The theme of this collection of twenty-one essays, 'Baptists and Others', includes relations with other Christians and with other institutions and movements. What, the authors ask, has been the Baptist experience of engaging with different groups and developments? The theme has been explored by means of case studies, some of which are very specific in time and place while others cover long periods and more than one country. In the first half the contents are arranged by period. The first section examines early Baptists, the second nineteenth-century Baptists in Britain and America and the third Baptists in the twentieth century. The second half turns to various parts of the world. There is a section on Australia, another on New Zealand and a third on Asia and Africa. The overall picture is one of a complicated series of relationships as Baptists defined themselves as different from other bodies and yet, especially in the twentieth century, tried to co-operate in mission and ecumenical endeavour. 'Baptists are often regarded as enthusiastic separatists and unenthusiastic ecumenists. These essays, based on hard evidence rather than passing impressions, are a necessary correction to superficial prejudices and show the reality to be much more complex and nuanced, as well as varied over time and place. The book is a smorgasbord of delights. True religion engages with society to alleviate suffering and bring transformation. In other words, religious violence is an obscenity, a deviation from the true character of religion. Martin Luther's Theology of Two Kingdoms in Buddhist and Christian Communities examines the principle of separation between religion and politics in the context of both Buddhist and Christian communities. In predominantly Buddhist contexts such as Myanmar, where a reciprocal relationship between religion and politics is expected, separation is not effective. Attempts by Christians to separate religion and politics cause the church to run away from tyranny and follow the state with blind obedience. Martin Luther’s model of two distinct but interconnected systems for religion and politics creates space for each institution to give constructive advice and criticism to the other for the health of all human beings.

Book excerpt: The thesis explores and understands certain perspectives of monastic practices which are common to both traditions of Myanmar Buddhism and the Latin Catholic Church with the emphasis of monastic way of life in preparation for interreligious dialogue between the Buddhists and Christians in Myanmar. This thesis identifies common monastic practices from both Buddhism and Latin Catholic traditions in order to establish the venue where the two parties could meet and dialogue for common interests particularly on social projects. Typically, the purpose of qualitative inquiry is to identify and understand common themes from both traditions, essentially establishing a foundation for future quantitative encounter among the faiths of different religion in Myanmar. Monastic traditions in both Buddhism and Latin Catholic Church have been so significant for the quest for perfection. Although the two traditions have different convictions about the truth of faith, both traditions have certain monastic practices of purification of the mind or conversion of the heart through meditation or contemplation in the aspiration for perfection. Monastic life from both traditions is an exemplary integration of wisdom and compassion, contemplation and action. Christian interpretation of this concept is summed up as "love of God and love of neighbor". The thesis is divided into two parts; the first part looks at the historical development of monastic practice beginning from the nature and of its purpose from both Buddhism and Christianity. The second part identifies the common elements of monastic practices from both traditions. These common elements of monastic practices can establish a solid foundation for the launching of an interreligious dialogue, albeit modest at the outset between Myanmar Buddhism and the Latin Catholic Church for the sake of the common good in the country.
