Book excerpt: This early work by Edgar Wallace was originally published in 1924 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'More Educated Evans' is the first novel in the 'Evans' series and is a fun tale of horse racing and a loveable Cockney hero. Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace was born in London, England in 1875. He received his early education at St. Peter's School and the Board School, but after a frenetic teens involving a rash engagement and frequently changing employment circumstances, Wallace went into the military. He served in the Royal West Kent Regiment in England and then as part of the Medical Staff Corps stationed in South Africa. Whilst in the Balkans covering the Russo-Japanese War, Wallace found the inspiration for The Four Just Men, published in 1905. Over the rest of his life, Wallace produced some 173 books and wrote 17 plays. These were largely adventure narratives with elements of crime or mystery, and usually combined a bombastic sensationalism with hammy violence.

Book excerpt: It was when an excited and vengeful client demanded what the so-and-so and such a thing Mr. Evans meant by sending out three selections for one race, that the educated man laid down his system of ethics."Tippin'," he said, "is ta'tics. You start out to do one thing an' do another. Bettin's a battle. You got to change your plans the same as the celebrated Napoleon Bonaparte, him that was killed in the Battle of Waterloo."This philosophy he impressed upon a Miss Casey, with disastrous effects. As to Miss Casey...To sit beside a beautiful lady in the pit of the Lyceum is indeed a privilege. To feel her small hand steal into yours in the excitement and emotion occasioned by Miss Frederick's acting, is thrilling. Educated Evans had both these experiences. The lady was young. Her face was as fresh and as sweet as a pansy. She had red lips and large grey eyes ... presently to be blinded with hot tears at the pitiable plight of Madame X.Evans returned the grip of her hand and reeled."Whatever will you think of me?" she asked penitently as they came out of the theatre."My opinion of you," said Mr. Evans passionately, "is the same as the well-known Henry the Eighth had for the far-famed Joan of Arc.""Oh, go on!" said the delighted Miss Casey. They went to a famous corner shop café and Evans blew a dollar on coffee and doughnuts and a box of chocolate tied up with blue ribbon-which was Miss Casey's favourite colour.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the white race it is almost impossible to comprehend what it took to lift blacks from the state of brutal slavery to their rightful place in society. Indeed, we are still grappling with that problem today. Starting from scratch has new meaning when you look at the beginnings of Booker T. Washington and Emmanuel and Tinny McDuffie, the founders of the Laurinburg Normal and Industrial Institute in 1904. How far they came has to be measured against where they began. Emmanuel McDuffie, the son of "none," became the symbolic father of many. He did not flee to the relative safety of the North after the war but plunged deeper into the divided and often dangerous South. He was determined to build a place where he, his family, and his race could stand and thrive. This 119-year history of the oldest private black prep school in the United States comes alive through extensive interviews and records now uncovered for the first time. Accounts of Jazz musician Dizzy Gillespie and NBA Hall of Famers Sam Jones and Charlie Scott, among many distinguished graduates and faculty members, paint a vivid picture. Ranked sixth nationwide among high schools in producing the most NBA players, Laurinburg Institute also sent more than 60 players to Division I college basketball teams all across the county. At least 50,000 students built a new world based on the firm foundation of Laurinburg Institute and four generations of the McDuffie family.
