Book The Restructuring of Romania s Economy

Download or read book The Restructuring of Romania s Economy written by Raphael Shen and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1997-11-20 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the political, financial, social, and economic conditions inherited from Communist rule, Romania's new government concluded that a shock therapy approach to reform would create unmanageable chaos and enduring instability. Though committed to economic liberalization, decisionmakers espoused a gradualist approach to economic reform. The government pursued its objectives by implementing policies it considered functionally operational. Although Romania experienced the macro dislocations and downturns that are common in transitional economies in the region, the country sustained shallower recessions, lower inflationary spirals, and shorter production losses than many reforming economies. This study analyzes how, against calculated probabilities and within a relatively short time period, Romania has stabilized and assembled all the basic ingredients for a successful transformation from a centralized system to a market-driven economy. The lessons derivable from Romania's relatively successful experiment with systemic transformation could be beneficial to reform architects in all newly liberalized economies in Eastern Europe. The conclusions of this study reinforce the view that it is imperative to examine and foster the existing preconditions, including political, institutional, and financial components, before subjecting an economy to extensive and intensive shocks that could be judiciously mitigated or circumvented. Unlike other newly liberalized economies in Eastern Europe, where the once disgraced Communists have returned to power, sympathy for a centralized system has been steadily and swiftly declining in Romania. The primary factor in Romania's success, the author claims, is its circumspect approach to reform.

Book The East European Economies in the 1970s

Download or read book The East European Economies in the 1970s written by Alec Nove and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The East European Economies in the 1970s reviews the development of economic policy in Eastern Europe in the 1970s. This book includes individual country studies that compare and contrast both the aims of economic development and the results of the growth process, as well as the instruments employed in economic policy. More specifically, this book examines what has happened during the past decade after the fundamental changes in economic policy that occurred in the 1960s. This text is comprised of 10 chapters; the first of which provides a background on economic reform in Eastern Europe during the 1970s. Attention then turns to the economic policy, methods, and performance of the USSR after 1970. The chapters that follow focus on the German Democratic Republic, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, and Yugoslavia. This book concludes with a discussion on the economic system of Albania in the 1970s, focusing on the country's conservative radicalism, agriculture, and sharp disputes on economic policy between 1974 and 1976. Throughout the book, the emphasis is on how the ""process of reconstruction within the system"" has led to increasing differentiation of aims, institutions, and instruments of economic policy between individual countries. This book will be of interest to political science students, political scientists, political economists, and policy analysts.

Book The Political Economy of Middle Class Politics and the Global Crisis in Eastern Europe

Download or read book The Political Economy of Middle Class Politics and the Global Crisis in Eastern Europe written by Agnes Gagyi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-09 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to dominant narratives which portray East European politics as a pendulum swing between democracy and authoritarianism, conventionally defined in terms of an ahistorical cultural geography of East vs. West, this book analyzes post-socialist transformation as part of the long downturn of the post-WWII global capitalist cycle. Based on an empirical comparison of two countries with significantly different political regimes throughout the period, Hungary and Romania, this study shows how different constellations of successive late socialist and post-socialist regimes have managed internal and external class relations throughout the same global crisis process, from very similar positions of semi-peripheral, post-socialist systemic integration. Within this context, the book follows the role of social movements since the 1970s, paying attention both to the level of differences between local integration regimes and to the level of structural similarities of global integration. The analysis maintains a special focus on movements’ class composition and inter-class relationships and the specific position of middle-class politics in movements.

Book Reforming the International Financial System for Development

Download or read book Reforming the International Financial System for Development written by Jomo Kwame Sundaram and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-17 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1944 Bretton Woods conference created new institutions for international economic governance. Though flawed, the system led to a golden age in postwar reconstruction, sustained economic growth, job creation, and postcolonial development. Yet financial liberalization since the 1970s has involved deregulation and globalization, which have exacerbated instability, rather than sustained growth. In addition, the failure of Bretton Woods to provide a reserve currency enabled the dollar to fill the void, which has contributed to periodic, massive U.S. trade deficits. Our latest global financial crisis, in which all these weaknesses played a part, underscores how urgently we must reform the international financial system. Prepared for the G24 research program, a consortium of developing countries focused on financial issues, this volume argues that such reforms must be developmental. Chapters review historical trends in global liquidity, financial flows to emerging markets, and the food crisis, identifying the systemic flaws that contributed to the recent downturn. They challenge the effectiveness of recent policy and suggest criteria for regulatory reform, keeping in mind the different circumstances, capacities, and capabilities of various economies. Essays follow ongoing revisions in international banking standards, the improved management of international capital flows, the critical role of the World Trade Organization in liberalizing and globalizing financial services, and the need for international tax cooperation. They also propose new global banking and reserve currency arrangements.
