Book excerpt: When the peccadilloes of his law-firm partner sink the business, Eddie Amos returns to the Commonwealth Attorney's office as a prosecutor having as his chief goals the conviction-on the basis of suspected longstanding sexual-abuse of boys-of (1) the administrator of a tax-funded youth organization in the central-Kentucky city of Lexington, and (2) the city's drug-czar/pimp. At the same time, a young attorney instigates a heretofore-unheard-of wrongful-death lawsuit, generated by a drunk driver, against a distillery, and the two lawyers work together to achieve their goals. An assassination, two murders and a possible suicide impact or result from their efforts. Characters ranging from the most sublime to the seamiest-an Episcopal priest (Vietnam veteran), drug pushers, dope-heads, prostitutes, embezzlers, rogue cops, troubled teenagers, a greed-driven booze-maker, corporate lawyers, sexual perverts, a hit-man, sex-abuse victims, and a devout and beautiful paralegal-are caught up in the process, during the development of which Amos, the priest, a restaurateur embittered by the drunk-driver-induced death of her husband, a corporate attorney's wife, the young lawyer and the paralegal progress through spiritual journeys and/or experience the developing of romantic attachments or profound heartbreak, but find some answers to hard questions.

Book excerpt: When the peccadilloes of his law-firm partner sink the business, Eddie Amos returns to the Commonwealth Attorney's office as a prosecutor, having as his chief goals the conviction of (1) on longstanding sexual-abuse matters, the administrator of a city-funded youth organization, and (2) the city's drug-czar/pimp. A number of subplots feed into this main plot, involving a lawsuit (first of its kind) against a distillery, as well as an assassination, two murders and a possible suicide. Characters range all the way from an Episcopal priest (Vietnam vet) to drug pushers, dope-heads, prostitutes, crooked cops, embezzlers, troubled teenagers and lawyers. There are four romantic involvements, the most captivating being that of a young lawyer and his devoutly religious paralegal. The young lawyer, planning to use for advancement of his career the inevitable notoriety attached to such a bizarre case, convinces the widow of a truck-driver killed in an accident caused by a drunk driver to sue the distillery that made the whiskey involved ? instead of the usual bartender or bar owner ? for damages, something that has never been done. Amos attempts to find employment at the large firm representing the distillery but is turned down by a partner to whose wife Amos was once practically engaged, the upshot being Amos' return to the prosecutor's office. The murder of the distillery's embezzler/comptroller causes Amos to develop damning facts concerning the distillery president that he proposes to trade to the young lawyer in exchange for the lawyer's agreement to institute a sexual-abuse civil suit against the administrator of the government-funded youth activity, who has harmed youngsters for years. Because of city pressure, rumors about the man have never been followed-up, thus the need for a civil case in order to bring pressure to institute a criminal case. The administrator of the youth program indoctrinates youngsters in perversion techniques (causing them too much shame to talk about) and feeds them to the pimp/drug-czar, a totally amoral monster who pimps both boys and women, using/abusing them and keeping them quiet through sheer fear. He also runs the entire illicit drug operation in the city. Amos figures a way to bring him down, though he never gets to do it because both men die violently. The young lawyer, who is independently wealthy, falls in love with one of his paralegals, a bright, attractive lady who researches and designs a viable ? brilliant ? lawsuit based on precedents set in tobacco cases, who is deeply religious, applies successfully for a short mission endeavor and presents him with a new set of values to consider. Though he has always loved the woman to whom he was nearly engaged many years before, Amos and the Episcopal priest are attracted to a restaurateur, widowed when her husband was killed by a drunk driver a few years before. Her son and Amos experience a mutual animosity, ruining any chance for Amos and the boy's mother to have a relationship, and the boy is instrumental in Amos' death.
