Book Magnetohydrodynamic Stability of Tokamaks

Download or read book Magnetohydrodynamic Stability of Tokamaks written by Hartmut Zohm and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-11-24 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book bridges the gap between general plasma physics lectures and the real world problems in MHD stability. In order to support the understanding of concepts and their implication, it refers to real world problems such as toroidal mode coupling or nonlinear evolution in a conceptual and phenomenological approach. Detailed mathematical treatment will involve classical linear stability analysis and an outline of more recent concepts such as the ballooning formalism. The book is based on lectures that the author has given to Master and PhD students in Fusion Plasma Physics. Due its strong link to experimental results in MHD instabilities, the book is also of use to senior researchers in the field, i.e. experimental physicists and engineers in fusion reactor science. The volume is organized in three parts. It starts with an introduction to the MHD equations, a section on toroidal equilibrium (tokamak and stellarator), and on linear stability analysis. Starting from there, the ideal MHD stability of the tokamak configuration will be treated in the second part which is subdivided into current driven and pressure driven MHD. This includes many examples with reference to experimental results for important MHD instabilities such as kinks and their transformation to RWMs, infernal modes, peeling modes, ballooning modes and their relation to ELMs. Finally the coverage is completed by a chapter on resistive stability explaining reconnection and island formation. Again, examples from recent tokamak MHD such as sawteeth, CTMs, NTMs and their relation to disruptions are extensively discussed.

Book Plasma Physics An Introductory Course

Download or read book Plasma Physics An Introductory Course written by R. O. Dendy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-02-24 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the last thirty years, international summer schools in plasma physics have been held at Culham Laboratory, site of the Joint European Torus fusion project. This book has been developed from lectures given at these schools, and provides a wide-ranging introduction to the subject. The first few chapters deal with the fundamentals of plasma physics. In subsequent chapters, the applications and properties of man-made and naturally occurring plasmas are discussed. In addition, there are chapters devoted to general phenomena such as turbulence and chaos. The computational techniques employed in modelling plasma behaviour are also described. Since no prior knowledge of plasma physics is assumed, this book will act as an ideal introduction to the subject for final year undergraduates and beginning graduate students in physics, astronomy, mathematics and engineering.

Book Lower Hybrid Current Drive Experiments in the HT 7 Tokamak

Download or read book Lower Hybrid Current Drive Experiments in the HT 7 Tokamak written by Zhongyong Chen and published by Nova Novinka. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The achievement of steady state operation and long pulse is one of the major challenges in the tokamak plasmas. One of the most effective means to sustain tokamak steady state operation is non-inductive current drive (NICD) by lower hybrid (LH) wave. Lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) as an effective NICD tool has been demonstrated in many tokamaks. LHCD is used to modify the plasma current profile to improve the MHD stability, or used in conjunction with ion Bernstein wave (IBW) to achieve high performance discharge. The achievement of high current drive efficiency is of primary importance since it determines the required power that must be recycled to sustain the plasma current. This book discusses the lower-hybrid current drive experiences currently being done in regards to HT-7 tokamaks.

Book Fast Wave Heating and Current Drive in Tokamak Plasmas with Negative Central Shear

Download or read book Fast Wave Heating and Current Drive in Tokamak Plasmas with Negative Central Shear written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fast waves provide an excellent tool for heating electrons and driving current in the central region of tokamak plasmas. In this paper, we report the use of centrally peaked electron heating and current drive to study transport in plasmas with negative central shear (NCS). Tokamak plasmas with NCS offer the potential of reduced energy transport and improved MHD stability properties, but will require non-inductive current drive to maintain the required current profiles. Fast waves, combined with neutral beam injection, provide the capability to change the central current density evolution and independently vary {ital T{sub e}}, and {ital T{sub i}} for transport studies in these plasmas. Electron heating also reduces the collisional heat exchange between electrons and ions and reduces the power deposition from neutral beams into electrons, thus improving the certainty in the estimate of the electron heating. The first part of this paper analyzes electron and ion heat transport in the L-mode phase of NCS plasmas as the current profile resistively evolves. The second part of the paper discusses the changes that occur in electron as well as ion energy transport in this phase of improved core confinement associated with NCS.

Book Driven Rotation Self Generated Flow and Momentum Transport in Tokamak Plasmas

Download or read book Driven Rotation Self Generated Flow and Momentum Transport in Tokamak Plasmas written by John Rice and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-13 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive look at the state of the art of externally driven and self-generated rotation as well as momentum transport in tokamak plasmas. In addition to recent developments, the book includes a review of rotation measurement techniques, measurements of directly and indirectly driven rotation, momentum sinks, self-generated flow, and momentum transport. These results are presented alongside summaries of prevailing theory and are compared to predictions, bringing together both experimental and theoretical perspectives for a broad look at the field. Both researchers and graduate students in the field of plasma physics will find this book to be a useful reference. Although there is an emphasis on tokamaks, a number of the concepts are also relevant to other configurations.
