He spent a very brief period at the Acadmie Julien in Paris in 1904 before moving to London. He then began an association with the Leicester Gallery and Hodder & Stoughton; the gallery would commission paintings from Dulac and then sell the rights to Hodder & Stoughton, who would publish the books while the gallery would sell the paintings. Books produced under this arrangement by Dulac include Stories from the Arabian Nights (1907), an edition of Shakespeare's The Tempest (1908), The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (1909), Stories from Hans Christian Andersen (1911) and Princess Badoura (1913). During World War I he contributed to relief books, including King Albert's Book, Princess Mary's Gift Book, and, unusually, his own Edmund Dulac's Picture Book for the French Red Cross (1915). After the war, the deluxe edition illustrated book became a rarity and Dulac's career in this field was over. His last such books were Edmund Dulac's Fairy Book (1916), the Tanglewood Tales (1918) and the exquisite The Kingdom of the Pearl (1920).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edmvnd Dvalacs Fairy-Book: Fairy Tales of the Allied Nations The old wife sang merrily as she sat in the inglenook stirring the soup, for she had never felt so sad. Many, many years had come and gone, leaving the weight of their winters on her shoulders and the touch of snow on her hair without ever bringing her a little child. This made her and her dear old husband very sad, for there were many children outside, playing in the snow. It seemed hard that not even one among them was their very own. But alas! There was no hope for such a blessing now. Never would they see a little fur cap hanging on the corner of the mantelpiece, nor two little shoes drying by the fire. The old husband brought in a bundle of wood and set it down. Then, as he heard the Children laughing and Clapping their hands outside, he looked out at the window. There they were, dancing with glee round a snow man they had made. He smiled as he saw that it was evidently meant to look like the Mayor of the village, it was so fat and pompous. Book The Allies Fairy Book Illustrated by Arthur Rackham

Download or read book The Allies Fairy Book Illustrated by Arthur Rackham written by Edmund Gosse and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Allies’ Fairy Book contains a selection of traditional fairy tales from the participants of World War One – compiled and edited by Edmund Gosse in 1916. It includes the tales of: ‘Jack the Giant Killer’ (English); ‘The Battle of the Birds’ (Scottish); ‘Lludd and Llevelys’ (Welsh); ‘The Sleeping Beauty (French); ‘Cesarino and the Dragon’ (Italian); ‘What came of picking flowers’ (Portuguese); ‘The Tongue-Cut Sparrow’ (Japanese); ‘Frost’ (Russian); ‘The Golden Apple-Tree and the Nine Peahens’ (Serbian), and many more. The book further contains a series of dazzling colour and black-and-white illustrations – by a master of the craft; Arthur Rackham (1867-1939). One of the most celebrated painters of the British Golden Age of Illustration (which encompassed the years from 1850 until the start of the First World War), Rackham’s artistry is quite simply, unparalleled. Throughout his career, he developed a unique style, combining haunting humour with dream-like romance. Presented alongside the text of the ‘Allied Fairy Book’, his illustrations further refine and elucidate Gosse’s carefully compiled anthology. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, children’s stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors.
