Book excerpt: Prewar Bradford, England, 1937. A sinful act is perpetrated by a father against his daughter that will alter the lives of three future generations. Rose's troubled past haunts her forever. Lucy seduces a man of the cloth and has to bear its devastating consequences. Samuel escapes real life and journeys through his own hell to try and find what he has lost. Children are deprived of a normal upbringing. Secrets, when revealed, have a destructive power. These are ordinary people whose lives go full circle in their voyage of self-discovery and who undergo a transformation resulting from an extraordinary existence. Each of them has to overcome his or her tragedy before the realization that great success, or the reaching of one's own goals, does not give the pleasure, happiness, or satisfaction expected. Ultimately, it is only in the real values of love, understanding, self-sacrifice, and forgiveness that the outcome has to be found.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A "brisk and entertaining" (Wall Street Journal) journey into the mystery behind why the forbidden fruit became an apple, upending an explanation that stood for centuries. How did the apple, unmentioned by the Bible, become the dominant symbol of temptation, sin, and the Fall? Temptation Transformed pursues this mystery across art and religious history, uncovering where, when, and why the forbidden fruit became an apple. Azzan Yadin-Israel reveals that Eden’s fruit, once thought to be a fig or a grape, first appears as an apple in twelfth-century French art. He then traces this image back to its source in medieval storytelling. Though scholars often blame theologians for the apple, accounts of the Fall written in commonly spoken languages—French, German, and English—influenced a broader audience than cloistered Latin commentators. Azzan Yadin-Israel shows that, over time, the words for “fruit” in these languages narrowed until an apple in the Garden became self-evident. A wide-ranging study of early Christian thought, Renaissance art, and medieval languages, Temptation Transformed offers an eye-opening revisionist history of a central religious icon.

Book Eve s Apple

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Lindsey Thomas
  • Publisher : Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
  • Release : 2020-06-25
  • ISBN : 1098025962
  • Pages : 42 pages

Download or read book Eve s Apple written by William Lindsey Thomas and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-06-25 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eve's Apple is the story of how one lady, Eve, contracted and spread the most fatal disease ever known to mankind as an act of her mind and will. The name of this disease is sin. This disease of sin is the root cause of all war, murder, stealing, lies, and every other known form of evil in the world. The result has been the death of every generation of mankind who has ever lived. "But wait a minute," you say. "I believe death is caused by old age or cancer, a heart attack, or some other physical problem or disease and not by some religious belief called sin." This is partly true. But what is the root cause of all known diseases? And if all known diseases result in death, isn't this just another way sin manifests itself? In addition to all these facts, I believe the story of Eve's apple defines the history of the human race. Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote, "There is no such thing as history, only biography." Well, if history is a collection of biographies, or stories, then this story of Eve's apple ranks among the most important of all. The story of Eve's apple began mankind's conflict with a good and evil in our world. This struggle by you and me and the rest of the human race has affected our world and history more than any other challenge in life. How mankind has chosen to struggle with this conflict has shaped the history of our world If the above reasons for Eve's importance to history and your life are not enough, may I suggest one more: contained in this story of Eve is the prophecy of God's answer to Eve's sin, which contains faith, hope, and love.

Book Adventures with Apples and Snakes

Download or read book Adventures with Apples and Snakes written by George M. Goodrich and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-07-26 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can you visualize what Eve saw when “her eyes were opened” from the effects of her “apple break” in Genesis 2 and 3? What was the snake expecting to gain from this adventure? These and many other questions are discussed in Apples and Snakes. The book provides many insights for personal growth resulting from Eve’s apple and snake encounter. The format can also be used for small group study as well. Discussion questions are included. The fall of humanity from God’s grace has many lessons for everyday living even today. The book divides the lessons into six sections: the apple; the knowledge; the consequences, and the final sacrifice. The lessons are explored with the use of questions and examples. Some of the questions serve as chapter titles. The examples are from the author’s experiences with friends, business associates, and family.

