Book Eduard Strauss The Third Man of the Strauss Family

Download or read book Eduard Strauss The Third Man of the Strauss Family written by Leigh Bailey and published by Hollitzer Wissenschaftsverlag. This book was released on 2017-03-17 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eduard Strauss I (1835–1916), the youngest of the three Strauss brothers – and hence the 'third man' of the family, has always been overshadowed by his siblings Johann II and Josef. However, he was the longest lived and most widely travelled of the three and, as sole conductor and manager of the Strauss Orchestra for thirty years, brought authentic performances of his family's music to audiences in hundreds of towns and cities in Europe and North America. At home in Vienna he made an invaluable contribution to the city's musical and cultural life, while having at the same time to cope with continual tensions and problems within the Strauss family.

Book The Strauss Dynasty and Habsburg Vienna

Download or read book The Strauss Dynasty and Habsburg Vienna written by David Wyn Jones and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-29 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The music of the Strauss family – Johann and his three sons, Johann, Josef and Eduard – enjoys enormous popular appeal. Yet existing biographies have failed to do justice to the family's true significance in nineteenth and early twentieth-century musical history. David Wyn Jones addresses this deficiency, engagingly showing that – from Johann's first engagements in the mid-1820s to the death of Eduard in 1916 – the music making of the family was at the centre of Habsburg Viennese society as it moved between dance hall, concert hall and theatre. The Strauss industry at its height was, he demonstrates, greater than any one of the individuals, with serious personal and domestic consequences including affairs, illness, rivalry and fraud. This zesty biography, spanning over a hundred years of history, brings the dynasty brilliantly to life across a large canvas as it offers fresh and revealing insights into the cultural life of Vienna as a whole.

Book An Afghan Prince in Victorian England

Download or read book An Afghan Prince in Victorian England written by R.D. McChesney and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-25 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1894 Great Britain invited 'Abd al-Rahman Khan, the amir of Afghanistan, to England for a state visit. Then at the height of its imperial might, Britain sought to strengthen ties with the strategically important Afghanistan, which shared a long frontier, not yet a border, with British India. The amir's aim for the visit was to secure permission for an Afghan legation (embassy) in London while the British, unaware of this goal, hoped to overawe the amir with displays of military and industrial might as well as performances to show the strength and unity of British civil society. The amir, citing illness, ultimately declined the invitation but, in a calculated snub, sent his second son, Prince Nasr Allah Khan, in his place. This book narrates the events of the prince's mission in a number of revealing ways. Using both British and Afghan sources, including the journal of a senior member of the Afghan contingent, McChesney places the visit in its international and historical context and analyzes the internal dynamics of the prince's delegation, the seventy members of whom represented Afghanistan but included two Englishmen and two Englishwomen. A further twenty members, representing the Government of (British) India, were as multi-ethnic and multilingual as the members of the Afghan delegation. This bilateral and complex mission left India in April 1895 and remained together for the next six months. From the beginning it was riven by incidents of misogyny, racism, and class conflict that affected its ability to perform its diplomatic functions. The reader gains insights into the goals and tactics of two asymmetrical yet competing powers as well as a rare look at the human element in this cross-cultural diplomatic encounter.

Book Diplomacy and the Aristocracy as Patrons of Music and Theatre in the Europe of the Ancien R gime

Download or read book Diplomacy and the Aristocracy as Patrons of Music and Theatre in the Europe of the Ancien R gime written by Iskrena Yordanova and published by Hollitzer Wissenschaftsverlag. This book was released on 2019-11-15 with total page 894 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the dense networks created by diplomatic relationships between European courts and aristocratic households in the early modern age, with the emphasis on celebratory events and the circulation of theatrical plots and practitioners promoted by political and diplomatic connections. The offices of plenipotentiary ministers were often outposts providing useful information about cultural life in foreign countries. Sometimes the artistic strategies defined through the exchanges of couriers were destined to leave a legacy in the history of arts, especially of music and theatre. Ministers favored or promoted careers, described or made pieces of repertoire available to new audiences, and even supported practitioners in their difficult travels by planning profitable tours. They stood behind extraordinary artists and protected many stage performers with their authority, while carefully observing and transmitting precious information about the cultural and musical life of the countries where they resided.

Book The Wicked Waltz and Other Scandalous Dances

Download or read book The Wicked Waltz and Other Scandalous Dances written by Mark Knowles and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2009-06-08 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The waltz, perhaps the most beloved social dance of the 19th and early 20th centuries, once provoked outrage from religious leaders and other self-appointed arbiters of social morality. Decrying the corrupting influence of social dancing, they failed to suppress the popularity of the waltz or other dance crazes of the period, including the Charleston, the tango, and "animal dances" such as the Turkey Trot, Grizzly Bear, and Bunny Hug. This book investigates the development of these popular dances, considering in particular how their very existence as "taboo" cultural fads ultimately provided a catalyst for lasting social reform. In addition to examining the impact of the waltz and other scandalous dances on fashion, music, leisure, and social reform, the text describes the opposition to dance and the proliferation of literature on both sides.
