Al's a shady drunk who used to be a fighter, but now spends his time pounding shots and starting brawls at his local pub. After a particularly nasty fracas, he gets his wasted ass lost in a haunted ghetto where he runs afoul of the ghost of a brutal seventies-era pimp. With said pimp-ghost threatening to shuffle him right off the mortal coil, Al reaches back and punches that mother#$%&@# straight to Hell. Once he sobers up and takes stock of what just went down, Al realizes he's got something he never had before: a reason to drag himself out of his $#%&@ life and find somethingreal in the unreal world. See, Al lives in the Quiet City of Bitburg, a place whose residents have turned a blind eyeto the messed-up paranormal #$@% infesting their home since its inception. The rotting metropolis hides innumerable unnatural horrors, and one little ghostpuncher ain't gonna be enough to fight them all. Now Al don't know #$%@ about all that. But he's gonna learn quick, because Bitburg is an old place with a past darker than his blackest blackout, and the things lurking in that darkness aren't likely to take too kindly to the light he's about to shine on them. With a little help from some unlikely friends and whole $%#&load of booze, he might just survive the tropes and trials that come with playing his part in the horror story unfolding around him. A fever-dream of violence and visceral humanity, written masterfully and with an incomparable wit. Macabre, funny, poetic, uncompromising." - Nicholas Morine

Book Albrecht D rer and the Epistolary Mode of Address

Download or read book Albrecht D rer and the Epistolary Mode of Address written by Shira Brisman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-01-20 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art historians have long looked to letters to secure biographical details; clarify relationships between artists and patrons; and present artists as modern, self-aware individuals. This book takes a novel approach: focusing on Albrecht Dürer, Shira Brisman is the first to argue that the experience of writing, sending, and receiving letters shaped how he treated the work of art as an agent for communication. In the early modern period, before the establishment of a reliable postal system, letters faced risks of interception and delay. During the Reformation, the printing press threatened to expose intimate exchanges and blur the line between public and private life. Exploring the complex travel patterns of sixteenth-century missives, Brisman explains how these issues of sending and receiving informed Dürer’s artistic practices. His success, she contends, was due in large part to his development of pictorial strategies—an epistolary mode of address—marked by a direct, intimate appeal to the viewer, an appeal that also acknowledged the distance and delay that defers the message before it can reach its recipient. As images, often in the form of prints, coursed through an open market, and artists lost direct control over the sale and reception of their work, Germany’s chief printmaker navigated the new terrain by creating in his images a balance between legibility and concealment, intimacy and public address.

Book Securing Sierra Leone 1997 2013

Download or read book Securing Sierra Leone 1997 2013 written by Peter Albrecht and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-19 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1991 and 2002, Sierra Leone was wracked by a devastating civil war and the complete collapse of state institutions. Since then, however, the UK’s contribution to post-war reconstruction has been widely held up as an example of successful stabilisation and state-building – particularly of the country’s security and justice institutions. Securing Sierra Leone, 1997–2013 examines how the process of state-building through security-sector reform developed in Sierra Leone, and the impact of this experience on international conceptualisations of such reform as well as on international interventions more broadly. The study is the most detailed of its kind, based on a comprehensive analysis of UK engagement in Sierra Leone between 1997 and 2013, including a host of first-hand accounts from key local and international actors. This monograph shows why the UK intervention in Sierra Leone has been a relative success. However, it also questions the sustainability of state-building efforts that are driven by concepts of the liberal state. In Sierra Leone, critical challenges remain, not least in the combination of a particular vision of what a state should look like and the unrealistic expectations of progress on the part of the international community.

Book Rural Housing and Economic Development

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Housing is crucial to the quality of life and wellbeing for individuals and familes, but the availability of adequate or affordable housing also plays a vital role in community economic development. Rural areas face a substantial disadvantage compared to urban areas in regard to housing, and this book explores these issues. Rural Housing and Economic Development includes chapters from nationally known experts from throughout the U.S. to provide insight to help understand and address the difficult housing concerns within rural areas. The chapters cover a variety of issues including housing for rural minorities, the extent of and problems associated with mobile home dwelling, the extent to which affordable rental housing is available in rural areas, the rapidly growing elderly population, and the housing consequences of rapid population and economic growth associated with energy development. The authors not only describe various housing problems, but also suggest policy approaches to more effectively address them. This book will be a vital resource to policy makers at the local, state or national level as they grapple with difficult rural housing problems. Researchers and professionals dealing with housing issues will also benefit from the insights of these experts while the book will also be appropriate for upper level undergraduates or graduate students in courses on housing or economic development.

Book Sexuality in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times

Download or read book Sexuality in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times written by Albrecht Classen and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-12-10 with total page 913 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexuality is one of the most influential factors in human life. The responses to and reflections upon the manifestations of sexuality provide fascinating insights into fundamental aspects of medieval and early-modern culture. This interdisciplinary volume with articles written by social historians, literary historians, musicologists, art historians, and historians of religion and mental-ity demonstrates how fruitful collaborative efforts can be in the exploration of essential features of human society. Practically every aspect of culture both in the Middle Ages and the early modern age was influenced and determined by sexuality, which hardly ever surfaces simply characterized by prurient interests. The treatment of sexuality in literature, chronicles, music, art, legal documents, and in scientific texts illuminates central concerns, anxieties, tensions, needs, fears, and problems in human society throughout times.

Book The Law and Higher Education

Download or read book The Law and Higher Education written by Michael A. Olivas and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 1088 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its third edition, this book reflects the extraordinary growth in "the law of higher education" and the accompanying rise in scholarship and commentary on higher education law and governance. The case selection reflects major themes and issues. To this end, cases with interesting facts but less precedential value, news accounts of fascinating developments, and insights and articles from scholars and practitioners have also been used. The result is a unique book on a rapidly growing area of law and society. "Despite Professor Olivas's caution about making comparisons between this work and the acknowledged standard treatise in the field (William Kaplin's Law and Higher Education), these two volumes should be viewed by attorneys, academicians, and administrators as complementary. Unlike a treatise, the Olivas casebook gives the reader a comprehensive array of cases and court decisions on these subjects. Professor Olivas writes overviews to provide contextual detail and history... [Chapter 2 is] an excellent example of the prudent use of cases... [Chapter 3] contains a panoply of material taken from a variety of sources about fascinating episodes, disputes, and court cases... This is rich material..." -- Bimonthly Review of Law Books, on the first edition"The Law and Higher Education... has become not merely a reference, but an archive in its own right." -- Scott Chafin, Media Reviews, on the second edition"In both the casebook and the teachers' manual, the author's sense of humor, knowledge of popular culture, and breadth of knowledge about higher education come out clearly and loudly. Olivas is an attorney who knows both administrative practice and the law and is effectively able to pass that knowledge on to his readers." -- NASPA Journal, 2007