Book excerpt: In The Apple of Eden it came to pass that the devilspeedily proved himself to be much more shrewd than any future shrew could ever have hoped to be, and it went without saying that it was also pretty clear that he was also much wiser than any Great horned owl ever could have given a very loud hoot about. 2 Nor did Adam or Eve ever see that steamy cow pie that Lucifer's ox face was quickly throwing at them, within his unseen dimension, when his changing form of that stupid boa was finally behind him, like the very spineless thing that he chose to become. 3 Neither were the most terrible consequences of their disobedience even beginning to sink deeply into the mind's of that very first man and woman. 4 For they weren't wise in any of their ways yet, since they were still far too young and reckless to resist Satan's most masterful real twisted charms. 5 'Twas therefore the foreseen time when Lucifer fully became the lawless one, as well as the most fearful hour of the birth of that master of manipulation, who was always destined to become the number one sultan of the reddest blood splatter, and the Grand Turk of the whitest lies at the very same time. 6 But it was also the very uneasy moment when that son of the very best deception would finally transform into the Czar of the blackest magic, and the very weird moment additionally, of some of the most amazing moments, when that clown of clowns first signed on, to become the one to preside over as much puss as possible, which would slowly come forth from green infected places of rotting flesh, always oozing out pretty slowly, like some real death-inviting-germs of the very worse kind. 7 'Twas also the awful time of paradise lost, the terrible time of transferred authority, the horrid time of tears, the uneasy time of a multitude of fearful fears, along with the tearful time of regret, as well as the time of no more time for Man to live in innocence any longer. 8 But it was additionally the most terrifying time of lost hopes, abandoned dreams, and misplaced loyalties since confusion poured over Eden like a hard hitting torrent. 9 'twas also the unpleasant time for the vision to die, along with the time for God Almighty, our Most High, to be forced into having to write some brand new rules. 10 But to give that real dirty-dealing new devil his due, it goes to the credit of his ingenious that he was pretty believable when he said, "Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil." 11 For that liar of liars dared to tell the truth, and some lies in the very same moment. 12 After all, he was able to say what he did with some real convincing conviction; For Satan knew very well that they wouldn't physically die through their actions. 13 For it was a very sure thing, that God was only talking about their spiritual death. 14 But that was a fact which went way over the heads of Adam and Eve. 15 Nor was the rest of what Lucifer said false in any way. For that scuzy scuz knew beyond a shadow of doubt that their eyes really would be opened up very wide, as wide as their mouths would unexpectedly fall very low, once they realized that their birthday suits didn't even have any wrapping to cover them all up.

  • Publisher : Reaktion Books
  • Release : 2014-11-15
  • ISBN : 1780233825
  • Pages : 257 pages

Download or read book Apple written by Marcia Reiss and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2014-11-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gala and Honeycrisp. Pink Lady and Pacific Rose. King Luscious and Winesap. The names of apples are as juicy as the fruit itself. One of the most widely distributed fruits on the planet, apples have always meant something beyond food and drink—their seeds have been planted deep within the myths, religion, and art of nearly every culture. They are symbols of beauty, desire, and sin; signs of hidden poisons and healthy eating; emblems of computers, phones, and music. Exploring the symbolism, art, and literature of the apple, as well as its botanical background, Marcia Reiss follows this iconic fruit from its origins to its now-ubiquitous presence in our world. Journeying back to the apple’s germination in the mountains of Central Asia, Reiss travels along the Silk Road to Europe and the New World. She reveals that, from Charlemagne to Johnny Appleseed to the colonization of South Africa, where settlers were required to plant apple orchards that led to the development of new towns, apples have become a global commodity. In addition to delving into the latest debates about chemical sprays, Reiss looks at the rise of heirloom orchards and the hopes and fears of genetic developments. She also tells the parallel tale of apple cider, its decline during the Temperance Movement and its return as an artisanal alternative to wine. Beautifully illustrated with historic and contemporary images and containing a directory of popular and heirloom varieties, Apple is a book ripe for devouring.

Book Apples from the Garden of Eden

Download or read book Apples from the Garden of Eden written by Rocco Scibetta and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2016-01-21 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if one day you could reinvent your sins instead of being forgiven for them? What if you could take back a mistake or a misjudgment, a compulsion and turn it into a second chance without risking your liberty or sanity. Felix X. Cole is a brilliant madman who dared to dream. A man of his time living in a society that might have outgrown itself. This is a satire about crumbling morals and fragile denizens in a throwaway culture saturated with adolescent wisdom who never gets it right the first time. A surreal throw down between Rockwellian depiction and the disenchanted persons on the street. "Apples from the garden of Eden" is a thought provoking story that raises the question. If you were given a second chance to fall in love again after what it cost you the first time... could you beat the odds? Even Adam should get a second chance.

Download or read book Apple written by Erika Janik and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2011-10-15 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gravenstein. Coe’s Golden Drop. Mendocino Cox. The names sound like something from the imagination of Tolkien or perhaps the ingredients in a dubious magical potion rather than what they are—varieties of apples. But as befits their enchanting names, apples have transfixed and beguiled humans for thousands of years. Apple: A Global History explores the cultural and culinary importance of a fruit born in the mountains of Kazakhstan that has since traversed the globe to become a favorite almost everywhere. From the Garden of Eden and Homer’s Odyssey to Johnny Appleseed, William Tell, and even Apple Computer, Erika Janik shows how apples have become a universal source of sustenance, health, and symbolism from ancient times to the present day. Featuring many mouthwatering illustrations, this exploration of the planet’s most popular fruit includes a guide to selecting the best apples, in addition to apple recipes from around the world, including what is believed to be the first recorded apple recipe from Roman gourmand Marcus Apicius. And Janik doesn’t let us forget that apples are not just good eating; their juice also makes for good drinking—as the history of cider in North America and Europe attests. Janik grew up surrounded by apple iconography in Washington, the “apple state,” so there is no better author to tell this fascinating story. Readers will eat up this surprising and entertaining tale of a fruit intricately linked to human history.
