture Discipline and Democracy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Culture Discipline and Democracy Classic Reprint written by A. Duncan Yocum and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culture, Discipline and Democracy IF I had been writing wholly from the standpoint of edu cational tradition, the title of this book would have been Democracy through Culture and Discipline. For the first step taken toward democratic education was to ensure in telligent citizenship by making the culture and discipline, which in the past had been reserved for privileged social classes, accessible to the whole people through a system of free schools. Writing as I have done, wholly as an investi gator who records In as logical order as he can the results of his Inquiry, a truer title for my work as it reaches its comple tion would be Culture and Discipline through Direct Prep aration for Democracy. For from the standpoint of cul ture and discipline as distinct from democracy, I have been forced to see that for the majority of individuals who do not continue to lead the life of academic Specialists, no discipline can be lasting or culture continuing which is not closely related to every-day life. And to an education which is democratic only in its Opportunity, I have gradually come to add education which is democratic, on the one hand, in its ideals, its subject matter, its organization and its method, and on the other, in compulsion which demands not only that each individual Shall have through compulsory school at tendance the rudiments of academic knowledge, but, through the compulsion Of repetition, every detail of culture and dis cipline essential to usefulness to the community and the state. Book Fundamentals of Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fundamentals of Education Classic Reprint written by Boyd H. Bode and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fundamentals of Education The purpose of this volume is to interpret present day educational problems from the standpoint of pragmatic philosophy. The discussion is centered chiefly on two main topics; viz., the aims or ideals which should be dominant in education, and the nature of the mind or intelligence with which education has to deal. The book is written in the conviction that educational theory and practice have been vitiated by preconceptions which were historically inevitable but which are unjustifiable in the light of modern knowl edge. These preconceptions must be eliminated if education is to make its proper contribution towards the enrichment of life and towards making the world safe for democracy. The development during recent years of scientific method in the field of education has brought with it a comparative neglect of the more fundamental issues. For the time being this shift of emphasis towards scientific investigation was prob ably desirable. Its effect has been to place educational research on a permanent basis. But unless the study of detailed problems is properly correlated with theory, there is serious danger that education will simply be come more complicated, and perhaps more mechanical. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Democratic Ideal in Education IN our land there is to-day considerable discussion upon educational matters. Appeals are made sometimes to our reason, and sometimes to our prejudices, and considerable bitterness of feeling is aroused and displayed, and generally much pother is created upon matters that are only incidentally educational. Let us trust that out of this evil good may come. Let us hope that what is at present an interest produced artificially, and with much labour, may become perennial and natural. Let us seize this golden opportunity to make our people permanently interested in this fateful problem of national education, so that the popular apathy, which in the past has been our curse, may develop into a popular vigilance, without which no truly national system is possible. But popular vigilance needs popular intelligence. Until our people can be made to see the true inwardness of their own instinctive faith, until they can be made to realise what national training means, and to understand why we need a better system of education - not, indeed, to beat the German, but to beat the devil - only when these matters have become part of our common faith may we look for the regeneration of this land.
