Download or read book Growing Up Modern written by Bruce Fuller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11-26 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern state – First and Third Worlds alike – pushes tirelessly to expand mass education and to deepen the schools’ effect upon children. First published in 1991, Growing-Up Modern explores why, how, and with what actual effects state actors so vehemently pursue this dual political agenda. Bruce Fuller first delves into the motivations held by politicians, education bureaucrats and civic elites as they earnestly seek to spread schooling to younger children, older adults and previously disenfranchised groups. Fuller argues that the school provides an institutional stage on which political actors signal their ideals and the coming of greater modernity; broadening membership in the polity, promising mass opportunity in the wage sector, intensifying modern (bureaucratic) forms of school management, and deepening a presumed commitment to the child’s individual development. Fuller advances a theory of the ‘fragile state’ where Western political expectations and organisations are placed within pluralistic Third World settings, using southern Africa as an example of the dilemmas faced by the central state.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a valuable and fascinating book valuable because of the findings it presents, fascinating because of the way it presents them. The subject of Becoming Modern is the modernization process in six developing nations (Argentina, Chile, India, Israel, Nigeria, and Bangladesh). The method is to survey about a thousand men, aged 20-30, in each of these lands. The goal is to demonstrate that a modern man, identifiable by his attitudes toward different aspects of life, does indeed exist, and to find out what factors encourage the transformation from traditional to modern. -The New Leader

Book The Measurement of Modernism

Download or read book The Measurement of Modernism written by Joseph A. Kahl and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1974-06-01 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most interesting questions that can be raised about the twentieth century world concerns the degree to which industrialization created a common culture for all peoples. Reported here are the results of an empirical investigation designed to produce instruments to measure those personal values that have been central variables in the theory of modernization of societies. The purpose of Joseph Kahl’s research is primarily methodological: to advance the description and measurement of those value orientations used by men to organize their occupational careers. It seeks to delineate and measure a set of values that represents a “modern” view of work and life. The working laboratory was Brazil and Mexico, two countries undergoing rapid industrialization. More than six hundred men in Brazil and more than seven hundred in Mexico responded to questionnaires. In addition, over twenty-five men in each country were asked to sit beside a tape recorder and talk freely of their worldviews. The respondents were divided between inhabitants of the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Mexico City and those who lived in provincial towns of fewer than ten thousand inhabitants. The samples included manual and nonmanual employees. The results showed that the main variable predicting whether or not a man would tend toward modernism was his social-class position. Middle-class men were much more modern in outlook than working-class men. Residence in a metropolis rather than in a small town also increased modernism, though to a lesser extent. Differences between Brazil and Mexico (and, indeed, the United States) were found to be surprisingly small, of considerably less weight than position in the social structure in predicting value orientations. The author addresses himself primarily to sociologists and their students who are themselves studying aspects of socio-economic development. His findings, however, cannot fail to be of interest and benefit to social scientists of various disciplines and to all who are concerned with the process of development—planners at the national and local levels, demographers, and businesspeople.

Book Modernity in India

Download or read book Modernity in India written by Renu Vinod and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces a sociological understanding of the emergence of modernity in India and its ramifications on society, economy, and polity. It outlines the main features and context of modernity, as described in classical and later texts of modernity. The essays examine the transformation of Indian society as a consequence of the British colonial encounter resulting in social, economic, and political interventions. It also delineates the Indian context by defining the term community, and its close association with caste and religion, and subsequently examines the challenges in building a pan-Indian or national consciousness with a sense of ‘we-ness’ or common identity. Most importantly, the book also studies the politics of government formation after independence, and the role of dominant castes and classes in gaining power at the Centre. The book concludes with an outline of the definitions and historical practices of social exclusion in India, their contemporary configurations, the image of a socially, economically, and politically exclusive Indian modernity that poses challenges to the Indian state and civil society on account of the exclusion of multiple groups. This book would be useful to the students, researchers and teachers of sociology, women and gender studies, history, economics, political science, and other interdisciplinary courses in social sciences. The book will also be valuable reading for those interested in South Asian studies, especially post-colonial contemporary Indian society.

Book Contemporary Issues in Education

Download or read book Contemporary Issues in Education written by David Seth Preston and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2005 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the warm reception given to The Idea of Education, a volume of papers in this same Rodopi Series, a second conference around similar themes was held at Oxford University and this book is the result. This edited book provides the reader with a fairly representative, coherent and cohesive statement of the 2003 Oxford conference. Quoting the Chancellor of Paris University with regretting that "in the old days ... lectures were more frequent ... but now the time taken for lectures is being spent in meeting and discussions" our keynote Frank McMahon made the profound observation that some of the issues around education have been with us for a surprisingly long time. Notwithstanding the longevity of some questions concerning education, this book details and examines contemporary educational practice and theory and as such it is a very important work.
