Book Corpus

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jean-Luc Nancy
  • Publisher : Fordham Univ Press
  • Release : 2009-08-25
  • ISBN : 0823229637
  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book Corpus written by Jean-Luc Nancy and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2009-08-25 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have we thought “the body”? How can we think it anew? The body of mortal creatures, the body politic, the body of letters and of laws, the “mystical body of Christ”—all these (and others) are incorporated in the word Corpus, the title and topic of Jean-Luc Nancy’s masterwork. Corpus is a work of literary force at once phenomenological, sociological, theological, and philosophical in its multiple orientations and approaches. In thirty-six brief sections, Nancy offers us at once an encyclopedia and a polemical program—reviewing classical takes on the “corpus” from Plato, Aristotle, and Saint Paul to Descartes, Hegel, Husserl, and Freud, while demonstrating that the mutations (technological, biological, and political) of our own culture have given rise to the need for a new understanding of the body. He not only tells the story of this cultural change but also explores the promise and responsibilities that such a new understanding entails. The long-awaited English translation is a bold, bravura rendering. To the title essay are added five closely related recent pieces—including a commentary by Antonia Birnbaum—dedicated in large part to the legacy of the “mind-body problem” formulated by Descartes and the challenge it poses to rethinking the ancient problems of the corpus. The last and most poignant of these essays is “The Intruder,” Nancy’s philosophical meditation on his heart transplant. The book also serves as the opening move in Nancy’s larger project called “The deconstruction of Christianity.”

Book Performative Bodies Hybrid Tongues

Download or read book Performative Bodies Hybrid Tongues written by Julian Vigo and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reconsiders the body in literature and makes a case for visual representation as a physical and gesticulative domain for rethinking the constructions of gender, nationalism and sexuality. Examining literary production from the eleventh century until the present, the author argues that the body in contemporary North Africa and Latin America serves as a physical and symbolic terrain upon which sexual, textual, national, racial and linguistic identities are vectored and through which postcolonial and hegemonic antagonisms of power and identity are resolved. Rather than embracing «third world» identity as a residual repository of western thought, colonization and linguistic infusion, the author suggests that the paradigm of cultural identity in the Maghreb and Latin America is best understood through an examination of the emergent corporeal articulations of subjectivity prevalent in these literatures and visual cultures. The text examines the body as a critical landscape through which the various discourses of nationhood, gender and sexuality converge in order to construct a reading of the social that neither amasses subjectivity as singular under the rubric of the «third world», nor couches the other within static notions of gendered, sexual or racial identities.

Download or read book Th orie de la communication et thique relationnelle Collection forme et sens written by FOURNOUT Olivier and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book The Complete Plays of Oscar Wilde written by Oscar Wilde and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 844 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oscar Wilde, a prominent figure in the Victorian literary scene, showcases his wit and satire in 'The Complete Plays of Oscar Wilde'. This collection includes famous works such as 'The Importance of Being Earnest' and 'An Ideal Husband'. Wilde's plays are known for their sharp social commentary, clever wordplay, and exploration of complex themes such as identity and morality. The plays are a reflection of the author's unique style, blending comedy with dark undertones, making them timeless pieces of literature that continue to resonate with audiences today. Oscar Wilde's background as a playwright, poet, and novelist heavily influenced the creation of these plays. His personal experiences and observations of society are evident throughout the collection, as he uses his platform to challenge conventions and expose the hypocrisies of Victorian society. Wilde's flamboyant personality and controversial reputation also shaped his writing, adding depth and complexity to his characters and plotlines. I highly recommend 'The Complete Plays of Oscar Wilde' to readers who appreciate sharp wit, social commentary, and thought-provoking drama. Wilde's works continue to captivate audiences with their timeless relevance and enduring charm, making this collection a must-read for any lover of classic literature.

Book Cinepoems and Others

  • Publisher : New York Review of Books
  • Release : 2016-05-17

Download or read book Cinepoems and Others written by Benjamin Fondane and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2016-05-17 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benjamin Fondane was that rarest of poets: an experimental formalist with a powerful lyric poetic voice; a renegade surrealist who was also a highly original existential philosopher; a self-consciously Jewish poet of diaspora and loss, whose last manuscripts made it out of Drancy in 1944 just before his deportation to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where he was murdered, yet whose poetry speaks of an overflowing plenitude. This bilingual selection is the first volume of Fondane’s poetry to appear in English, and it includes a broad sample of his work, from the coruscating and comic cinepoems of his surrealist years, to philosophical meditations, to poems that in their secular and mystical Judaism confront the historical calamity—and imaginative triumph—of European Jewry.

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 90 pages

Download or read book Salom written by Oscar Wilde and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-11-13 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Salome is a tragedy by Oscar Wilde an it tells the Biblical story of Salome, stepdaughter of the tetrarch Herod Antipas, who, to her stepfather's dismay but to the delight of her mother Herodias, requests the head of Jokanaan (John the Baptist) on a silver platter as a reward for dancing the dance of the seven veils. Wilde wrote Salome in French and translated it to English several years later. The play was refused a license by the Lord Chamberlain, since it was illegal to depict biblical characters. It was eventually performed in Paris, but the ban in England stood for almost forty years. This edition contains both French and English version of the play.
