Book English Education in India 1715 1835

Download or read book English Education in India 1715 1835 written by Rajesh Kochhar and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book identifies and describes the first stage in the advent and growth of English education in India. The first schools in India were the charity schools, asylums and orphanages opened under the auspices of the Church of England for religious instruction, training and care of ‘half-caste’ or mixed-race children, the progeny of Protestant fathers from Indian women. It examines the influence of the ‘half-caste’ community and the missionaries on the growing Indian demand for English education and opportunities for employment. The well-entrenched scenarios on the pre-history of Hindoo College Calcutta are re-examined in the light of new evidence discussed here for the first time. The book further analyses the shifts in the educational policies by the British colonial administrators and the interventions by the likes of Trevelyan, Macaulay and Bentinck. Detailed and insightful, this volume will be of great interest to students and researchers of history, literature, postcolonial studies, cultural studies, colonial expansion, and South Asian studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, titled “Viksit Bharat 2047: Infrastructure. Innovation. Inclusion.” reviews how India has progressed to a globally recognized and respected position over the last ten years, more specifically over the last five years. The key highlight of the book is an espousal of how India is poised to transform itself as Viksit Bharat by 2047, India’s 100th year of independence. The book presents, in brief, certain success stories in various economic, industrial, and social sectors that India has notched up over these years. It also presents a few futuristic transformational pathways. This demonstrates, in a compelling manner, how effective public policy and governance has caused a paradigm shift in how India has started viewing itself and how the world has started viewing India. India’s future is likely to be dramatically more elevated than even staunch India optimists may imagine. The key is an impactful combination of visionary goal setting, objective self-belief, and competency building. This book will inspire policy makers, academicians, business leaders, students and public to believe in and work for Viksit Bharat. .

Book Medical Education in Western India

Download or read book Medical Education in Western India written by Sunil Pandya and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Medical knowledge is not communicable to the natives of this country.” With these words, James McAdam, Secretary of the Medical Board of Bombay, sounded the death-knell in 1832 of the pioneering medical school set up in Bombay by Governor Mountstuart Elphinstone. Sir Robert Grant, appointed Governor of Bombay in 1834, disagreed, however. He aimed at ‘the general improvement of medical and surgical science and practice among the native practitioners’. With Dr Charles Morehead, he created a medical college superior to those in Calcutta, and Madras. Parsi philanthropist Sir Jamsetjee Jejeebhoy single-handedly donated an entire hospital to complement this college. Graduates from these institutions, trained in scientific medicine of the highest standards, went on to serve their fellow countrymen with distinction. This book narrates how against great odds, Grant Medical College went on to rival medical colleges in Europe and America, and Dr Morehead was invited to help improve medical education at the University of London.

Book excerpt: A great American sport and Native American history come together in this true story for middle grade readers about how Jim Thorpe and Pop Warner created the legendary Carlisle Indians football team, from New York Times bestselling author and Newbery Award recipient Steve Sheinkin. “Sheinkin has made a career of finding extraordinary stories in American history.” —The New York Times Book Review A Boston Globe-Horn Book Nonfiction Honor Book A New York Times Notable Children's Book A Washington Post Best Book Undefeated: Jim Thorpe and the Carlisle Indian School Football Team is an astonishing underdog sports story—and more. It’s an unflinching look at the U.S. government’s violent persecution of Native Americans and the school that was designed to erase Indian cultures. Expertly told by three-time National Book Award finalist Steve Sheinkin, it’s the story of a group of young men who came together at that school, the overwhelming obstacles they faced both on and off the field, and their absolute refusal to accept defeat. Jim Thorpe: Super athlete, Olympic gold medalist, Native American Pop Warner: Indomitable coach, football mastermind, Ivy League grad Before these men became legends, they met in 1907 at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania, where they forged one of the winningest teams in American football history. Called "the team that invented football," they took on the best opponents of their day, defeating much more privileged schools such as Harvard and the Army in a series of breathtakingly close calls, genius plays, and bone-crushing hard work. This thoroughly-researched and documented book can be worked into multiple aspects of the common core curriculum. “Along with Thorpe's fascinating personal story, Sheinkin offers a thought-provoking narrative about the evolution of football and the development of boarding schools such as the Carlisle Indian School.” —The Washington Post Also by Steve Sheinkin: Bomb: The Race to Build—and Steal—the World's Most Dangerous Weapon The Notorious Benedict Arnold: A True Story of Adventure, Heroism & Treachery Most Dangerous: Daniel Ellsberg and the Secret History of the Vietnam War The Port Chicago 50: Disaster, Mutiny, and the Fight for Civil Rights Which Way to the Wild West?: Everything Your Schoolbooks Didn't Tell You About Westward Expansion King George: What Was His Problem?: Everything Your Schoolbooks Didn't Tell You About the American Revolution Two Miserable Presidents: Everything Your Schoolbooks Didn't Tell You About the Civil War Born to Fly: The First Women's Air Race Across America
