Book Education for Business Classic Reprint

Download or read book Education for Business Classic Reprint written by Leverett S. Lyon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education for Business This volume was prepared with the hope, expressed in the preface to the first edition, that it might be of service to general readers and to students in institutions giving teacher training. If the general reader had been the only reader contemplated, the clear expression of a point of view would have been the only matter of primary importance. But to make the book valuable to students, the evidence was laid out in some detail, conflicting attitudes were expressed, questions interpolated, and material otherwise introduced for the constant discussion and reaction of class work. These introductions into the skeleton of thought make it possible for the student to develop a view through his own thinking, but they constitute something of an interference to the reader who wishes to see quickly approach and conclusions only. There has therefore been added in this edition a final chapter which is something of a sketch of the book as a whole. It is hoped that this chapter may serve the general reader as a certification of viewpoint and the student as'a summary as well. As the title of the chapter indicates, there is also the belief that this summarized viewpoint may aid educators in applying the ideas of the book to practical situations. Book Business Training and Commercial Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book Business Training and Commercial Education Classic Reprint written by Glen Levin Swiggett and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Business Training and Commercial Education This is due in a large measure to the fact that business training came as a late entrant to high school and college. The period of readjustment in accord with the established academic procedure in respect to admissions and graduations was and is coincident with a period of industrial and commercial expansion, the course of which has not always been under economic control. Sensing the economic gain to ensue through the correlation of training for and actual conduct of business, business educators and business men have endeavored in larger numbers and throughout a larger territory than ever before to obtain a program of coordinated educational opportunity and business need Avhich would give to business a natural movement of supply frpm the schools of bojs and girls, Tmeirand women, efficiently trained for the entafging delfmTfe and specific tasks of business. The motive of this approach has been cordial but not always timely, and has sometimes been ill-advised. Always the latter when the fundamental purpose of the public schools in a democracy Iras not been kept clearly a guiding principle in the establishment of special training courses. The division of labor in the field of distribution has not always been apparent as in that of production. The unit cost in marketing involves factors yet intangible. It is therefore difficult, involving uncertainty and change, to functionalize business training courses the major, nay the sole, purpose of which is to train for specific tasks of business. Experimentation, therefore, in this special field of educational endeavor is more evident in vocational business training than in the broader and more general aspects of liberal commercial education. And this is rightly so. We live in an economic era. Inter and intra national affairs are largely determined by economic advantages, and these are in a large degree conditioned by the magnitude of scale and measure of efficiency in management of industry and commerce. The need of constantly improved methods for increased production and salvage, in transportation, marketing, and financing, no matter in what field of development, has never been more apparent. Nor has there ever been a greater need for trained labor, whether of head or hand. The consciousness of this need has given to business education a position of commanding interest in business as well as in education. Commercial organizations. National, State, and local, place increasing emphasis on training and education for business and commerce. Programs in training for s)ecial types of business service similar in purpose and procedure to that of the American Institute of Banking have been developed and extended by other organized business service groups, for example, the National Association of Credit Men has planned a course of study to be offered by cooperative arrangement in the larger urban universities. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Higher Education as a Training for Business Few facts in education are more striking of late years than the growth in attendance at colleges and universities. The rate of this growth considerably exceeds that of the population of the country as a whole. A concomitant fact 15 the comparatively small number of college students who are seeking the learned professions. The great mass of the young men in college after graduation will be connected with some form of business. There are those who think that the present situation is a mistake; that young men are wasting their time, so far as a business career is concerned, by spending years in obtaining a college course. Is this a correct View of the situation? