Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Negro Farmer It is often taken for granted that the Negro has practically equal Opportunities in the various parts of the South, and that a fairly uniform rate of progress may be expected. This as sumption rests on an ignorance of the geographical location of the mass of blacks. It will be shown that they are living in several distinct agricultural zones in which success must be sought according to local possibilities. Development always de pends upon the environment, and we should expect, therefore, unequal progress for the Negroes. Even the highest fruits of civilization fail if the bases of life are suddenly changed. The Congregational Church has not flourished among the Negroes as have some other denominations, in spite of its great activity in educational work. The American mode of government is be ing greatly modified to make it fit conditions in Porto Rico. The manufacturers of Pennsylvania and the farmers of Iowa do not agree as to the articles on which duties should be levied, and it is a question if the two have the same interpretation of the principle of protection. Different environments produce differ ent types. So it will be in the case of the Negro. If we are to understand the conditions on which his progress depends, we must pay some attention to economic geography. That this will result in a recognition of the need for shaping plans and methods according to local needs is obvious. The present thesis does not pretend to be a completed study, much less an attempt to solve the Negro problem. It is written in the hope of calling attention to some of the results of this geographic location as illustrated in the situation of the Negro farmer in various parts of the South. The principal objective of this book is to utilize historical and empirical data to substantiate that the use of coercion by the state apparatus has not only impeded the individual rights of African Americans, but it has also decimated them economically.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Redistribution of the American Negro South remained in 1860 almost entirely dependent upon agriculture, and held only 30% of the white population of the United States, but almost 95% of the black. The blacks then constituted more than one-third of its total population, the numbers stated in thousands being 000 whites and blacks. In 1920 the numbers were whites and blacks, the blacks consti tuting less than one-fourth of the total. Of the three divisions into which the black majority counties fell on my map, the Texas Black Belt was never of importance except as separating two of the white majority regions. It comprised only fifteen counties irregularly grouped in the vicinity of the City of Houston. The census of 1890 showed the white rate of increase to be the greater, and in the next decade this ran up to 43% against a black rate of 16. The census of 1910 showed a white gain of only but there was a black loss of seven counties had lost their black majorities, and in the district there were whites to blacks, the black percentage fall ing in twenty years from 61 to 52. The persistence of this trend down to 1920, which may be confidently assumed, though as yet we have only the State rates of increase'f 22% for the whites and 7% for the blacks - will have caus ed the complete disappearance of the division as such. The extent and nature of the sys tem varied with different regions but the demand for slaves was active and the native economy and social order were kept more or less chronically deranged by the trading in captives and the raid ing expeditions incident thereto. From the eighth century, the Arabs, incident to their trade relations with Africa, engaged in the capture, purchase, and distribution Of African Slaves. In the latter half Of the fifteenth century the Spanish and Portuguese merchants developed an active trade in African Slaves. The first Shipload, 225 Negroes captured on the African West Coast, was taken to Portugal in 1444. There proved to be a demand for them as domestic servants in the towns and as laborers on the estates from which the Moors had been recently expelled. Others were sold into Spain where they were similarly employed. The Spanish merchants also engaged in the traffic and at the time Of the discovery Of America there was a considerable Negro population in the peninsula and the system Of Negro Slavery was well established in both Spain and Portugal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aftermath of Slavery: A Study of the Condition and Environment, of the American Negro William A. Sinclair, the author of this book, was born in slavery at Georgetown, South Carolina. When about four years of age, in the early part of the Civil War, he was sold with his mother, from his home; but about a year after the close of the war, after many trying experiences, they returned to his native place, where a partial reuniting of the family was effected. William's father died shortly after this, and the widowed mother became responsible for the boy's maintenance and education. He attended the local schools and prepared himself to enter upon a higher course of study at Claflin University, Orangeburg, South Carolina. Thence he went to the well-known South Carolina College at Columbia, that venerable institution of learning, which, in the days of slavery, had been patronized by the aristocracy of the state including Haynes, Rhett, McDuffee, Barnwell, and Calhoun, and which, under Republican administration of the state after the close of the war, had been thrown open to colored as well as white students. Colored students were debarred from this college in 1877, and Mr. Sinclair entered Howard University, Washington, D. C., where he graduated from the college and theological departments and where he later received the degree of Master of Arts. The next step in his educational development was post-graduate study at Andover Theological Seminary, where he won a prize for a dissertation and delivered an address at the commencement exercises. For six years he devoted himself to missionary work, under the auspices of the American Missionary Association, at Nashville, Tennessee, and here he improved the opportunity to study medicine at the MeHarry Medical College of Central Tennessee University (now Walden University of Nashville), where he took his medical degree, being also the salutatorian of his class.
