Download or read book Food Economy in War Time Classic Reprint written by T. B. WOOD and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Food Economy in War Time But to all classes, even to the wealthy, it is now more important than it would be under ordinary circumstances to watch the markets. If an article of food of which the price is falling (or rising but slowly) be purchased rather than a similar or comparable article of which the \price is quickly rising, the supply and consumption of our various foodstuffs will be more equably adjusted, and this circumstance will in itself make for national economy. But as we have said those who are prepared to make altera tions in their consumption of food in order to conform with the urgent national needs of the moment may require information as to how far such alterations, whether of degree or of kind, can be made without danger to health and efficiency. Before presenting tables which are intended to show the relative cost of equivalent nutritive values when purchased in the form of different foods, we give therefore a brief account of the function of food in general and of the special importance of its individual constituents. Book The Economy of Food

Download or read book The Economy of Food written by J. Alan Murray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Economy of Food: A Popular Treatise on Nutrition, Food and Diet The interest is largely centered upon the pecuniary aspects of the subject. The prices quoted are, in most cases, those of London stores. They are, of course, liable to fluctuation; but they represent, as nearly as could be ascertained, the average prices prevailing in different parts of the country. All calculations in which prices are involved are explained in detail and the reader can therefore adjust any possible differences due to this cause. In regard to the method of estimating the relative pecuniary values of foods which the author has ventured to propound in Chapter XIV, there may be room for some difference of opinion. The object might, perhaps, have been achieved by other means but most of the methods hitherto adopted have proved unsatisfactory to the class of reader chiefly concerned. The calculated results given in the tables will be found easily intelligible and convenient in form. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Economy Cook Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book Economy Cook Book Classic Reprint written by Maria McIlvaine Gillmore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economy Cook Book This book is designed to take the place among recipe books that the Ford does among automobiles. It is simple, practical, economical. But back of any recipe book must come intelligent planning of the meals, for at best recipes can only be the method of making foods palatable. Much depends upon arranging menus to pro mote the greatest degree of growth and health. In the average family which consists of adults and children both groups must be considered, for upon the proper feeding of its future citizens depends the fu ture power of our Nation. Children require more food of the body-building class than grown people; more food containing protein, as meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and milk, which is most important of all. If fresh milk is not available condensed or evaporated milk should be substituted. Adults after forty require little meat. Once a day is often more than enough. Much acute indigestion, auto-intoxication, etc., would be avoided by a diet con sisting principally of meat substitutes, vegetables, and lighter foods. Of course those who lead a sedentary life require less substantial food and a. Smaller quantity of it than those who are engaged in muscular occupa tion. And with the preper planning should go regularity of serving, the same meals at the same time each day, the lighter meal at night, thorough mastication of the food, a cheerful atmosphere. Book Analysis and Cost of Ready to Serve Foods

Download or read book Analysis and Cost of Ready to Serve Foods written by Frank Curtis Gephart and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Analysis and Cost of Ready-to-Serve Foods: A Study in Food Economics A celebrated school mistress once asked that a book be written which would tell her what apple sauce was Without introducing the terms protein, carbohydrate and fat. Alas, that is impossible. It would be like teaching architecture without mentioning brick, gran ite and marble! But the knowledge IS not recondite. Protein is the characteristic solid constituent of muscle. The pro tein framework is essential for the manifestation of those properties whose aggregate is called life. And besides this, water and salts enter into the organization of the living particles. These salts are as varied as are those of the sea water and they are essential to living things. In vertebrates, salts are further used to build the larger framework of the bones. When various molecules of protein are united in a certain definite order with water and salts, life is possible. If the definite order is disturbed, death results. Life depends on the arrangement Of the particles. One recalls the story of the Yankee who, during the win ter months, sold a sure cure for potato bugs with the caution not to be opened till wanted for use and with the promise of instructions for use inside the package. 'in the summer time, on opening the package the farmer found two small cubes with the directions place the potato bug on one Cube and press firmly with the other. Death not only takes place through such disarrangement of the particles, but also it may follow on the in uence of a poison which pre vents the proper functioning of the living thing. Book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint

Download or read book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint written by German Woodhead and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Book The Food Question Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Food Question Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Food Question This book was planned before Food Conservation was by the mass considered seriously. The writers of the various articles are thoroughly qualified to speak where they have spoken. They are practical, conscientious, Christian, and have at heart the best in the needs of humanity. Every one strikes a major chord in the song of healthful, economical living. The recipes are from the author of "Food and Cookery," who has had a score of years' experience in every station and phase of the preparation of food, under French, English, German, and Spanish chefs. He has been second cook in the Calumet Club of Chicago, the California Club, Los Angeles, and in many leading hotels in various cities. For ten years, he has given his best thought and study to the preparation of the best in food, scientific, palatable, wholesome, and economic, most of this time in the Sanitarium and College of Medical Missionaries, Loma Linda, California. Special attention is called to the valuable tables of Food Elements, and to the newly demonstrated values of vita-mines and the substances which destroy them. We are grateful for the kind word spoken by Dr. Ray Lyman Wilbur, president of Stanford University, and first assistant to Mr. Hoover in the Federal Food Administration Department; also for the help and suggestions of Dr. Newton Evans, president of the College of Medical Evangelists, of Loma Linda, California. The little book will, we believe, not only meet present needs, but be a safe counselor in the years to come.
