Download or read book Rock on Film written by Fred Goodman and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2022-07-26 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For rock music and film buffs alike, this is the ultimate guide exploring the electrifying, entertaining, and often daring marriage of rock & roll and cinema. When the use of Bill Haley’s “Rock Around the Clock” turned 1955’s Blackboard Jungle into a teen sensation and a box-office smash, it proved the opening shot in a cinematic and cultural revolution. Starting with Elvis Presley and the teensploitation films of the ’50s and ’60s, in Rock on Film award-winning author and former Rolling Stone editor Fred Goodman takes readers on a wide-ranging journey through film and pop history. Along the way, he measures the transformative impact of the mid-’60s landmarks A Hard Day’s Night and Dont Look Back and how they seeded an almost unbelievably broad genre of films made by increasingly ambitious musicians and filmmakers across the past seven decades. From the carefree to the complex, the mindless to the mind-bending, rock films have staked out their own turf by simultaneously celebrating innocence and challenging artistic and social conventions. With an insightful round-up of fifty must-see rock films spanning crowd-pleasers, art-house favorites, underground gems, and undisputed classics, Rock on Film surveys the nearly seventy-year canon of a genre like no other. A series of original interviews with Cameron Crowe, Jim Jarmusch, Penelope Spheeris, Taylor Hackford, and John Waters illuminates how rock has influenced the work of some of the most divergent and thoughtful directors in movie history. Illustrated throughout by more than 150 full-color and black-and-white images, Rock on Film brings the history of music in the movies to vivid life.

Book Aspects

    Book Details:
  • Author : Edward A. Vazquez
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2018-01-02
  • ISBN : 022640806X
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book Aspects written by Edward A. Vazquez and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stretching lengths of yarn across interior spaces, American artist Fred Sandback (1943–2003) created expansive works that underscore the physical presence of the viewer. This book, the first major study of Sandback, explores the full range of his art, which not only disrupts traditional conceptions of material presence, but also stages an ethics of interaction between object and observer. Drawing on Sandback’s substantial archive, Edward A. Vazquez demonstrates that the artist’s work—with all its physical slightness and attentiveness to place, as well as its relationship to minimal and conceptual art of the 1960s—creates a link between viewers and space that is best understood as sculptural even as it almost surpasses physical form. At the same time, the economy of Sandback’s site-determined practice draws viewers’ focus to their connection to space and others sharing it. As Vazquez shows, Sandback’s art aims for nothing less than a total recalibration of the senses, as the spectator is caught on neither one side nor the other of an object or space, but powerfully within it.

Popular Daphne Blake and über-nerd Velma Dinkley are not friends. They aren't enemies either, but they don't have any reason to speak to each other, and that's how they prefer it. The two girls grew up together - they'd been best friends since pre-K - but when they hit middle school, Daphne dropped Velma and never looked back. These days, Daphne's deep in the popular crowd, daughter of the richest family in town, while Velma's an outsider, hiding from the world behind her thick glasses. When they run into each other in the halls of Crystal Cove High, they look the other way. But then Daphne's best friend, Marcy - who happens to be Velma's cousin - goes missing. A century ago, there was a wave of disappearances in Crystal Cove, and many local people believe that supernatural forces were behind it. Now the whole town believes those same forces are back . . . and up to no good. Daphne and Velma may be the only ones who can solve the mystery and save Marcy-if they can trust each other enough to try. Especially since the truth might be stranger-and scarier-than either girl can imagine . . .

Book Tell em bout the Blues

Download or read book Tell em bout the Blues written by Fred Reif and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-05-13 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes, the seemingly most insignificant gestures can lead to life enhancing events . . .That's what happened over 50 years ago when I met Fred Reif. We were five young strangers who came together to form a 'Jug Band' for a few laughs at some parties . . . or, hopefully, get a gig at the new and growing 'Coffee House; venues where Folk Music was usually featured. We presented Fred with a washboard and told him he had been tagged as the Official Washboard Player of "The Original Low Classed, Half-Fast, Jug & Blues Band". I loaned him some record albums of old Folk & Blues artists to get a feel for the sound we were pursuing. Fred returned to the next rehearsal session with a "spark in his eye & a skip in his step." He was hooked on the Blues! ...and the Blues became a career passion.Over the following decades, Fred traveled hundreds of thousands of miles promoting, encouraging, befriending, and supporting traditional Blues artists. Many of these important figures in America's musical heritage were struggling and all but forgotten. Fred became their advocate & friend. I watched first hand as Fred 'rediscovered' recording legend Lightnin' Slim (Otis Hicks) in a tough neighborhood in southern Michigan. A couple of years later, I had the honor of performing in the backup band for Lightnin' in a music festival in England, sharing the bill with Chuck Berry, Pink Floyd, and others. Fred's dedication and hard work had restored Lightnin Slim's career . . . and launched his own. In the years ahead, Fred and his ever-present washboard would restore & inspire the careers of many important Blues artists in American, Europe & the Caribbean. This current volume is a reflection of some of the many interesting people, places, and events that have been part of the serendipitous life and legacy of my dear friend, Fred Reif John Tunnoch Gilmour
