Book Redeeming Economics

Download or read book Redeeming Economics written by John D. Mueller and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Groundbreaking.” —Washington Examiner Economics is primed for—and in desperate need of—a revolution, respected economic forecaster John D. Mueller shows in this eye-opening book. To make the leap forward will require looking backward, for as Redeeming Economics reveals, the most important element of economic theory has been ignored for more than two centuries. Since the great Adam Smith tore down this pillar of economic thought, economic theory has been unable to account for a fundamental aspect of human experience: the relationships that define us, the loves (and hates) that motivate and distinguish us as persons. In trying to reduce human behavior to exchanges, modern economists have forgotten how these essential motivations are expressed: as gifts (or their opposite, crimes). Mueller makes economics whole again, masterfully reapplying the economic thought of Aristotle, Augustine, and Aquinas.

Book Russia Resurrected

Download or read book Russia Resurrected written by Kathryn E. Stoner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An assessment of Russia that suggests that we should look beyond traditional means of power to understand its strength and capacity to disrupt international politics. Too often, we are told that Russia plays a weak hand well. But, perhaps the nation's cards are better than we know. Russia ranks significantly behind the US and China by traditional measures of power: GDP, population size and health, and military might. Yet 25 years removed from its mid-1990s nadir following the collapse of the USSR, Russia has become a supremely disruptive force in world politics. Kathryn E. Stoner assesses the resurrection of Russia and argues that we should look beyond traditional means of power to assess its strength in global affairs. Taking into account how Russian domestic politics under Vladimir Putin influence its foreign policy, Stoner explains how Russia has battled its way back to international prominence. From Russia's seizure of the Crimea from Ukraine to its military support for the Assad regime in Syria, the country has reasserted itself as a major global power. Stoner examines these developments and more in tackling the big questions about Russia's turnaround and global future. Stoner marshals data on Russia's political, economic, and social development and uncovers key insights from its domestic politics. Russian people are wealthier than the Chinese, debt is low, and fiscal policy is good despite sanctions and the volatile global economy. Vladimir Putin's autocratic regime faces virtually no organized domestic opposition. Yet, mindful of maintaining control at home, Russia under Putin also uses its varied power capacities to extend its influence abroad. While we often underestimate Russia's global influence, the consequences are evident in the disruption of politics in the US, Syria, and Venezuela, to name a few. Russia Resurrected is an eye-opening reassessment of the country, identifying the actual sources of its power in international politics and why it has been able to redefine the post-Cold War global order.

Book The Resurrection of America

Download or read book The Resurrection of America written by C. Warren Ellis and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Resurrection of America brings to the attention of Americans the many dangers facing our country from within. This book looks at the issues that exist today as a result of an out-of-control government, and it offers some proposed solutions. The author suggests changes at all levels of government and commerce based on our constitutional rights. The Resurrection of America looks at the policies and actions of the federal and state governments, the current economic disaster, the huge and ever-growing federal debt, and individual states that are struggling with financial challenges. Emphasis is placed on the rights of consumers in an increasingly corporate-dominated economy. The inspiration for this book came straight out of the Constitution of the United States. C. Warren Ellis was born in rural Pennsylvania, the second youngest in a family of seven children. After being honorably discharged from the Air Force before his 21st birthday, he held several jobs prior to returning to technical school to further his education in electronics. With over 50 years of both blue and white collar employment in such well known companies as IBM, he has observed first hand the effects of government on tax burdens, the economy, and unemployment. The realization that the United States is on a slippery slope away from the Constitution in terms of government and civil rights led to this book. One half of the author's proceeds from the sale of this book is pledged to the Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org). The attempts of industrialists to show the way towards its solution, in Britain and the Dominions, and in the United States, have been many and various. What is offered here is a statement of the Christian ideal – The Kingdom of God, a collection of representative Christian utterances on what its realization today would mean, and a selection of attempts which are being made or suggested to move towards its realization in practice.

Download or read book Resurrection Science written by M. R. O'Connor and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **A Library Journal Best Book of 2015 ** **A Christian Science Monitor Top Ten Book of September** In a world dominated by people and rapid climate change, species large and small are increasingly vulnerable to extinction. In Resurrection Science, journalist M. R. O'Connor explores the extreme measures scientists are taking to try and save them, from captive breeding and genetic management to de-extinction. Paradoxically, the more we intervene to save species, the less wild they often become. In stories of sixteenth-century galleon excavations, panther-tracking in Florida swamps, ancient African rainforests, Neanderthal tool-making, and cryogenic DNA banks, O'Connor investigates the philosophical questions of an age in which we "play god" with earth's biodiversity. Each chapter in this beautifully written book focuses on a unique species--from the charismatic northern white rhinoceros to the infamous passenger pigeon--and the people entwined in the animals' fates. Incorporating natural history and evolutionary biology with conversations with eminent ethicists, O'Connor's narrative goes to the heart of the human enterprise: What should we preserve of wilderness as we hurtle toward a future in which technology is present in nearly every aspect of our lives? How can we co-exist with species when our existence and their survival appear to be pitted against one another?

Book Architecture Space and Memory of Resurrection in Northern Ireland

Download or read book Architecture Space and Memory of Resurrection in Northern Ireland written by Mohamed Gamal Abdelmonem and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-25 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northern Ireland has a complex urbanism with multilayered socio-spatial politics. In this environment, issues of communication, self-representation and expression of identity are central to the experience of urban space and architecture where the dichotomy of division and shared living are spatially exercised in everyday life. Unlike other studies in the area, this book focuses on the everyday experiences of local communities in both public and private spheres - issues of ‘shareness’ - challenging conventional approaches to divided cities. The book aims to layer its narratives of architectural and social developments as an urban experience in post-conflict settings over the past two decades.

Book When Gambling for Resurrection is Too Risky

Download or read book When Gambling for Resurrection is Too Risky written by Divya Kirti and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than taking on more risk, US insurers hit hard by the crisis pulled back from risk taking, relative to insurers not hit as hard by the crisis. Capital requirements alone do not explain this risk reduction: insurers hit hard reduced risk within assets with identical regulatory treatment. State level US insurance regulation makes it unlikely this risk reduction was driven by moral suasion. Other financial institutions also reduce risk after large shocks: the same approach applied to banks yields similar results. My results suggest that, at least in some circumstances, franchise value can dominate, making gambling for resurrection too risky.
