El abandono escolar o educativo trae consigo un alto costo social y personal, muchas veces dirigiendo las vidas de jóvenes hacia una vida adulta precaria con alta vulnerabilidad social y económica.En respuesta surge la Educación Alternativa, y en particular las Escuelas de Segunda Oportunidad, que proporcionan una educación creativa con base democrática para cultivar una Cultura de paz; que atiende los rezagos académicos que puedan presentar los jóvenes; promueve la autonomía y, sobre todo, atiende el aspecto socio-educativo del joven. Las escuelas deberían contar con un profesorado con las herramientas, conocimiento y creatividad apropiadas para esta modalidad de enseñanza, sin embargo, son pocas las universidades que ofrecen esta formación.El libro presenta un plan de estudios para los programas de preparación de docentes, con el fin de formar a docentes especializados en la Educación Alternativa. En el contexto real de las escuelas alternativas en Puerto Rico, el libro recoge las voces de docentes, directores y patronos, lideres educativos, expertos en currículo y gestores de políticas públicas sobre la Educación Alternativa y el papel de sus docentes.El libro invita a docentes, administradores, profesores, psicólogos y profesionales de la Educación y Salud a mirar hacia la preparación de docentes como la llave para crear experiencias de genuino valor para jóvenes en riesgo de exclusión social que ya han experimentado grandes decepciones en el sistema educativo tradicional.
