Book Desire and Human Flourishing

Download or read book Desire and Human Flourishing written by Magdalena Bosch and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-23 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the concept of desire as a positive factor in human growth and flourishing. All human decision-making is preceded by some kind of desire, and we act upon desires by either rejecting or following them. It argues that our views on and expressions of desire in various facets of life and through time have differed according to how human beings are taught to desire. Therefore, the concept has tremendous potential to affect human beings positively and to enable personal growth. Though excellent research has been done on the concepts of flourishing, character education and positive psychology, no other work has linked the concept of desire to all of these topics. Featuring key references, explanations of central concepts, and significant practical applications of desire to various fields of human thought and action, the book will be of interest to students and researchers in the fields of positive psychology, positive education, moral philosophy, and virtue ethics.

Download or read book The Moderns written by Paul Julian Smith and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2000 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a radically new account of the rich and varied culture of contemporary Spain. It focuses on three intellectuals who chronicle contemporary life (including journalist Francisco Umbral); three filmmakers who engage with the many nationalisms of the Spanish state (Victor Erice,Bigas Luna, and Julio Medem); and three crucial topics that are expressed in many media (the replaying of history, the rise and fall of the city, and the practice of everyday life). Ranging from the ethnographic photography of Cristina Garcia Rodero to the high tech architecture of SantiagoCalatrava and from the hyperrealist painting of Antonio Lopez to the neo-flamenco dance of Joaquin Cortes, this book is also the first to draw on theorists of the intellectual field, the production of space, and the arts of bricolage (Pierre Bourdieu, Henri Lefebvre, and Michel de Certeau). Refutingthe charge that contemporary Spanish culture is trivial or superficial, this book argues that it is fully engaged in the aesthetic and historical project of modernity.

Download or read book Democracia ciudadan a y educaci n written by José María Rosales and published by Ediciones AKAL. This book was released on 2009-02-16 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Download or read book Dieter Misgeld written by Hossein Mesbahian and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-17 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Dieter Misgeld taught Philosophy of Education at the University of Toronto for over 30 years. His retirement lent occasion for a series of lengthy interviews, ranging from his years in Heidelberg where he studied philosophy in its history, based on philosophical hermeneutics with Gadamer, participated in debates about Hegel with Heidegger, and saw Habermas begin his career; to his interest in Richard Rorty, encounter with Buddhism, and reflections on global politics and the new security regime. With Dieter Misgeld we see the seductions of philosophy when studied among this centuries’ greatest practitioners. What emerges in the book is a pedagogy of hope based on Misgeld’s own utopian aspirations, emancipatory politics, and caution about philosophy – Misgeld argues that philosophy is no longer helpful for any project of social and political change, that the problems of the world today are political rather than philosophical. Thus, it is political engagement rather than philosophical reflection that is called for. Considering the stature of his teachers and the depth of his own philosophical capabilities, his insistence on the limitations of philosophy compels us to reflect on our own assumptions about the promise of philosophy. What emerges is the grounding of thought in the personal character of philosophical reflection, and the drama of ideas as they unfold throughout a lifetime.
