This book was released on 2014-08-12 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural wetland ecosystems are the most productive ecosystems on the globe. In spite of their numerous benefits, currently, they are the most continuously threatened in many parts of the world. Thus, the world has yet to fully come to grasps with how to appreciate and conserve them. Hence, economic valuation of these wetlands is an obvious requirement for any inclusive practical policy design to mobilize stakeholders for its sustainable conservation and management. Thus, this book presents the economic valuation of conservational benefits of wetland ecosystem. In this book, conservational benefits, determinants of WTP and welfare implications of wetland are evaluated. The analysis should help any country who endowed by natural resources and beneficiaries of a given a natural wetland ecosystems plus who interest to grasp the concept economic valuation of a wetland and how to design hypothetical market scenario, and should be used for any policy makers and planners concerning decisions of improving conservation of wetland ecosystem, and should be especially useful for anyone else who may be face the paucity of literature in the area of environmental and natural resources economics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wetlands Conservation An up-to-date overview of approaches for addressing wetlands degradation and its effects on ecosystem services, human health, and other ecosystems Wetlands are essential sources of biodiversity, water purification, groundwater replenishment, flood control, storm protection, sediment retention, recreation and tourism, and more. Human exploitation of natural resources over the past 200 years has caused significant wetlands degradation and loss. Although the Ramsar Convention of 1971 drafted polices for wetland conservation and responsible use, many wetland sites remain inadequately conserved or managed. Maintaining the ecological balance and equilibrium of wetlands requires a clear understanding of the vital role of wetlands, the difficulties they face, and the policies enacted for their protection. Wetlands Conservation: Current Challenges and Future Strategies summarizes both current and emerging management strategies, trends, and policies regarding wetlands protection around the world. The authors provide accurate scientific information on wetlands while discussing the effects of climate change, global warming, modernization in agriculture, and other key topics. Designed to assist in the development of future solutions for wetlands conservation and management strategies, this important volume: Highlights the environmental, socioeconomic, and cultural importance of wetlands Identifies the factors responsible for the failure of many conservation initiatives Describes the natural and anthropogenic factors of wetlands degradation Discusses the role of community-based wetlands conservation and management Explores Ramsar wetlands conservation and its impacts worldwide Wetlands Conservation: Current Challenges and Future Strategies is an invaluable resource for graduate and postgraduate students, researchers, ecologists, policymakers, conservation organizations, and others working in the field of natural resources management.

Book Valuing Ecosystem Services

Download or read book Valuing Ecosystem Services written by Stavros Georgiou and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-04 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecosystem services can be broadly defined as the aspects of ecosystems that provide benefits to people. This book provides guidance on the valuation of ecosystem services, using the case of multifunctional wetlands to illustrate and make recommendations regarding the methods and techniques that can be applied to appraise management options. It provides a review of ecosystem service valuation rationale, including its importance from both a policy and project appraisal perspective, and a useful reference when considering policy and appraisal of ecosystem management options. It shows how legal obligations and other high-level management targets should be taken into account in valuation exercises, thus giving important policy context to the management options. The authors set out what they call an Ecosystem Services Approach to the full appraisal of the role of ecosystem services in the economy and society. Although concentrating on wetlands, the approaches suggested provide an assessment framework that can be applied to other types of ecosystem assets.

Book excerpt: Wetlands are among the most productive life-supporting systems of the world with immense socio-economic, ecological and bio-aesthetic importance. They are also one of the most threatened habitats in the world, facing degradation due to ill-planned urbanization, industrialization and encroachments. A wetland ecosystem provides innumerable tangible and intangible benefits to society, the value of which, due to being difficult to quantify and document, is often not disseminated to policymakers and the general public. Hence, economists have developed non-market approaches to address these difficult issues related to the valuation of the environment. This is to counter planning and development decisions made purely on economic grounds, on the basis of the forces at play in the free-market system. This book details the ecological importance, environmental degradation, threats, changes in land use and related key issues of Pallikaranai Marsh. It also provides an economic evaluation of the Marsh to guide policymakers and planners in decision-making processes at both the macro- and micro-level. Students, researchers and policymakers will benefit from this book in conducting wetland research, framing suitable management practices and valuating wetlands.

Download or read book Wetland Science written by B. Anjan Kumar Prusty and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to acknowledge the discipline ‘wetland science’ and to consolidate research findings, reviews and synthesis articles on different aspects of the wetlands in South Asia. The book presents 30 chapters by an international mix of experts in the field, who highlight and discuss diverse issues concerning wetlands in South Asia as case studies. The chapters are divided into different themes that represent broad issues of concern in a systematic manner keeping in mind students, researchers and general readers at large. The book introduces readers to the basics and theory of wetland science, supplemented by case studies and examples from the region. It also offers a valuable resource for graduate students and researchers in allied fields such as environmental studies, limnology, wildlife biology, aquatic biology, marine biology, and landscape ecology. To date the interdisciplinary field ‘wetland science’ is still rarely treated as a distinct discipline in its own right. Further, courses on wetland science aren’t taught at any of the world’s most prestigious universities; instead, the topics falling under this discipline are generally handled under the disciplines ‘ecology’ or under the extremely broad heading of ‘environmental studies’. It is high time that ‘Wetland Science’ be acknowledged as an interdisciplinary sub-discipline, which calls for an attempt to consolidate its various subtopics and present them comprehensively. Thus, this book also serves as a reference base on wetlands and facilitates further discussions on specific issues involved in safeguarding a sustainable future for the wetland habitats of this region.

Book Wetlands Market and Intervention Failures

Download or read book Wetlands Market and Intervention Failures written by Kerry Turner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wetlands are vital and valuable resources, both as rich and unique wildlife habitats, and for the functions they fulfil - providing flood and sediment control and coastal protection, as carbon sinks and pollution buffers, for their role in storing and recycling nutrients, as well as for their recreational value. Too often, however, their true value has been overlooked or underestimated and they have been mismanaged or destroyed as a result. This volume, commissioned by the OECD presents four case studies of the management policies of wetland environments in the UK, USA, France and Spain. They show how both markets and direct intervention have resulted in failure, severely reducing the amount of wetland and jeopardizing the remainder ,and they set out measures that will mitigate damage in the future .Turner and Jones have produced an essential work in the growing area of environmental economics. Book Social and Economic Benefits of Protected Areas

Download or read book Social and Economic Benefits of Protected Areas written by Marianne Kettunen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protected areas (PAs) contain biodiversity and ecosystems of high conservation value. In addition, these areas provide a range of benefits, both direct and indirect, to our societies and economies, i.e. so called ecosystem services. These services include, for example, an ecosystem's ability to regulate floods and climate, purify water, secure the pollination of crops, and create opportunities for recreation, culture and tourism. This book offers a comprehensive introduction to the socio-economic benefits of PAs and PA networks and provides step-by-step practical guidance on identifying, assessing and valuing the various ecosystem services and related benefits provided by PAs. It also aims to improve the communication of PA benefits to different stakeholders and the general public. It is shown that identifying and valuing the socio-economic benefits of PAs can be beneficial for several reasons. Demonstrating socio-economic importance of a protected site can significantly increase political and stakeholder support for the site and resolve conflicts between different interest groups. This can lead to positive changes in policies and decision-making. Insights on PA benefits are also needed to identify a combination of actions and land use practices that best support the sustainable and equitable utilisation of these benefits, while retaining a site’s conservation goals. Finally, demonstrating different benefits can help to discover alternative and sustainable sources for financing the management of PAs.
