Thomson Frasers, "Giants in the Wilderness," and two childrens theater dramas, MacKenzie Louise Coffmans, "Forest Hideout," and Rebekah Lovat Frasers "The Tree and the Village." Harold Wood, education chairman for the environmentally-focused Sierra Club, was the inspiration behind the book. He contacted G. Thomson Fraser about her play, "Giants in the Wilderness and suggested that it be published, along with childrens dramas with an environmental theme. "Giants in the Wilderness" features John Muir, the Scottish naturalist and founder of the Sierra Club, and his role in the birth of the environmental movement in the late 19th century. "Wilderness" contains a Forestry Chautauqua Prologue and post-play Epilogue by Joseph K. Smith which can be used to open a discussion with the audience. The drama was funded by a grant from the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities, a state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and matching funds from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Managements Conservation Trust Fund. "Wilderness" toured as part of the 1997 Centennial Celebration of the Massachusetts State Forest and Park System. Drama critic Richard Duckett, writing for the Worcester (MA) Telegram and Gazette, characterized "Wilderness" as a history lesson. "By 1896, the destruction of Americas forest wilderness had become so rampant many people believed that unless something was done soon, there wouldnt be any wilderness left... Three naturalists - John Muir, Charles Sprague Sargent and Gifford Pinchot - had divergent opinions on the best way to save them." MacKenzie Louise Coffmans childrens theater piece, "Forest Hideout" is the story of two children, a brother and sister, who take matters into their own hands to save the family farm. Coffman is a fifth grade student in Western Massachusetts. A televised production of her play is planned for the Summer 2009 with Coffman playing the role of Isabel. Rebekah Lovat Frasers "The Tree and the Village" is an environmentally instructive fable, a mythological saga that engages the audience and is a visual feast for children of all ages. Lovat Fraser is a graduate in Film Studies from Yale University and mother of MacKenzie. In the Preface to EcoTheater for the Global Village, G. Thomson Fraser observes, "We humans have taken center stage in a worldwide drama to preserve the planet that only the gods of antiquity might find amusing... Theater is now challenged to take up environmental global concerns, to serve as a tool for our continued survival." Playwright G. Thomson Fraser is a professor, journalist, poet and novelist. Her nonfiction novel, "In the Claw of the Tiger," which is based on the true story of a survivor of the Bataan Death March and POW camps in the Philippines and Japan, was published in 2007. Fraser holds a BA in Theater and Communications and an MFA in Playwriting .

Using cultural and environmental history, seven chapters interrogate key moments in American theater and American environmentalism over the course of the twentieth century in the United States. It focuses, in particular, on how drama has represented environmental injustice and how inequality has become part of the American environmental landscape. As the first book-length ecocritical study of American theater, Earth Matters examines both familiar dramas and lesser-known grassroots plays in an effort to show that theater can be a powerful force for social change from frontier drama of the late nineteenth century to the eco-theater movement. This book argues that theater has always and already been part of the history of environmental ideas and action in the United States. Earth Matters also maps the rise of an ecocritical thought and eco-theater practice – what the author calls ecodramaturgy – showing how theater has informed environmental perceptions and policies. Through key plays and productions, it identifies strategies for artists who want their work to contribute to cultural transformation in the face of climate change.

Thomson Fraser, based on the true story of Massachusetts resident, Franklin "Porky" LaCoste, a survivor of the Bataan Death March and POW camps in the Philippines and Japan. Porky joined the Army Air Corps in October 1940 with six high school buddies out for a good time, adventure, and an escape from their Depression-era hometowns. Determined to go to Hawaii and the Philippines, they live a life straight out of their fantasies - until December 7, 1941 changed their lives forever when Japan attacked Hawaii and soon afterwards U.S. outposts in the Philippines. Like a grown-up Tom Sawyer thrust into the brutal machinations of a world at war, Porky survives adventure after adventure often with a trusted companion by his side. Porky perseveres through the Battle of Bataan and the Death March - where thousands die - as well as in the malaria and dysentery infested POW Camps O'Donnell and Cabanatuan. He is pitched into a Hell Ship bound for Japan and lives the danger plagued existence of a miner living in rat infested, near starvation conditions. His spunk and determination often land him in trouble. (At one point he is court-martialed at Imperial Army Headquarters in Tokyo.) He survives through native optimism, gut instinct, an ability to accept life as he finds it, but most of all, because of an unquenchable desire to help those around him. Along with suffering at the hands of enemy forces, to his surprise Porky is helped on occasion by an unlikely source - the enemy. Later, in a dramatic twist of fate, while working at the copper mines in Ashio, Japan, Porky saves the life of the 4-year old son and only child of one of the village guards which earns him the respect of friend and foe alike. In the Claw of the Tiger contains 150 photos, many of which had been stored away for six decades. The three part narrative reads like a novel and feels like a docudrama, complete with historical references and candid shots of the friends together, National Archive, Department of Defense, Library of Congress and other photos and illustrations. Remarkably, out of the seven friends who joined the service and plotted and planned to stick together, five survived the ordeal. G. Thomson Fraser holds degrees in theater/playwriting and communications. She is a former editor of a weekly news magazine, an investigative journalist, exhibits developer, environmental writer and former aide to a state senator. She has served both as college staff and faculty. During the five years Fraser spent interviewing Franklin "Porky" LaCoste, parts of the narrative were developed through improvisational theater techniques designed to evoke intimate details as well as the dramatic elements of the story. Many more years were spent in extensive research of historical events and details of time and place. The end result is an intimate portrayal of coming-of-age in the midst of the Pacific Theater, during one of the greatest struggles of the 20th century. Trapped in a war for which he and the country were ill-prepared, In the Claw of the Tiger is a remarkable tale of courage, hope, and reconciliation in the midst of horror.

Facility contamination and environmental degradation, as well as the accident vulnerable facilities and equipment, are a result of weapons development, testing, and production. Although the countries face similar issues from similar activities, important differences in waste management practices make the potential environmental and health risks of more immediate concern in the FSU and Eastern Europe. In the West, most nuclear and chemical waste is stored in known contained locations, while in the East, much of the equivalent material is unconfined, contaminating the environment. In the past decade, the U.S. started to address and remediate these Cold War legacies. Costs have been very high, and the projected cost estimates for total cleanup are still increasing. Currently in Russia, the resources for starting such major activities continue to be unavailable.

Badghyz Natural Reserve, established in 1941, became a refuge for the last existing population of the Turkmen onager (Equus hemionus onager) and a unique pistachio woodland. A new generation oflocal Turkmen scientists, many of whom were trained by the Russian researchers in the graduate schools of Moscow and Leningrad arose from the 1930s through the 1950s. The Turkmen Academy of Sciences and its journal, Proceedings (including the monthly biological series), served to record the results of diverse biological studies in the republic. While basic science in the Middle Asian republics rather gained from the Russian "colonial" influence, natural resources, in contrast, were severely damaged by the Soviet way of handling the economy and social issues. Severe environmental problems have been inherited by the now independent Turkmenistan, including overgrazed desert pastures, deforested mountains, depleted water resources, accumulated pesticides in cotton fields, declining populations of endangered species of animals and plants, and - worst of al- progressing, human-caused desertification (Kharin this volume). In order to approach a solution to these problems, scientists and officials in the republic will need the close attention and help of the international scientific community.
