Book Automation The Future of Weed Control in Cropping Systems

Download or read book Automation The Future of Weed Control in Cropping Systems written by Stephen L. Young and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technology is rapidly advancing in all areas of society, including agriculture. In both conventional and organic systems, there is a need to apply technology beyond our current approach to improve the efficiency and economics of management. Weeds, in particular, have been part of cropping systems for centuries often being ranked as the number one production cost. Now, public demand for a sustainably grown product has created economic incentives for producers to improve their practices, yet the development of advanced weed control tools beyond biotech has lagged behind. An opportunity has been created for engineers and weed scientists to pool their knowledge and work together to ‘fill the gap’ in managing weeds in crops. Never before has there been such pressure to produce more with less in order to sustain our economies and environments. This book is the first to provide a radically new approach to weed management that could change cropping systems both now and in the future.

Book Integrated Weed Management for Sustainable Agriculture

Download or read book Integrated Weed Management for Sustainable Agriculture written by Robert Zimdahl and published by Burleigh Dodds Series in Agric. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weeds remain a major obstacle to improved yields in agriculture. At the same time, established methods of control are being undermined by problems such as herbicide resistance. This major collection reviews key developments in integrated weed management (IWM) to manage weeds more sustainably.

Book Sugar Beet Cultivation Management and Processing

Download or read book Sugar Beet Cultivation Management and Processing written by Varucha Misra and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-21 with total page 1024 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of advancements and achievements in the field of sugar beet cultivation. It covers recent research and up-to-date information on this crop. It discusses essential aspects for high production and good yield, development and crop management, such as origin, breeding, seed production, physiology, pathology, entomology, biotechnology, and post-harvest technology. Sugar beet is known as an alternative crop for sugar production. A versatile crop having numerous uses, besides being raw material for sugar production, its molasses contain high amount of betaine which is used as a feed supplement. Due to its value profile it has attracted the millers and farmers alike. This book is of interest to teachers, researchers, agriculture scientists, capacity builders and policymakers. Also the book serves as additional reading material for graduate students of agriculture, forestry, ecology and soil science. National and international agricultural scientists, policy makers will also find this to be a useful read.

Book Weed Control Economics

Download or read book Weed Control Economics written by Bruce Archibald Auld and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM THE PREFACE: Weeds reduce agricultural output and/or add to the costs of production and are therefore important economically. Moreover weed research scientists, administrators, and farmers make decisions about allocating resources (i.e. make economic decisions) every day. Weed control and economics are inseparable in an agricultural production context and the economic effects of weeds are diverse and complex. In this book we have endeavoured to present a broad but penetrating view of the impact of weeds and assessment of their control. The book is aimed to provide agricultural scientists, administrators, advisors, and students with a greater appreciation of the economic impact of weeds and of the economic assessment of weed control strategies and methods. For agricultural economists, the book will provide an agronomic background and an economic framework for tackling issues in weed control and research.

Download or read book Weed Biology and Management written by Inderjit and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weeds hold an enigmatic and sometimes-controversial place in agriculture, where they are generally reviled, grudgingly tolerated, and occasionally admired. In most cases, growers make considerable effort to reduce the negative economic impact of weeds because they compete with crops for resources and hinder field operations, thereby affecting crop productivity and quality, and ultimately the sustainability of agriculture. Weed control in production agriculture is commonly achieved through the integration of chemical, biological, and mechanical management methods. Chemicals (herbicides) usually inhibit the growth and establishment of weed plants by interfering with various physiological and biochemical pathways. Biological methods include crop competition, smother crops, rotation crops, and allelopathy, as well as specific insect predators and plant pathogens. Mechanical methods encompass an array of tools from short handled hoes to sophisticated video-guided robotic machines. Integrating these technologies, in order to relieve the negative impacts of weeds on crop production in a way that allows growers to optimize profits and preserve human health and the environment, is the science of weed management.
