Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa was the only developing region to accelerate its growth in the turbulent period of synchoronised slowdown and heightened uncertainty arising from the September 11 terrorist attacks. The growth reflected beter macroeconomic management, strong agricultural production, and the cessation of conflicts in several countries. Yet the growth of 4.3% masks sharp disparities and remains fragile. Increased rates of progress are necessary if the Millennium Development Goals are to be achieved. The medium-term outlook is cautiously optimistic. Positive developments include the launching of the Doha Development Round, with access to agricultural markets in rich countries firmly on the negotiating agenda. Enhanced market access initiatives in the US African Grown and Opportunity Act and the European Union's "Everything but arms" initiative are seen to have great potential. Ultimately, though, Africa's future depends on how it addresses economic and political governance, resolves conflicts, and responds to the need for reform.

Book Economic Report on Africa 2003

Download or read book Economic Report on Africa 2003 written by and published by United Nations Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth annual review of Africa's economic performance and near-term prospects, which seeks to build on the work of the three previous reports by laying out an agenda based on systematic benchmarking of economic performance. The report finds that economic growth in Africa slowed in 2002 to 3.2 per cent (from an average of 4.3 per cent per year previously), reflecting the slower than expected recovery in world trade, the effects of drought and AIDS in southern and eastern Africa, and the political and armed conflicts in several countries. Despite these problems, well-managed economies with solid reform agendas and good governance performed well, and this mixed performance highlights the importance of steady growth levels for effective poverty reduction and sustainable improvements in living standards. The report also contains seven in-depth country studies of Uganda, Rwanda, Mozambique, Ghana, Egypt, Gabon and Mauritius, which reveal a number of inter-country disparities in growth and development levels between urban and rural areas.

Published for the sixth consecutive year by OUP, the Report provides comprehensive analysis of the state of the African economy, examining development policy issues affecting the economic prospects of thecontinent. The Report's theme this year - Rural Development and Poverty Reduction in Africa - reflects the emerging consensus that poverty reduction in Africa should be placed at the heart of development processes and be guided by new strategies that address the causes of poverty directly and effectively. TheReport addresses a range of key issues relating to this theme, including:DT The status of rural poverty, which highlights the determinants, the incidence and the dynamics of both income and non-income poverty. DT Macroeconomic and structural policy mixes and the transmission mechanisms that create the right synergies for addressing all forms of poverty. DT The formulation of pro-poor macroeconomic policies and strategies relating to national budgets that favour human capital development namelyDT An integrated rural development approach which aims at reducing poverty by broadening the opportunities for employment and income generation in rural areas DT Role of ADB in fostering broad based economic growth and promoting an integrated rural development strategy. The African Development Bank is a multilateral development finance institution whose membership comprises all African countries and 25 from Asia, Europe, North and South America. As Africa's premier development finance institution, the ADB is uniquely placed to provide comprehensive analysis ofeconomic developments and policy concerns in the region. Book Economic Report on Africa 2011

Download or read book Economic Report on Africa 2011 written by United Nations and published by UN. This book was released on 2011 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many African economies are still characterized by a heavy reliance on the primary sector, high vulnerability to external shocks, jobless growth and slow progress towards social development. It is essential for African countries to promote economic diversification and structural transformation as a means to accelerate and sustain broad-based and shared high-employment-generating growth. This Report highlights that failure of earlier state-led and market-driven approaches to promoting economic transformation points to the need for fostering long-term investment, rapid and sustained economic growth, equity and social development within inclusive, transparent and comprehensive development frameworks.

