Book Description of New Vacuum Chamber Correction Concept

Download or read book Description of New Vacuum Chamber Correction Concept written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For rapid cycled accelerators eddy currents induced in vacuum chambers (VC) are typically the dominant source of systematic and random field aberrations. Complex thin wall VC are expensive and delicate where bakeout is required, as in the AGS Booster under construction. Thick wall VC are rugged and economical but produce large eddy currents. A ''Self-Correction'' concept has been developed and tested which corrects automatically by transformer action, even for variable /dot B/ cycles. Coils attached to the outside of the VC cancel eddy current aberrations over the entire ''good field'' aperture. The (inexpensive) correction coils follow the local contour of the VC, so large transverse VC movements are tolerated; both the aberrations and their corrections have the same displaced coordinates. Experimental results are presented for Booster correction coil designs demonstrating both self-correction and excitation by a separate power supply. Analytic results applicable to the Booster and other fast cycling accelerators are discussed. The eddy current field aberrations induced in a pre-production full size vacuum chamber inserted in an AGS Booster dipole have been successfully eliminated by the ''self correction'' coils attached to its surface. The voltage induced in a two-turns per pole ''back leg'' winding is sufficient to supply the necessary current through the correction winding. A nichrome wire attached in series provides adjustable resistance for current control. 2 refs., 7 figs.

Book Vacuum Chamber Eddy Current Self correction for the AGS Booster Accelerator

Download or read book Vacuum Chamber Eddy Current Self correction for the AGS Booster Accelerator written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The large sextupole and other multipoles induced by eddy currents in the vacuum chamber (VC) designed for the AGS Booster dipoles have been cancelled by simple coils attached to the VC surface. A two turns per pole back leg winding provides the mmf required to power the correction coil by transformer action, automatically correcting even for the variable {dot B} magnet excitation. Much larger VC positional errors of translation and rotation are acceptable because the coils follow the VC contour: the aberrations and their corrections locally have the same misplaced coordinate system. The self-correction concept could be applied to quadrupoles. However, Booster quadrupole measurements show that induced higher harmonics from VC and other eddy current sources are very small. Thus, with self-correction of the dipole VC eddy current fields, {dot B} effects on the proton rapid cycling Booster optics are reduced to tracking of the fundamental dipole and quadrupole fields. This can be automatically controlled using field monitoring transducers located in a dipole and quadrupole operated in series with the Booster magnets. 2 refs., 4 figs.

Book Harmonics Suppression of Vacuum Chamber Eddy Current Induced Fields with Application to SSC Low Energy Booster Magnets

Download or read book Harmonics Suppression of Vacuum Chamber Eddy Current Induced Fields with Application to SSC Low Energy Booster Magnets written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An expression for eddy currents induced in a thin-walled conductor due to a time-dependent electromagnet field excitation is formulated, allowing subsequent analytical development of a closed form expression predicting vacuum chamber eddy current induced field harmonics in iron-core multipole electromagnets. A passive technique for harmonics suppression is presented with specific application to the design of the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) Low Energy Booster (LEB) Magnets.

Book excerpt: As the applied magnetic fields are increased during acceleration, eddy currents are induced in the vacuum chamber. These result in magnetic field perturbations which we shall estimate for the Booster and X-Ray Rings. Our calculation follows that of Asner, in particular, we use image currents to satisfy the boundary conditions imposed by the iron poles of the magnets. The strength of the magnetic field perturbations is roughly three times greater with the iron poles present than absent.

Book MEASUREMENTS AND MODELING OF EDDY CURRENT EFFECTS IN BNL S AGS BOOSTER

Download or read book MEASUREMENTS AND MODELING OF EDDY CURRENT EFFECTS IN BNL S AGS BOOSTER written by C. GARDNER and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent beam experiments at BNL's AGS Booster have enabled us to study in more detail the effects of eddy currents on the lattice structure and our control over the betatron tune. The Booster is capable of operating at ramp rates as high as 9 T/sec. At these ramp rates eddy currents in the vacuum chambers significantly alter the fields and gradients seen by the beam as it is accelerated. The Booster was designed with these effects in mind and to help control the field uniformity and linearity in the Booster Dipoles special vacuum chambers were designed with current windings to negate the affect of the induced eddy currents. In this report results from betatron tune measurements and eddy current simulations will be presented. We will then present results from modeling the accelerator using the results of the magnetic field simulations and compare these to the measurements.

Book Eddy current induced Multipole Field Calculations

Download or read book Eddy current induced Multipole Field Calculations written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time-varying magnetic fields of magnets in booster accelerators induce substantial eddy currents in the vacuum chambers. The eddy currents in turn act to produce various multipole fields that act on the beam. These fields must be taken into account when doing a lattice design. In the APS booster, the relatively long dipole magnets (3 meters) are linearly ramped to accelerate the injected 325 MeV beam to 7 GeV. Substantial dipole and sextupole fields are generated in the elliptical vacuum chamber from the induced eddy currents. In this note, formulas for the induced dipole and sextupole fields are derived for elliptical and rectangular vacuum chambers for a time-varying dipole field. A discussion is given on how to generalize this derivation method to include eddy-current-induced multipole fields from higher multipole magnets (quadrupole, sextupole, etc.). Finally, transient effects are considered.

Book Comparison of Multipole Expansion and Exact Form of the Eddy Current Field of the AGS Booster

Download or read book Comparison of Multipole Expansion and Exact Form of the Eddy Current Field of the AGS Booster written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies are made on magnetic field representation using a multipole expansion as well as the exact form to calculate the magnetic field produced by eddy currents in the vacuum chamber of the AGS Booster as well as the field produced by three turn correction coils attached to the top and bottom of the vacuum chamber. The multiple representation of the chamber field does not converge to the next field when X> 30mm and limits the particle motion. When the exact form of the chamber field is used, initial amplitudes in the horizontal plane (measured at QF) can be nearly as large as the chamber half aperture. Use of three turn correction coils to compensate the eddy current fields seems to reduce rather than increase the acceptance. 6 figs., 3 tabs.
