Book Making social policy work

Download or read book Making social policy work written by John Hills and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social policy is now central to political debate in Britain. What has been achieved by efforts to improve services and reduce poverty? What is needed to deliver more effective and popular services to all and increase social justice? How can we make social policy work? These are some of the questions discussed in this new and wide-ranging collection of essays by a distinguished panel of leading social policy academics. The book covers key issues in contemporary social policy, particularly concentrating on recent changes. It examines the history and goals of social policy as well as its delivery, focusing in turn on the family and the state, schools, higher education, healthcare, social care, communities and housing. Redistribution is also examined, exploring child poverty, pension reform and resources for welfare. The essays in this collection have been specially written to honour the 70th birthday of Howard Glennerster whose pioneering work has been concerned not only with the theoretical, historical and political foundations of social policies but, crucially, with how they work in practice. It is a collection of primary importance for those working in and interested in policy and politics in a wide variety of fields and for students of social policy, public policy and the public sector.

Book Building A Learning Nation

Download or read book Building A Learning Nation written by Chris Pratt and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Building a Learning Nation, Chris Pratt and Allison Chin use powerful evidence to expose serious fault lines in the English learning and education system. The authors show that the result of a thirty-year political consensus on education has been growing child mental ill-health, high levels of educational underachievement, major skill shortages, and a crisis in the retention and recruitment of teachers. Increasing numbers of children leading dysfunctional home lives, coupled with ineffective government education and skills policies over decades, are identified as the principal causes. The book explains how these problems make a defining contribution to the country's sluggish economic performance and deep social divisions. Above all else, Building a Learning National provides a compelling case for change. Unlike other critiques of contemporary education it provides a well thought out, workable alternative: promoting lifelong learning for all; tackling underachievement; supporting families; radically changing the conditions within which schools operate; and developing the skills the nation needs.

Book The Welfare State We re In

Download or read book The Welfare State We re In written by James Bartholomew and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The welfare state is one of Britain's crowning achievements. Or is it? In this seminal book, now studied in universities in Britain and elsewhere, James Bartholomew advances the sacrilegious argument that, however well meaning its founders, the welfare state has done more harm than good. He argues that far from being the socialist utopia the post-war generation dreamed of, the welfare state has led to avoidable deaths in the NHS, falling standards in schools, permanent mass unemployment and many other unintended consequences. At a deeper level, he contends that the welfare state has caused millions to live deprived and even depraved lives, undermining the very decency and kindness which first inspired it. This landmark book changed the way many people think about the welfare state. It played a major role in the political debate that led to recent reforms. Now with a new introduction by the author assessing the value of these reforms, this classic text still shocks with the power of its arguments and the weight of its supporting evidence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remit of this report is to review recommendations for uprating the minimum wage; review the level for 16-17 year olds; and consider the operation of the accommodation offset and the treatments of benefits-in-kind. It concludes that for 2006 it is appropriate to continue to increase the minimum wage rate above the rise in average earnings. The recommended rate would be £5.35 for adults, £4.45 youth development rate and £3.30 for 16-17 year olds. A full review of apprenticeship exemptions is recommended. It is also recommended that neither childcare vouchers nor salary sacrifice schemes should count towards the National Minimum Wage. The accommodation offset should continue but there should be clearer guidance and legislation to prevent employers using the device of a separate accommodation company.

Book Reconceptualising Lifelong Learning

Download or read book Reconceptualising Lifelong Learning written by Sue Jackson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-05-10 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arising from work by the Gender and Lifelong Learning Group of the Gender and Education Association, this book presents reconceptualisations of lifelong learning. It argues that the current field of lifelong learning is based on certain hidden values and assumptions and examines the mechanisms by which exclusionary discourses and practices are reproduced and maintained. The book opens up ways of conceptualising learning that takes into account multiple and shifting formations of learners from different social contexts. The authors broaden what counts as learning and who counts as a learner, offering different understandings of lifelong learning that are able to include currently marginalised values and principles. Organised in four sections the book looks at: reclaiming - it draws on feminist and post-structural conceptual frameworks to create a critical analysis of the current 'field' of lifelong learning retelling - it tells the tales of different multi-positions in lifelong learning revisioning - it moves from narrative to analysis and the authors present their revisioning of learning which provide the tools to reconceptualise the field of lifelong learning reconstructing - it furthers the discussion to outline new approaches to and practices in lifelong learning.
