Book The Private Collection of Edgar Degas

Download or read book The Private Collection of Edgar Degas written by Julie A. Steiner and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 1997 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The art collection assembled by Edgar Degas was remarkable not only for its quality, size, and depth but also for its revelation of Degas's artistic affinities. He acquired great numbers of works by the nineteenth-century French masters Ingres, Delacroix, and Daumier; he bought (or bartered his own pictures for) art by many of his contemporaries, particularly Manet, Cezanne, Gauguin, and Cassatt; and he acquired works by a wide range of other artists, from eminent to little known. The extent of Degas's holdings was not recognized until after his death, when the collection came up for auction in Paris in 1918 and, in what was called the sale of the century, was widely dispersed." "Extensive research has made it possible to "reassemble" that collection in book form. This summary catalogue contains information on the more than five thousand works owned by Degas. For each work catalogued the entry includes, to the extent possible: a description with medium and dimensions; provenance information about Degas's acquisition and ownership of the work; information pertaining to the sale of the work in 1918 (or its disposal earlier), including the purchaser, purchase price, and other data; the current location; selected references; and an illustration. In a concordance, collection sale lot numbers are listed with their corresponding summary catalogue numbers." "This catalogue and its companion volume of essays are published in conjunction with the exhibition "The Private Collection of Edgar Degas," held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, from October 1, 1997, to January 11, 1998."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Degas Sickert and Toulouse Lautrec

Download or read book Degas Sickert and Toulouse Lautrec written by Anna Gruetzner Robins and published by Tate. This book was released on 2005 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Between 1870 and 1910 the burgeoning populations and hectic speed of life in London and Paris fascinated artists on both sides of the English Channel. French artists such as Edgar Degas and Henri Toulouse-Lautrec pioneered new ways of representing city life, profoundly influencing many British artists." "This publication examines the exciting and controversial exchange of pictorial and aesthetic ideas that took place as British art adapted to modernity, and explores the rich interplay between the making, exhibiting and collecting of new figurative art." "The pivotal figures in this cross-cultural dialogue are Degas, hailed in Britain as a genius; Sickert, whose Degas-inspired art explored the gritty, urban side of modern life; and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, whose largest one-man show was staged in Regent Street, London. Works by these and other key artists, including Vuillard, Bonnard, Tissot, Whistler, Steer and Rothenstein, involved society portraiture and posters, scenes of the street and public entertainment, creating evocative images of the decadence and spectacle of the fin-de-siecle metropolis."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theo van Gogh, Vincent's younger brother, was an influential art dealer working in Paris in the 1880s. Artists and collectors respected him for his insight and integrity, Vincent spoke of his brother's humanity, and Paul Gauguin described Theo's death as an irretrievable loss. The extensive art collection that Theo built forms the core of today's collection in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam. Theo van Gogh (1857-1891): Art Dealer, Collector and Brother of Vincent presents his life and work in the context of the French art world of his day. Dazzling illustrations include works by Vincent that held a special significance for Theo, as well as a representative selection of the works Theo bought and sold as a dealer. The book provides a fascinating study of the sympathetic and intelligent art expert Theo van Gogh and a lively portrait of European painting in the second half of the 19th century.

Book Edgar Degas Sculpture

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Gallery of Art (U.S.)
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 9780691148977

Download or read book Edgar Degas Sculpture written by National Gallery of Art (U.S.) and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the sculptures of French artist Edgar Degas (1834-1917). Degas is known for his work in painting, sculpture, printmaking and drawing. He is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, although he rejected the term, and preferred to be called a realist. Although best known as a painter, his most widely known work is a sculpture, "Little Dancer Aged Fourteen". Executed in wax, near life-sized, dressed in a ballerina's tutu, with real ballet slippers and real hair, the sculpture caused a sensation when it was exhibited in 1881. It is the only sculpture Degas ever showed publicly, though more than one hundred -- of dancers, horses, and bathers -- were found in his studio after he died, all dusty, some fallen apart. This work includes essays on Degas' life and work, his sculptural technique and materials, and the story of the sculptures after his death. It features art-historical and technical discussions of every work in the collection as well as concordances and bibliography.
