Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So Vast the Prison is the double-threaded story of a modern, educated Algerian woman existing in a man's society, and, not surprisingly, living a life of contradictions. Djebar, too, tackles cross-cultural issues just by writing in French of an Arab society (the actual act of writing contrasting with the strong oral traditions of the indigenous culture), as a woman who has seen revolution in a now post-colonial country, and as an Algerian living in exile. In this new novel, Djebar brilliantly plays these contradictions against the bloody history of Carthage, a great civilization the Berbers were once compared to, and makes it both a tribute to the loss of Berber culture and a meeting-point of culture and language. As the story of one woman's experience in Algeria, it is a private tale, but one embedded in a vast history. A radically singular voice in the world of literature, Assia Djebar's work ultimately reaches beyond the particulars of Algeria to embrace, in stark yet sensuous language, the universal themes of violence, intimacy, ostracism, victimization, and exile.

Book Jorge Semprun

Download or read book Jorge Semprun written by Ursula Tidd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Spanish Communist exile and Francophone Holocaust writer Jorge Semprun (1923-) is a major contributor to contemporary debates on the politics and ethics of remembering the Franco era, Communism and the Holocaust in French, Spanish and broader European contexts. His sophisticated literary testimonies have become landmark texts not least for their commitment to represent the lived experience of history. In this first detailed study in English of Jorge Semprun's writing, Ursula Tidd shows how Semprun explores the parameters of self-writing as an address to the other in a richly intertextual corpus which weaves together history, fiction and auto/bio/thanatography, and gives voice to the traumatic experiences of geographical and political exile and concentration camp internment. Ursula Tidd is Senior Lecturer in French Studies at the University of Manchester, UK."

Book Spatial and Temporal Dimensions for Legal History

Download or read book Spatial and Temporal Dimensions for Legal History written by Massimo Meccarelli and published by Max Planck Institute for European Legal History. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: http://dx.doi.org/10.12946/gplh6http://www.epubli.de/shop/buch/53894"The spatiotemporal conjunction is a fundamental aspect of the juridical reflection on the historicity of law. Despite the fact that it seems to represent an issue directly connected with the question of where legal history is heading today, it still has not been the object of a focused inquiry. Against this background, the book’s proposal consists in rethinking key confluences related to this problem in order to provide coordinates for a collective understanding and dialogue. The aim of this volume, however, is not to offer abstract methodological considerations, but rather to rely both on concrete studies, out of which a reflection on this conjunction emerges, as well as on the reconstruction of certain research lines featuring a spatiotemporal component. This analytical approach makes a contribution by providing some suggestions for the employment of space and time as coordinates for legal history. Indeed, contrary to those historiographical attitudes reflecting a monistic conception of space and time (as well as a Eurocentric approach), the book emphasises the need for a delocalized global perspective. In general terms, the essays collected in this book intend to take into account the multiplicity of the spatiotemporal confines, the flexibility of those instruments that serve to create chronologies and scenarios, as well as certain processes of adaptation of law to different times and into different spaces. The spatiotemporal dynamism enables historians not only to detect new perspectives and dimensions in foregone themes, but also to achieve new and compelling interpretations of legal history. As far as the relationship between space and law is concerned, the book analyses experiences in which space operates as a determining factor of law, e.g. in terms of a field of action for law. Moreover, it outlines the attempted scales of spatiality in order to develop legal historical research. With reference to the connection between time and law, the volume sketches the possibility of considering the factor of time, not just as a descriptive tool, but as an ascriptive moment (quasi an inner feature) of a legal problem, thus making it possible to appreciate the synchronic aspects of the ‘juridical experience’. As a whole, the volume aims to present spatiotemporality as a challenge for legal history. Indeed, reassessing the value of the spatiotemporal coordinates for legal history implies thinking through both the thematic and methodological boundaries of the discipline."

Book Heidegger and the Political

Download or read book Heidegger and the Political written by Miguel de Beistegui and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies of Heidegger's involvement with National Socialism have often presented Heidegger's philosophy as a forerunner to his political involvement. This has occured often to the detriment of the highly complex nature of Heidegger's relation to the political. Heidegger and the Political redresses this imbalance and is one of the first books to critically assess Heidegger's relation to politics and his conception of the political. Miguel de Beistegui shows how we must question why the political is so often displaced in Heidegger's writings rather than read the political into Heidegger. Exploring Heidegger's ontology where politics takes place after a forgetting of Being and his wish to think a site more originary and primordial than politics, Heidegger and the Political considers what some of Heidegger's key motifs - his emphasis on lost origins, his discussions of Holderlin's poetry, his writing on technology and the ancient Greek polis - may tell us about Heidegger's relation to the political. Miguel de Beistegui also engages with the very risks implicit in Heidegger's denial of the political and how this opens up the question of the risk of thinking itself. Heidegger and the Political is essential reading for students of philosophy and politics and all those interested in the question of the political today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yale French Studies 142 explores the contemporary relevance of an alternative strand of feminism as theorized by Monique Wittig This volume of Yale French Studies foregrounds Monique Wittig (1935-2003), a writer who left France to live and teach in the United States, in a diverse range of multidisciplinary conversations--in literary studies, history, and gender and sexuality studies--to demonstrate how Wittig's theoretical and literary work remains an indispensable resource for thinking and creating in the twenty-first century. Editors Morgane Cadieu and Annabel L. Kim flip the "materialist lesbianism" that Wittig's collection of essays, The Straight Mind, centers and describes as being the core of Wittig's work to deal instead with "lesbian materialism," thereby making "lesbian" the method and "materialism" the object and allowing Wittig's work to realize its full range. The volume reinterrogates the official historiography of French materialist feminism; expands the intellectual framework within which Wittig's work is usually considered; insists on the language-centric materialism that emerges from Wittig's writing as a way of joining the political with the literary; and attends to the way this literary material inspires material responses and creations within the plastic arts. Underlying the entire volume is a keen sense of the materiality of Wittig's archives, housed at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University, as a site of lesbian thought in Wittig's radical sense of the term: a fugitive positionality.
