They investigated what cultures laid the foundations for the loss that we are experiencing from modernization, and how we can learn from this loss. The goals of the agenda are: (1) to focus the attention of arts educators, researchers, and the broader community on basic issues in arts education that can improve teaching and learning in the arts; (2) to identify what arts educators view as priorities, given limited resources; (3) to provide a conceptual framework and overall philosophy for inquiry in the field of arts education, as other disciplines are doing with their respective research agendas; and (4) to connect theory and practice, and to make research an agent of improvement in teaching and learning. The agenda was developed to articulate the many unanswered questions in three main areas of arts education: (1) curriculum and instruction; (2) assessment and evaluation; and (3) teacher education and preparation. The document consists of five parts plus notes, a bibliography, and an appendix of conference participants. The first section is an introduction of this field generated document, discussing trends in U.S. education that influence arts education. The second chapter on curriculum and instruction discusses what should be taught and how. The third chapter is on assessment, and the fourth on teacher education and preparation. Due to an increasing automatization (robotic manufacturing), the character of labor and work in general will change dramatically in the near future. This will be the case not only in the western countries, but also in the larger emerging economies in Asia, for example China and India. While societal environments, economy and the character of labor are increasingly in a process of dramatic changes, the educational systems and the leading principles of research about labor and employment are not changing adequately. Cross-disciplinary (inter-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary) thinking and learning is not the main focus of our educational systems. Consequently, the systems of academic research follow and apply disciplinary or even sub-disciplinary strategies, avoiding cross-disciplinary research approaches, and not supporting inter-disciplinary academic career models. This book introduces such strategic models to better prepare the next generation of workers for the new knowledge economy, and the future of democratic societies.

Raphael Vella is a Senior Lecturer in Art Education at the Faculty of Education, University of Malta. He is also actively involved in the curation of international and Maltese exhibitions and cultural events, and in recent years he initiated projects such as Divergent Thinkers (aimed at creating a platform for emerging artists based in Malta) and the Valletta International Visual Arts festival (VIVA). He is also a practising artist, having shown his work in many contexts, including Malta, Venice, Warsaw, Tokyo, Reims, Buenos Aires, Nicosia and Oxford.