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Business Education and Accountancy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Business Education and Accountancy Classic Reprint written by Charles Waldo Haskins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Business Education and Accountancy This volume has been prepared not alone as a memorial to Mr. Haskins. Better warrant is found in the fact that it represents the most advanced thought of those not actively engaged in the teach ing profession on the subject of business training and on the possibility of raising high professional standards in what may be called business special ties. And if we are to draw conclusions from his published expressions, we find, clearly recognized, at least three branches of professional serviee in business which have no adequate educational sup port. The first of these is Accountancy - already recognized by the laws of five American States. The second business profession indicated is Finance - including banking, insurance, and other well established and clearly defined financial specialties. The third is Business Administration. As pointed out by Mr. Haskins, education has not kept pace with the demands of the time. In many instances scientific inquiry is wholly wanting and professional education has no literary basis of which to avail itself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Views on Business Education The field of collegiate education for business has, in recent years, probably been studied, evaluated, and reflected upon more than any Other segment of our system of higher education. This sort of analysis has been a continuing thing over many years with respect to the American Association of Collegiate Schools of Busi ness.1 It has been done effectively and with constructive rigor by the business community.2 And finally, the two studies completed in 1959 for the Carnegie Foundation and the Ford Foundation have provided the latest impetus for this continuing reevaluation of the field.3 All in all the decade of the fifties was an interesting one for those who have been participants in the work of the field being studied. As the published Ford and Carnegie studies became available they were distributed widely to faculty members in the field of business administration. A great many schools used these studies as a further peg upon which to base a continuing reexamination of their own purposes and performance. Download or read book College Training and the Business Man Classic Reprint written by Charles Franklin Thwing and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Training and the Business Man For almost three hundred years the American college has been seeking to serve the higher interests of American life. It has been, and still is, supposed to bear a special relation of preparation for what are known as the learned professions. Bank ing, transportation, insurance represent three great labors to which men in increas ing numbers and of greater power have in recent years been giving themselves. The purpose of the following pages is to present the advantage which these three vocations, which no one calls learned, and which the work of general administration, may receive from the college. The purpose is in a way narrow; but I venture to hope that in trying to gain it I have succeeded in illustrating some advantages which the col lege may give to man as man. For, the great human worth of the college is incom parably superior to its worth in training etfi cient administrators. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching as a Business: Four Addresses My earliest ideas of art are connected with a picture in the advertising columns of the weekly newspaper. It represented two men: one lean and lank and decrepit, walking about to save funeral expenses, and labelled "Before taking"; the other blooming with full vigor of manhood, and labelled "After taking." Dr. Andrews has shown you the teacher "before taking"; I am to show you the other one. A careful compilation of the characteristics ascribed to the ideal teacher in previous addresses upon the subject shows that he must be affable, benignant, courteous, decorous, exact, fervent, genteel, humorous, immaculate, judicious, keen, lenient, modest, neat, orderly, prompt, quiet, robust, scholarly, tranquil, ubiquitous, vigilant, wary, 'xemplary, youthful, and zealous. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Business and Education Founder's day address, delivered at Girard College, Philadelphia, May 20, 1905. IT has been well said that when Stephen Girard conceived this notable institution, the benefaction was more than a philanthropy, it was a precedent. He was the first man of great wealth to devote a vast fortune to an educational idea. We cannot measure the influence that act had. The example may have been of as great good in its effect upon the minds of other men of wealth, as has been the value of the great benefaction itself. Certain it is that the precedent then made was the beginning of a long and ever increasing list of educational gifts. That list has come to be of such proportions that to - day the giving Of a million dollars to an institution of learning excites little more than the passing comment of the hour. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Empire of Business T IS well that young men should begin at the I beginning and occupy the most subordinate positions. Many of the leading business men of Pittsburg had a serious responsibility thrust upon them at the very threshold Of their career. They were introduced to the broom, and spent the first hours of their business lives sweeping out the office. I notice we have janitors and janitresses now in offices, and our young men unfortunately miss that salutary branch of a business education. But if by Chance the professional sweeper is absent any morn ing the boy who has the genius of the future partner in him will not hesitate to try his hand at the broom. The other day a fond fashionable mother in Michigan asked a young man Whether he had ever seen a young lady sweep in a room so grandly as her Priscilla. He said no, he never had, and the mother was gratified beyond measure, but then said he, after a pause, What I should like to see her do is sweep out a room. It does not hurt the newest comer to sweep. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
