Esos intentos dieron, más bien, lugar a la resistencia de los pueblos originarios, desde un proceso de lucha por sus derechos; lucha que aún no ha terminado. Uno de ellos era el derecho a la educación que finalmente pudo darse en su propia lengua y hacia la integración intercultural con la sociedad dominante. Este estudio analiza la Educación Bilingüe Intercultural (EIB) desde su reconocimiento oficial en el Ecuador (1989) hasta el año 2007, donde iniciará una nueva etapa para el país, en general, y para la educación de los pueblos indígenas, en particular. En esta investigación, además de la construcción teórica y metodológica, se realiza una contextualización de la EIB y una breve revisión histórica de las propuestas de educación para los pueblos indígenas. Se estudian los fundamentos de la EIB, su carácter curricular, su carácter político, la revitalización de las lenguas indígenas y la crítica a la educación formal que directa y tácitamente implicó la existencia de la EIB. También se analiza la EIB desde las concepciones teóricas del currículo manejadas por la pedagogía crítica y poscrítica para finalmente arribar a las conclusiones.

Even as indigenous people were excluded from civic life, images of them proliferated in speeches, periodicals, and artworks during Ecuador’s long process of nation formation.
