Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economics for High Schools and Academies The public high school has become a people's college whose chief purpose is the preparation for citizenship. As the politics of the modern state has much to do with economics, no one could have an ordinary preparation for citizenship without at least a foundation in the elementary principles of the science of economics. Many educators have urged that the subject is too difficult for the secondary school curriculum, and therefore it should be reserved for university work. It is, however, the experience and observation of the writer of the present volume that economics, if properly presented, is as readily handled as any other subject found in the senior year of the well-equipped high school. Moreover, because only a small number of their graduates continue work in the university, it is essential that it be taught, if the school is to fulfill its great purpose of preparing its pupils for citizenship. True it is that the science of economics cannot be mastered in the high school; but what subject is mastered there? It is a mistake to exclude those subjects from instruction which are best calculated to prepare for citizenship and the conduct of life. Abstract theories and discus sions have been avoided, while the workings of indus trial society have been emphasized. With these purposes in view, the first part of the book is devoted to a brief survey of the evolution of industrial society, and the second part gives the ordinary principles of economics in their simplest form with their application to modern industrial society. The last part treats of the relation of private economics to public economics and of the government control of industries. Book excerpt: Orthodox economics operates within a hypothesized world of perfect competition in which perfect consumers and firms act to bring about supposedly optimal outcomes. The discrepancies between this model and the reality it claims to address are then attributed to particular imperfections in reality itself. Most heterodox economists seize on this fact and insist that the world is characterized by imperfect competition. But this only ties them to the notion of perfect competition, which remains as their point of departure and base of comparison. There is no imperfection without perfection. In Capitalism, Anwar Shaikh takes a different approach. He demonstrates that most of the central propositions of economic analysis can be derived without any reference to standard devices such as hyperrationality, optimization, perfect competition, perfect information, representative agents, or so-called rational expectations. This perspective allows him to look afresh at virtually all the elements of economic analysis: the laws of demand and supply, the determination of wage and profit rates, technological change, relative prices, interest rates, bond and equity prices, exchange rates, terms and balance of trade, growth, unemployment, inflation, and long booms culminating in recurrent general crises. In every case, Shaikh's innovative theory is applied to modern empirical patterns and contrasted with neoclassical, Keynesian, and Post-Keynesian approaches to the same issues. Shaikh's object of analysis is the economics of capitalism, and he explores the subject in this expansive light. This is how the classical economists, as well as Keynes and Kalecki, approached the issue. Anyone interested in capitalism and economics in general can gain a wealth of knowledge from this ground-breaking text.

Book The Economics of Higher Education in the United States

Download or read book The Economics of Higher Education in the United States written by Thomas Adam and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-27 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Economics of Higher Education in the United States, editors Thomas Adam and A. Burcu Bayram have assembled five essays, adapted from the fifty-second annual Walter Prescott Webb Memorial Lecture Series, that focus on the increasing cost of college—a topic that causes great anxiety among students, parents, faculty, administrators, legislators, and taxpayers. Essays focus on the funding of colleges, the funding of professional schools, and the provision of scholarships and student loans for undergraduate students to reveal the impact of money on the structure of institutions of higher education and the organization of colleges. The cost of higher education has risen dramatically as both states and the federal government have significantly lowered their contributions to offset that cost. With rising tuition and cost of living—on top of a growing student population—too many graduates find themselves in financial trouble after earning their undergraduate degree. Mounting student debt prevents an increasing number of young professionals from embarking on the very life for which their education was supposed to prepare them. How have we come from a political environment in which higher education was perceived as a public good, normally free to the user, to an environment in which higher education is seen as a privilege subject primarily to market forces? The Economics of Higher Education in the United States offers a desperately needed analysis in an attempt to understand and tackle this looming problem.
