This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ed, Geers' Experience With the Trotters and Pacers For several years past friends and horsemen in different parts of the country have importuned me to give in published form my experience in training and driving light-harness horses, and as no work of this character has appeared in this country for a number of years, it occurred to me that if I was ever to do so the present is a very proper time to comply with this request, therefore I have rather reluctantly decided to publish this volume. I am indebted to Mr. P. M. Babcock, an old friend of mine, now residing in Buffalo, for whatever merit the editorial work of this book may possess, as the main part of it has been written by him, aided by such suggestions as I have been able to give. I have never kept a diary or other memoranda and hence the dates herein given are mainly from recollection, and, while some of them may be wrong, I believe them to be substantially correct. With the expectation of a generous criticism of its merits and defects this book is submitted to the consideration of all who care to peruse its pages. Book Campbell Brown s Civil War

Download or read book Campbell Brown s Civil War written by Terry L. Jones and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2001-10-01 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War writings of G. Campbell Brown—cousin, stepson, and staff officer of famed Confederate General Richard S. Ewell—provide a comprehensive account of the major campaigns in the north Virginia theater. Terry L. Jones has performed an invaluable service by gathering these widely scattered but oft-cited primary sources into a deftly edited volume. Brown’s memoir details his service under Ewell during the campaigns of First Manassas, the Shenandoah Valley, the Seven Days, Second Manassas, and Gettysburg, and under Joseph E. Johnston at Vicksburg. His correspondence and memoranda form a suspenseful recounting of the Overland Campaign, the siege of Richmond, and a harrowing retreat that ended with the capture of Brown and Ewell at Sayler’s Creek just three days before Robert E. Lee’s surrender. Their subsequent three-month captivity in Fort Warren, Massachusetts, is documented in Brown’s letters. Leaders such as Ewell, Johnston, Lee (whose daughter Brown tried to marry), “Stonewall” Jackson, and Jubal A. Early come to life in rich anecdotes and occasional critiques of their wartime actions. A southern aristocrat from Tennessee, Brown exhibits a grasp of the nuances of military protocol that is as compelling as his descriptions of battlefield horrors. Brown’s eagerness to report all he sees—from the quotidian to the bloodcurdling—makes his writings among the finest to come out of the Civil War. Scholars will want copies of this volume at close hand for ready reference, and buffs will treasure the play of a nimble mind over a dire and fascinating time.

Book Middle Tennessee Horse Breeding

Download or read book Middle Tennessee Horse Breeding written by Perky Beisel and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2007-10-10 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breeding fine horses has been both big business and pastime for Middle Tennesseans since settlers first entered the Cumberland Valley during the American Revolution. The fertile pastures and mild climate of the area lent itself to horse breeding, and the populace embraced the benefits. Horses functioned as the technology that plowed fields, moved goods and people, and serviced the military. Horse racetracks dotted the landscape, and a persons social status sometimes rested on the possession of fine horses and good horsemanship. This combination of culture and geography in Middle Tennessee gave rise to some of the most celebrated horse breeders in the nation.
