Download or read book Special Educational Provision in the Context of Inclusion written by Janice Wearmouth and published by David Fulton Publishers. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text traces the development of special educational provision and goes on to concentrate on some of the key issues relevant to professionals currently working in the field. It looks at the recent drive towards inclusion and the implication this has for schools. In the present market-oriented context in education, there are a number of dilemmas facing schools that attempt to include all pupils and at the same time respond to the current focus on academic achievement in a national climate of competition and accountability. The book offers practical examples of ways to resolve these dilemmas at the level of the LEA, the school, the classroom and the individual child. Part One gives an overview of special and inclusive education, current thinking around issues related to equal opportunities, and how this affects schools. It also illustrates how one Local Education Authority has tried to promote a policy of inclusion in its schools. Part Two includes a discussion of the challenges facing teachers in schools who attempt to put current national policies related to inclusion into practice and provides practical examples of whole-school and classroom initiatives to support the learning of groups of pupils and individuals within them. Included are chapters on professional development for teachers of special educational needs, classroom strategies for teacher and pupil support teachers and advice on differentiation, OFSTED and inclusive schools, the SENCO in the secondary school, and equal opportunities for all. This book will appeal to all teachers, SENCOs, head teachers and governors in every sector of the education system, parents, academics and course members on teachers' continuing professional development courses.
Download or read book Childhood Transformed written by Eric Hopkins and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Childhood Transformed provides a pioneering study of the remarkable shift in the nature of working-class childhood in the nineteenth century from lives dominated by work to lives centered around school. The author argues that this change was accompanied by substantial improvements for many in the home environment, in health and nutrition, and in leisure opportunities. The book breaks new ground in providing a wide-ranging survey of different aspects of childhood in the Victorian period, the early chapters examining life at work in agriculture and industry, in the home and elsewhere, while the later chapters discuss the coming of compulsory education, together with changes in the home and in leisure activities. A separate section of the book is devoted to the treatment of deprived children, those in and out of the workhouse, on the streets, and also in prison, industrial schools and reformatories. Offering a fresh and more focused approach to the history of working-class children, this book should be of interest to all lecturers and students of nineteenth-century social history.

Download or read book Britain 1846 1964 written by Martin Roberts and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to explain how Britain's circumstances changed between 1846 - 1964: Britain in 1846 was by far the richest nation in the world. In 1964, Britain was, comparatively, much less rich than the USA and, though amongst the world's richest nations, was losing ground to Japan and to Western Europe. Because of her wealth and her navy, Britain in 1846 was the most powerful nation in the world. Britain in 1964 was dwarfed by the superpowers of the USA and the USSR. The British Empire of the 1840s refelcted Britain's power. By 1964 the Empire was collapsing. Only one in five men (and no women) could vote in the Britain of 1840s. By 1964 Britain was fully democratic, with all adults entitled to vote. In a period of a little over a century, these were some of the changes to which Britain had to adapt. It was a period that marked a substantial fall in Britain's comparative power and prosperity in the world.

Download or read book A History of the Western Educational Experience written by Gerald L. Gutek and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive volume identifies and analyzes the significant ideas and institutions that shaped the Western educational heritage. The author examines how worldwide events have impacted education in Europe, North America, and beyond. The third edition incorporates fresh material about the ancient world, European exploration and colonization of North America and India, as well as updated chapters on education in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Russia. This edition has an expanded treatment of Carl Jung, a new section on Margaret Naumburg and her Walden School, and enhanced analysis of many other theorists. It concludes with broadened coverage of nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first century American education, including many educators new to the third edition. Each chapter contains a new feature: Reflection, Discussion, and Research. From Plato and Aristotle to John Dewey, leading educators raised perennial concepts about education and truth, meaning, and value that remain relevant today. In the progression from antiquity to the present, some issues are marked by change and others by continuity—all of which are important to consider, discuss, and research further.