Book Urbanization and Industrialization for Africa s Transformation

Download or read book Urbanization and Industrialization for Africa s Transformation written by United Nations. Economic Commission for Africa and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2017 Economic Report on Africa focuses on the linkages between industrialization and urbanization. Urbanization is one of Africa mega trends with profound implications for the social, economic, environmental dimensions of growth and transformation. Theory and experience demonstrate that industrialization and urbanization can be mutually reinforcing processes. It is therefore imperative to explore the linkages between urbanization and industrialization given the profound implications for structural transformation in Africa. So far, current policy narratives and frameworks on structural transformation and industrialization in Africa have largely failed to factor in the spatial and urban dimensions of industrialization, and in particular the advantages presented by productivity enhancement and agglomeration effects generated by cities. Yet, the nexus between urbanization and industrialization is of particular relevance for Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development. Both agendas recognize urbanization as a critical factor for sustainable development. It is also important to consider urbanization and industrialization in light of Africa's engagement with the Third United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) to be held in Quito, Ecuador in October 2016. In this context, African policy makers have clearly recognized urbanization as an engine of structural transformation for inclusive and sustainable growth.

Book Africa s Infrastructure

Download or read book Africa s Infrastructure written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable infrastructure development is vital for Africa s prosperity. And now is the time to begin the transformation. This volume is the culmination of an unprecedented effort to document, analyze, and interpret the full extent of the challenge in developing Sub-Saharan Africa s infrastructure sectors. As a result, it represents the most comprehensive reference currently available on infrastructure in the region. The book covers the five main economic infrastructure sectors information and communication technology, irrigation, power, transport, and water and sanitation. 'Africa s Infrastructure: A Time for Transformation' reflects the collaboration of a wide array of African regional institutions and development partners under the auspices of the Infrastructure Consortium for Africa. It presents the findings of the Africa Infrastructure Country Diagnostic (AICD), a project launched following a commitment in 2005 by the international community (after the G8 summit at Gleneagles, Scotland) to scale up financial support for infrastructure development in Africa. The lack of reliable information in this area made it difficult to evaluate the success of past interventions, prioritize current allocations, and provide benchmarks for measuring future progress, hence the need for the AICD. Africa s infrastructure sectors lag well behind those of the rest of the world, and the gap is widening. Some of the main policy-relevant findings highlighted in the book include the following: infrastructure in the region is exceptionally expensive, with tariffs being many times higher than those found elsewhere. Inadequate and expensive infrastructure is retarding growth by 2 percentage points each year. Solving the problem will cost over US$90 billion per year, which is more than twice what is being spent in Africa today. However, money alone is not the answer. Prudent policies, wise management, and sound maintenance can improve efficiency, thereby stretching the infrastructure dollar. There is the potential to recover an additional US$17 billion a year from within the existing infrastructure resource envelope simply by improving efficiency. For example, improved revenue collection and utility management could generate US$3.3 billion per year. Regional power trade could reduce annual costs by US$2 billion. And deregulating the trucking industry could reduce freight costs by one-half. So, raising more funds without also tackling inefficiencies would be like pouring water into a leaking bucket. Finally, the power sector and fragile states represent particular challenges. Even if every efficiency in every infrastructure sector could be captured, a substantial funding gap of $31 billion a year would remain. Nevertheless, the African people and economies cannot wait any longer. Now is the time to begin the transformation to sustainable development.

Download or read book Learning from SARS written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-04-26 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in late 2002 and 2003 challenged the global public health community to confront a novel epidemic that spread rapidly from its origins in southern China until it had reached more than 25 other countries within a matter of months. In addition to the number of patients infected with the SARS virus, the disease had profound economic and political repercussions in many of the affected regions. Recent reports of isolated new SARS cases and a fear that the disease could reemerge and spread have put public health officials on high alert for any indications of possible new outbreaks. This report examines the response to SARS by public health systems in individual countries, the biology of the SARS coronavirus and related coronaviruses in animals, the economic and political fallout of the SARS epidemic, quarantine law and other public health measures that apply to combating infectious diseases, and the role of international organizations and scientific cooperation in halting the spread of SARS. The report provides an illuminating survey of findings from the epidemic, along with an assessment of what might be needed in order to contain any future outbreaks of SARS or other emerging infections.
