Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is widespread agreement that schools should contribute to the moral development and character formation of their students. In fact, 80% of US states currently have mandates regarding character education. However, the pervasiveness of the support for moral and character education masks a high degree of controversy surrounding its meaning and methods. The purpose of this handbook is to supplant the prevalent ideological rhetoric of the field with a comprehensive, research-oriented volume that both describes the extensive changes that have occurred over the last fifteen years and points forward to the future. Now in its second edition, this book includes the latest applications of developmental and cognitive psychology to moral and character education from preschool to college settings, and much more.

Book Moral Education in School and Home

Download or read book Moral Education in School and Home written by J. O. Engleman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral Education in School and Home Though there is universal agreement that moral education is the supreme objective in public-school work, the literature dealing with this aspect of the work is not very extensive. Of the few books that have been written, the writer has not seen one that undertakes to analyze the possibilities for moral instruction or training in the everyday activities of the school. It seemed to the writer, therefore, that there is a distinct place for such a book in teachers' reading circles and in normal school and other courses for teacher-training. The writing of this book was undertaken, however, with a full appreciation of the difficulties involved in saying anything helpful to teachers or parents who are concerned with the problem of character-building in school and home. No claim is made for the discovery of any specifics, or any royal roads to the desired goal. Every child presents a new problem. Individual differences among children are so numerous that successful dealing with one is by no means a guarantee of success in dealing with another. Endless study, tact, sympathy, and charity are demanded of every teacher who would direct, guide, lead, or assist a child into the moral life which should be his. On the other hand, there are more elements of likeness than of difference among children. On the side of inheritance they all have instincts, impulses, and a psychophysical organism attuned to a world of stimuli to which they must respond. In a given school they find those stimuli in the teacher, their classmates, their books and lessons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Africa s Future Africa s Challenge

Download or read book Africa s Future Africa s Challenge written by Marito H. Garcia and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2008-01-18 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early childhood, from birth through school entry, was largely invisible worldwide as a policy concern for much of the twentieth century. Children, in the eyes of most countries, were 'appendages' of their parents or simply embedded in the larger family structure. The child did not emerge as a separate social entity until school age (typically six or seven). 'Africa's Future, Africa's Challenge: Early Childhood Care and Development in Sub-Saharan Africa' focuses on the 130 million children south of the Sahel in this 0-6 age group. This book, the first of its kind, presents a balanced collection of articles written by African and non-African authors ranging from field practitioners to academicians and from members of government organizations to those of nongovernmental and local organizations. 'Africa's Future, Africa's Challenge' compiles the latest data and viewpoints on the state of Sub-Saharan Africa's children. Topics covered include the rationale for investing in young children, policy trends in early childhood development (ECD), historical perspectives of ECD in Sub-Saharan Africa including indigenous approaches, new threats from HIV/AIDS, and the importance of fathers in children's lives. The book also addresses policy development and ECD implementation issues; presents the ECD programming experience in several countries, highlighting best practices and challenges; and evaluates the impact of ECD programs in a number of countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young people in America today face a crisis of character.Traditional role models continue to disappoint the public, fallingshort of expectations and fostering cynicism rather than idealism. As a result, many young people struggle to distinguish right fromwrong and seem indifferent to whether it matters. It clearlybecomes the task of parents and schools to re-engage the hearts andminds of our children in forming their own characters. In BuildingCharacter in Schools, Kevin Ryan and Karen Bohlin draw from nearlyfifty years of combined field experience to offer a practical guideto character education -- designed to help children to know thegood, love the good, and do the good. Ryan and Bohlin provide a blueprint for educators who wish totranslate a personal commitment to character education into aschoolwide vision and effort. They outline the principles andstrategies of effective character education and explain whatschools must do to teach students the habits and dispositions thatlead to responsible adulthood -- from developing curriculum thatreinforces good character development to strengthening links withparents.
