Book excerpt: Lodgepole pine seedlings must form associations with ectomycorrhizal fungi in order to grow normally under field conditions. The study reported in this memo quantifies the effect of two site preparations (mechanical screefing and ground chemical application) on the diversity and types of such fungi at a lodgepole pine site in the Lillooet Forest District of British Columbia. Seedling root tips were examined by microscope and richness and diversity indices were used to describe and compare the ectomycorrhizal communities from the different treatments over a three year period (1992-94).
