Book The Two Edged Sword

Download or read book The Two Edged Sword written by Donald W. Tucker and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2010-07 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Donald W. Tucker, life from the get-go was a two-edged sword-a "damned if you do/ damned if you don't" black & white shades & wing-tips jungle existence of working the streets of Southside Chicago undercover ("with no cover") as a Federal narcotics and SS agent. Tucker was quick, sharp and street smart. Ultimately he rose through the ranks to become one of America's foremost federal law enforcement administrators and reformers. The Two-Edged Sword is a grim, gutsy, raw in-your-face first-hand account of what it was like to be Black and work as an undercover agent for the Federal Bureau of Narcotics (now called the DEA), and United States Secret Service from 1961-1990-some of the toughest years in this country's history of Civil Rights. Tucker's life story reads like a best-selling 007 whodunit, more fiction than fact-yet all of it really happened. "Too many times the risks were far greater than anticipated, but I was young and dumb," writes Tucker. "I didn't know what I was doing until I felt a .45 slammed against my head. Or, until I found myself being cuffed and dragged into a police car manned by an officer who had no way of knowing I was an undercover agent." "That I survived to tell my story is sheer luck," admits Tucker, whose office walls are plastered with certificates, awards and citations for his outstanding service. Tucker was born and raised in a postage stamp apartment that housed five children and four adults. A football scholarship to the University of Iowa served as his ticket to a better life. In 1961 he received his B.A. with a major in sociology and was immediately hired as an undercover agent for the Chicago FBN. In 1962, Tucker was serving in one of the U.S. Military units called in to escort black student James Meredith through the front door of Ole Miss in Oxford, Mississippi. Just as they were about take off for Oxford, however, Tucker and all other blacks were singled out and ordered to stay on base. This act of segregation was a turning point in Tucker's adult life. From that time on and for the rest of his life, he became a voice to be reckoned with as a Civil Rights advocate. In the Federal Law Enforcement agencies and in subsequent positions as U.S. Marshal for the District of Arizona and Protector for the Federal Courts, he was nicknamed "Tucker the Troublemaker." After a career with the USSS for almost 25 years, Tucker retired in March 1990. On March 26, 1990, he was sworn in as U.S. Marshal for the District of Arizona. In August 1994, Tucker was appointed Chief of Court Security for the Administrative Office of the United States Courts in Washington, D.C. In this capacity, he monitored the security provided to the Federal Judiciary and supervised the $150 million budget. He also coordinated the investigation of the bombing of the Federal Courthouse in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Tucker returned to Arizona in March 1996, and in January 1997, he started his own Investigations Company, T.I.P.S. (Tucker Investigations and Protective Services).

Book excerpt: Joel smiled at the thought that he was becoming an important member of the Blades. Tonight he was the trusted lookout while others took anything of value from the run-down store. This is only the beginning, he thought. Heaven has its hands full looking after Joel Somers. Fifteen and a member of the Blades, a dangerous street gang, Joel considers the other gang members his only true family, even when they treat him like dirt. On the run after the Blades' failed attempt to rob a video store, Joel seeks refuge at a Christian youth conference. There, after hearing a speaker with a story strikingly similar to his own, he gives his life to Christ. So begins a life-changing journey in which Joel experiences the angst of sudden homelessness, the deepening joy of Christian friendships, increasingly dangerous clashes with former gang members, and the ambivalent return of his once-criminal dad. In Double-Edged Blade, readers are given a unique glimpse of the unseen battle between good and evil. God himself and Abner, an angel assigned to protect Joel, discretely nurture his newfound faith while combating human and spiritual antagonists bent on Joel's destruction. But does Joel have enough faith to get him through the deadliest encounter of his life?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Avar-Age Polearms and Edged Weapons, Gergely Csiky offers a presentation of close combat weapons of a nomadic population that migrated from Inner Asia to East-Central Europe. During the late 6th – early 7th centuries, the Avars led successful military campaigns against the Balkan realms of the Byzantine Empire, facilitated by their cavalry’s use of stirrups for the first time in Europe. Besides the classification, manufacturing techniques, fittings, suspension, distribution, and chronology of polearms and edged weapons known from Avar-age burials, a special emphasis is laid on the origins and cultural contacts of these weapons, among them the first edged weapons with curved blades: the sabres. The social significance and, function of these artefacts is discussed in order to place them in nomadic warfare.

Book excerpt: This is A'Kyria.... Somewhere out in space lies the edge of the universe; a point where there is no more void, but an anti-void...or a full space. It is a wall of matter so wide, so far reaching that the beings of a thousand planets cannot trace the end of it. It is where dark matter ends and white matter begins. The end of the universe, it seems, is just the beginning of a world so vast that physics must discover new laws to explain it. The surface is merely the edge of where one stage of the universe transitions into the next. The mysterious white matter has mass but is not effected by or generates gravity. Other mass centers create gravity; they can exist anywhere and in any combination. In this Universe the types of lands are as diverse as the imagination can create. Suns orbit some lands to create rings of life along the endless surface. Our forbears who believed that the sun orbited the planet would find their beliefs valid. Life might exist in a figure 8 set of rings around cavern entrances, radiating areas from tropical to glacial. Moons or planetoids could spin around their own centers creating kaleidoscopes of orbiting bodies. In other areas, suns might exist below the surface creating cavernous lands that cover the surface like lichen; a Dyson sphere with the star positioned in the center and life on the walls. In A'Kyria, the lands do not need to be traditional or follow the methods we deem normal to create places of splendor. Some lands might not need a star at all, but maybe a moon heated by a sun when exiting a cavern and brings the heat down with it as it travels. Imagine a weaker, dimmer star that travels through a channel with all the life existing upon the surface of the cavern. The sun sets when it rises above the surface, leaving the cavern in darkness. There are lands in permanent twilight from suns that barely rise above the surface, as well as, others that remain fixed giving constant daylight and burned lands where the suns are too close together. There are frozen wastes and oceans that stretch to the edges of forever; lands of strange beliefs, alien, bizarre or comforting in its familiarity. It is a land of infinite possibilities, where magic and technology, peasant and space ranger can meet just as easily as neighbors taking out the trash. It is a world where the only limits are the limits you place on yourself. Welcome to A'Kyria.

Book Effect of Trailing Edge Geometry and Thickness on the Performance of Certain Turbine Stator Blading

Download or read book Effect of Trailing Edge Geometry and Thickness on the Performance of Certain Turbine Stator Blading written by Herman W. Prust and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experimental and analytical investigation included solid blades with five different trailing-edge thicknesses and four different trailing-edge geometries. One of the geometries was round, one was square, one was tapered from the suction surface, and the other tapered from the pressure surface. One of the trailing-edge thicknesses was sharp edged; the other four thicknesses were equivalent to about 5, 11, 16, and 20 percent of the blade throat width. The experimental results show increased efficiency loss for increased trailing-edge thickness for all trailing-edge geometries. The blade with round trailing edge, equal to about 11 percent of the blade throat width, had 60 percent more loss than the sharp-edged blade. For the same trailing-edge thickness, square trailing edges caused more loss than round trailing edges, and the tapered trailing edges caused about the same loss as the round trailing edges.
