Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2020 Outstanding Book Award Honorable Mention from Division B (Curriculum Studies) of the American Educational Research Association Researching Resistance: Public Education After Neoliberalism serves two vital functions. First, it explores, explicates, and encourages critical qualitative research that engages the arts and born-digital scholarship. Second, it offers options for understanding neoliberalism, revealing its impact on communities, and resisting it as ideology, practice, and law. The book delves into • strategies for engaging neoliberalism • the Black feminist cyborg theoretical assumptions and intentions of the ethnographic web-based film project • the research and arts-based methodology that walks the fault line between film and ethnography, and • the relationships between the researcher, the activist organizations, and the activism. While the book will focus on neoliberalism within the realm of public education, the implications extend to many other areas of public life. This is an excellent text for classes in qualitative research and public policy. It is the companion text to the digital native ethnographic film project entitled Public Education|Participatory Democracy: After Neoliberalism. Perfect for courses such as: Qualitative Research, Curriculum Studies, Women and Gender Studies, Race and Ethnic Studies, Sociology of Education, Social Justice and Education, Democracy and Civics, Community Engagement, Policy Studies, Service Learning, Education Reform, and Youth Advocacy.

Book African Americans at Risk 2 volumes

Download or read book African Americans at Risk 2 volumes written by Glenn L. Starks and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-06-22 with total page 693 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With all of the progress African Americans have made, they still face many risks that threaten the entire race or place segments in jeopardy of survival. This work examines the widespread problem and suggests solutions. This two-volume set examines the issues and policies that put African Americans at risk in our culture today, utilizing the most recent research from scholars in the field to provide not only objective, encyclopedic information, but also varying viewpoints to encourage critical thinking. The entries comprehensively document how African Americans are treated differently, have more negative outcomes in the same situations than other races, and face risks due to issues inherent in their past or current social and economic conditions. Care is taken to note distinctions between subgroups and not further a "blanket approach" to the diverse members of this minority population. Intended for members of the African American community; societal scholars; students in the fields of health, social studies, and public policy; as well as general readers, this work will provide readers with a deeper understanding of key components affecting the lives of African Americans today.

Book Target Estimation and Adjustment Weighting for Survey Nonresponse and Sampling Bias

Download or read book Target Estimation and Adjustment Weighting for Survey Nonresponse and Sampling Bias written by Devin Caughey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-22 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We elaborate a general workflow of weighting-based survey inference, decomposing it into two main tasks. The first is the estimation of population targets from one or more sources of auxiliary information. The second is the construction of weights that calibrate the survey sample to the population targets. We emphasize that these tasks are predicated on models of the measurement, sampling, and nonresponse process whose assumptions cannot be fully tested. After describing this workflow in abstract terms, we then describe in detail how it can be applied to the analysis of historical and contemporary opinion polls. We also discuss extensions of the basic workflow, particularly inference for causal quantities and multilevel regression and poststratification.

Book Interactive Multimodal Information Management

Download or read book Interactive Multimodal Information Management written by Hervé Bourlard and published by EPFL Press. This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past twenty years, computers and networks have gained a prominent role in supporting human communications. This book presents recent research in multimodal information processing, which demonstrates that computers can achieve more than what telephone calls or videoconferencing can do. The book offers a snapshot of current capabilities for the analysis of human communications in several modalities – audio, speech, language, images, video, and documents – and for accessing this information interactively. The book has a clear application goal, which is the capture, automatic analysis, storage, and retrieval of multimodal signals from human interaction in meetings. This goal provides a controlled experimental framework and helps generating shared data, which is required for methods based on machine learning. This goal has shaped the vision of the contributors to the book and of many other researchers cited in it. It has also received significant long-term support through a series of projects, including the Swiss National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR) in Interactive Multimodal Information Management (IM2), to which the contributors to the book have been connected.

Book The Health Status of Internal Migrants in China

Download or read book The Health Status of Internal Migrants in China written by Peigang Wang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the health status of internal migrants in China and explores a number of related factors, which include their physical health, mental health, fertility, social integration, the current state of basic public health services in China and so on. At present, there are 245 million migrants working in China, which means 1 out of every 6 people is a migrant. The large scale of the migrant population is accompanied by a range of problems concerning e.g. public health and medical services. This book draws on the latest findings and data to describe and analyze the health status of migrants in China from three perspectives – population distribution, time distribution and spatial distribution – and each chapter employs various advanced statistical methods, such as multilevel modeling and propensity score matching. Given the in-depth information it provides, the book will appeal to managers, clinicians, and researchers from many fields. It shares valuable insights into the health status of and related factors concerning China’s internal migrants, while also providing a sound scientific basis for decision-makers.

Book LAC Semiannual Report October 2015

Download or read book LAC Semiannual Report October 2015 written by Alain Ize and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2015 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chapter 1 of the report covers the short-term prospects and provides an analysis of the external factors affecting the region's economic slowdown. The focus is on the adjustment challenges faced by those Latin American countries experiencing a major adverse terms of trade shock, which comes after an unprecedented (in magnitude and duration) period of terms of trade bonanza. Chapter 2 discusses the key topic of this semiannual report, that is, the implications of the slowdown for labor markets on jobs and wages. We describe the broad labor market trends observed during the boom and contrast them with the patterns observed during the slowdown. We also describe the implications of the slowdown for inequality. A corollary of the observed labor market patterns during the slowdown is that some of the gains towards greater income equality achieved in the past decade or so may be reversed, at least in part, and that we may see a divergence between labor income inequality and household income inequality, whereby the latter may rise more than the former.--Résumé de l'éditeur.

Book Statistical Regression Modeling with R

Download or read book Statistical Regression Modeling with R written by Ding-Geng (Din) Chen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-08 with total page 239 pages.
