Book The Fragmentation of Being

Download or read book The Fragmentation of Being written by Kris McDaniel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fragmentation of Being offers answers to some of the most fundamental questions in ontology. There are many kinds of beings but are there also many kinds of being? The world contains a variety of objects, each of which, let us provisionally assume, exists, but do some objects exist in different ways? Do some objects enjoy more being or existence than other objects? Are there different ways in which one object might enjoy more being than another? Most contemporary metaphysicians would answer "no" to each of these questions. So widespread is this consensus that the questions this book addressed are rarely even raised let alone explicitly answered. But Kris McDaniel carefully examines a wide range of reasons for answering each of these questions with a "yes". In doing so, he connects these questions with many important metaphysical topics, including substance and accident, time and persistence, the nature of ontological categories, possibility and necessity, presence and absence, persons and value, ground and consequence, and essence and accident. In addition to discussing contemporary problems and theories, McDaniel also discusses the ontological views of many important figures in the history of philosophy, including Aquinas, Aristotle, Descartes, Heidegger, Husserl, Kant, Leibniz, Meinong, and many more.

Book Metametaphysics

Download or read book Metametaphysics written by David Chalmers and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metaphysics asks questions about existence: for example, do numbers really exist? Metametaphysics asksquestions about metaphysics: for example, do its questions have determinate answers? If so, are these answers deep and important, or are they merely a matter of how we use words? What is the proper methodology for their resolution? These questions have received a heightened degree of attention lately with new varieties of ontological deflationism and pluralism challenging the kind of realism that has become orthodoxy in contemporary analytic metaphysics. This volume concerns the status and ambitions of metaphysics as a discipline. It brings together many of the central figures in the debate with their most recent work on the semantics, epistemology, and methodology of metaphysics.

Book One - The Magical Volcano - Accompanied by a three-meter-long lizard named Ted, Molly and Michael see something in the belly of a volcano. Intrigued, they climb down and find a bright turquoise lake just like the one they found inside the local copper mine. Next, they discover a bizarre collection of plants feeding off the contaminated water. And if that's not strange enough, they encounter some animals living in the jungle inside the volcano. Like the dinosaurs that roamed the earth some 60 million ago, these huge beasts are astonishing. Determined to understand how their existence is possible, Molly and Michael decide to investigate. Join their exciting journey through the jungle where they bump into a mad daddy cassowary and stumble through an invisible shield around a top-secret research laboratory owned by the greedy corporation, Symbiotica. Inside, they find something mysterious that will lead them on an even stranger journey, riding the mycelium network under the ground. See the plants and animals through their eyes, hear the curious sounds and discover what it feels like to be in the presence of the most magical being of all - Adali the bird. Book Three - Adali's Magic - Adali takes Molly and Michael on an incredible journey to another dimension. The birthplace of the guardians. It’s an astonishing and mind-expanding experience that makes the kids more determined than ever to protect the natural environment from further damage. Book First You Build a Cloud

Download or read book First You Build a Cloud written by K. C. Cole and published by HMH. This book was released on 2012-07-18 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This clearly written and compelling look at physics and physicists offers “thousands of new ways to see our daily world more richly” (Douglas Hofstadter, author of Gödel, Escher, Bach). For many of us, physics has always been a thing of mystery and complexity. K. C. Cole, an award-winning science writer, specializes in making its wonders accessible to the everyday reader. This book uses lively prose, metaphors, and anecdotes to allow us to comprehend the nuances of physics: gravity and light, color and shape, quarks and quasars, particles and stars, force and strength. It also shows us how the physical world is so deeply intertwined with the ways we think about culture, poetry, and philosophy, and explores the workings of such legendary scientific minds as Richard Feynman, Victor Weisskopf, brothers Frank Oppenheimer and J. Robert Oppenheimer, Philip Morrison, Vera Kistiakowsky, and Stephen Jay Gould. “An exemplary science writer . . . For readers without scientific background, Cole gracefully introduces relativity, quantum theory, optics, astrophysics, and other significant disciplines, never getting bogged down in unnecessary explanation. Thus, you may not learn all about thermodynamics from reading her chapter on it, but you will learn enough to think seriously about the entropy in your own life. Cole sprinkles her text with comments from famous scientists—‘Space is blue, and birds fly in it,’ said Heisenberg, and Faraday said, ‘Nothing is too wonderful to be true’—that are not only delightful in themselves but perfectly suited to her own text. No review of Cole’s book could be too wonderful to be true.” —Booklist
